Show: after an amazingly successful Show last year, the Canowindra Pastoral, Agricultural and Horticultural Association invites you to join the committee. Its going to be a big task to improve on the last Show, so every suggestion and idea is welcomed. The first meeting for 2012 will be held 7:30pm at the Canowindra Bowling Club. Hope to see you there. Found: If anyone in Canowindra missing a Jack Russell dog, one turned up at a reader's home a few days ago and won't leave. Its a male dog, brown and white & very friendly... let me know if you or anyone you know is missing a dog so he can be returned. Scholarship: applications for the AGFW Central West branch Lock: remember to secure your vehicles when left unattended. There has been an increase in theft from motor vehicles where personal belongings have been taken. Please do not become complacent, these offences can take place anywhere at anytime. Please report all suspicious behaviour to police via the Police Assistance Line on 131 444. Bouquet: to Nick Jacobs from Canowindra Trading Post. During the heavy rain on Sunday afternoon, four of his customers were stranded with their car parked across the other side of the road. Not only did Nick drive their car across for them, he ushered each one of the ladies to the car under a struggling umbrella, getting drenched himself in the process. Now THAT is customer service! Balloons: Canowindra Challenge Inc will be holding a public meeting Monday 30 January 6:30pm at Old Vic for anyone interested in volunteering to help at this years event. There are a variety of roles for all ages and levels of fitness. If any community group are interested in holding an ancillary event such as tractor pull, team penning, etc please come along so that a program can be compiled. The event will be held 14-21 April 2012, with Easter the weekend before 6-9 April. Luna: new year, or Chinese New Year falls on Monday 23 January, this year being the Year of the Dragon, a symbol happiness and success. So why not celebrate with Kelly & Ming at the Canowindra Golf Club (try the steamed dim sims...theyre awesome), or Angie & Robert at the Canowindra Bowling Club (their spring rolls are divine) and wish them a prosperous new year. Xin nian kuai le (sing nee-an kway ler).

BALLOON CHALLENGE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Initially formed in 2010 to organise and run the 17th Australian National Ballooning Championship, Canowindra Challenge Inc is a community based organisation dedicated to improving the social and business amenity in the village of Canowindra. The 2011 Championship was a such a successful ballooning competition, attracting over 11,000 visitors, that CCI decided to utilise the skills and structure developed to run an annual ballooning event. This annual event has the sanction of the Australian Ballooning Federation and therefore the creditability to provide a much needed international standard competition to assist Australia's top pilots to hone their skills and newer pilots to learn from their more experienced counterparts. A new committee was elected in July 2011 and planning is now well underway for the 2012 "Canowindra Balloon Challenge" to be held during the school holidays, between 14 to 21 April 2012. This will be CCIs third full scale event and our biggest so far. The daily mass takeoffs of over 30 balloons in the early morning light is a spectacle enjoyed by all. This year the latest flight news will be announced on 1300 908 825 (Option 4) each morning and afternoon immediately the decision is made, The largest spectator drawcards are the family evening that consists of a combined wine and food market, a Balloon Glow and a night rugby match on the first night. This has been the highlight of previous events and in 2011 we attracted an estimated 5,500 visitors on this night alone. In 2012 we plan to run another major spectator event known as a Key Grab. This task tests the skill of the balloonists as they fly up to 10kms into the village Sports Ground and endeavour to grab a key or an envelope from the top of a flexible pole. The key represents the key to a valuable prize, this is an extremely difficult but not impossible task hence has very high spectator and media appeal assuring local and national TV coverage. Volunteers to help in all aspects of the event are required for a vast range of roles, from helping at the Balloon Glow, event management and coordination, to trainee wind readers who wouldnt mind getting up at 3am to gauge conditions for the pilots. To express your interest in helping out, a meeting is being held 6:30pm Monday 30 January at The Old Vic Inn, or call Jan Kerr on 02 6344 1819.

DONT WASTE IT: CREATE IT Its well accepted that one mans trash is another mans treasure, but how many people would consider things they regularly throw into the rubbish bin could be art. The annual Waste to Art competition challenges that thinking and the competition is open again this year to give Cabonne residents the opportunity to showcase their artistic ability. Celebrating the re-use and recycling of waste materials, the competition challenges people to use their imagination to turn their trash into art and craft treasures. Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said the competition offers cash prizes in five categories and he urged local residents to enter. The competition caters for everyone, not only established and aspiring artists, and is a fun way of spreading a serious message, he said. You can create a new life for bottle tops, plastic bags, paper and cardboard, aluminium cans, rusty bits of machinery and just about anything that would end up in landfill. As well as cash prizes for the most inspiring artwork in each category, there will be an overall winner and a peoples choice award. The best entries will be included in a regional exhibition and competition to be in June. The five categories are primary school, high school, community, building/ sculpture and open. Professional artists are eligible to enter the open category. Entry forms can be obtained from Cabonne Councils offices or from the Featured Programs and Environment sections of Councils website www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au. Entries must be submitted to Cabonne Council by 5pm on Thursday 5 April 2012. For further information, please contact Council on 6392 3200.
