A few years ago during a strategy
meeting on how can Golling Buick
GMC better serve the surrounding
communities it was decided that a
Quality Oil change center was the
answer. Since we were getting ready
to undergo a massive face lift of the
showroom and service aisle, this was
the time to add such a center to our
facility. In March 2011 we opened the
Tire and Lube Center.

sized child care center that bases our beliefs
on the fact that every child is unique in their
learning ability and style. Therefore we base

When your potential customers include
pretty much everyone, you need to know your
business, says Josh Kreger, vice president
and general manager for Mattress King Sleep
Centers, with seven Michigan locations. Af-
ter all, everybody sleeps, and correspondingly,
everyone can benefit from a great mattress.
We are a very friendly, customer-service
oriented business that focuses on getting our
customers the very best nights sleep, Kreger
says. The business has been family owned
and operated throughout its 30-year history
and offers mattresses by Serta (which are
made in Michigan), Simmons and Tempur-
pedic, along with metal and wood beds and
headboards.
Our business is sleep, and while there
have been changes in mattresses with the
growth and popularity of specialty sleep prod-
ucts like Tempur-pedic, the main things stay
the same and that is listening to our custom-
ers needs and fitting them into a mattress
that will allow them a great nights sleep for
years to come, Kreger says. According to
Kreger, Mattress King has been in business
for three decades because every customer
who comes in the store can count on en-
countering these three important things: Ex-
pertise. Sales staff members are focused on
fitting the customer into the right bed rather
than just making a sale and moving on to the
next person, Kreger says. The personalized
service we offer gets people sleeping better,
and thus makes them more productive at their
jobs and in their daily lives, he adds. Some-
thing for every budget. With three decades in
business, Mattress King has built relationships
with mattress vendors that allow the sleep
shops to offer unique products and prices
that other places cant match.
We offer all price ranges in mattresses,
and people can be confident they wont get a
better deal elsewhere while getting the best
expertise in sleep, Kreger says. We focus
on the customer and their needs, and offer
products that can fit anyones budget.
Low-pressure atmosphere. No one likes
being followed around by a high-pressure
sales person and at Mattress King, you can
rest assured that will never happen. Cus-
tomers are encouraged to relax, lie down, and
try out products to find the best fit, Kreger
says. Top Traits With a total staff of 22, Mat-
tress King expects to do limited hiring of sales
staff in the upcoming months, according to
Kreger. When hiring, the company looks for
those who can listen, learn and smile. When
we hire sales personnel, we look for some
key things. Foremost is the ability to listen
first and talk second, Kreger says. Also,
we look for people who are open-minded and
willing to learn. They should have the dispo-
sition to offer great customer service with a
smile.
Key to longevity rests on great service
This is the third year that my staff and
I have been recognized as best dentist. We

Lake Orion Board of Education and is very active
in our local schools. In the past Steven has served
as Vice President and Trustee of the Oxford
Board of Education. He has also served as
President of the Orion/Oxford Boys and Girls
Club, and has served as legal counsel for
numerous local non-profit organizations such
as the Lake Orion War Memorial and Lake Orion
Steven Drakos earns Best of the Best
Lions Club.
Mr. Drakos has been invited by the Dean of
Thomas M. Cooley Law School to teach on the
importance of ethics and professionalism in the
practice of law. He will start classes in January of
2012. He has been recognized for his leadership
in this area of the law and has been asked to
serve the law school in this regard.
As an attorney he takes pride in assisting his

Deck, there have been numerous changes
in the eye care field since he began
practicing fifteen years ago. The
changes in medications to treat eye
infections and allergies, and the new
glaucoma therapies have improved
dramatically. Surgeons like Dr. Greenley
have been improving refractive surgeries
to include custom LASIK with intra-lase,
epi-LASIK, and LASEK. The new
spectacle lens designs have made the
lenses more distortion free and now we
have customized progressive lenses for
bifocal wearers, says Deck. However,
the most exciting advancements in eye
care are new instrumentation that allows
practitioners to diagnose, treat and predict
outcomes more accurately now than in
the past.
The office has over 750 unique frame
and sunglasses on display, and can special
order most others if they are not in stock.
The practice is kid friendly, seeing children
of all ages. We provide a relaxed
atmosphere for children, since coming to
the eye doctor can be intimidating, states
Deck. Children coming in for the first time
can have a picture taken with some of our
equipment and e-mailed home to parents.

Optimism for community
Maybe we -- as a community -- hit bot-
tom in 2010, and by 2011 folks realized
they could whine in vain, or they could pull
up their big-boy pants and start to make
things happen for themselves. Maybe.
Maybe not.
Quite possibly we are buying our own,
self-proclaimed mission, to lead, inspire
and inform and our own company goal,
to be relevant.
We dont know why, or how, but the
feeling we feel as 2011 moves to 2012 is
one of growing optimism. We are not be-
ing delusional either, local businessmen and
women, as well as folks on the streets tell
us things are not as good as they once were,
but they arent as bad as they were, either.
For us at the newspaper 2011 was a good
year, so much so that we are looking for-
ward to 2012.
In 2012 we will continue to grow both
print and electronic versions of The Lake
Orion Review and improve local program-
ming for our on-line tv station
(www.LakeOr ionTV.com).
More than ever, it is time for us to keep
our white hat handy, to ride at the forefront
touting what our community has to offer.
We will do this editorially with news con-
tent, commentary and opinion pieces. We
will beat the drums and circle the wagons
with this message, This is our community
and we (local business, residents, service
groups and even government units) need
to support one another.
Of course, as a newspaper, we will cheer
the good as well as out the bad.
In 2012 we will continue to bring read-
ers a number of timely, full color special
sections, as well as occasional issues of
The Review itself.
For local businesspeople, we will con-
tinue to offer you the most effective and
trusted way to reach our community. Suc-
cess is not by accident. And, just as it is
with success, for marketing to work, it
must be planned and targeted.
To our business partners, ask your ad-
vertising representative to work harder for
you. Ask them to work out a plan and bud-
get for 2012. Also make sure they invite
you to our nationally recognized and
award-winning Coffee Clubs (what assis-
tant publisher Don Rush lovingly calls,

The Lake Orion is a paid-circulation,
weekly community newspaper. Its fam-
ily-owned, employing up to 60 people (de-
pending on the season), who love to shop
locally. The Review is a mainstay in the
community, on top of local news since
December, 1881. It has been at its current
location, 30 N. Broadway Street in down-
town, since 1905.
The Reviews sister publications are The
Oxford Leader, Ad-Vertiser, Clarkston
News, Penny Stretcher and The Big Deal.
A viable business, Sherman Publications,
Inc. (publishers of the newspapers) and
staff continually look for new ways to
grow. In 1961, The Ad-Vertiser, a free, to-
tal market shopper, was started to comple-
ment the paid circulation newspaper and
empower local businesses by giving them
a reach, before unheard of.
In 2002, Sherman Publications made the
leap to cyberspace, putting news, advertis-
ing and want ads on-line at

While not everything we run in our print
editions is on-line, the website still has a lot
