This means when your computer starts it scans your CD-ROM/DVD player for a startable disc. If your computer does not start from CD ROM you will need to goto into your BIOS by holding the key DEL, F10 or F2 when your computer starts. There are different key (combinations) to get access to the BIOS, it varies per brand of mainboard/computer. Consult your computer manual for details. When you start from CD ROM you will see a menu where you are asked if you want to start from CD ROM or harddisk, choose CD ROM here. The next menu will ask you if you want to boot "With default values" or "your own values". Using the default option is normally sufficient to boot your system. When your system boots succesfully you will get that you can navigate and you can start several applications. There is an extensive help system for objects found on the desktop. You can press functionkey to open the help for the object you selected. * Limitations boot demo eComStation CD-ROM You can boot this demo CD inside a virtual machine, we advise you to use Connectix/Microsoft Virtual PC. But the boot success may vary from version to version of Virtual PC. Choose the IBM IDE driver in the preboot menu if you do not have succes booting. a Desktop eComStation available the F1 currently

The eComStation demo CD will not work in VMware! ** Limitations boot demo eComStation CD-ROM ** Since this version of eComStation completely runs from CD there are some limitations that are not present in the regular version of eCS. You will need at least 160 MB of RAM (the normal eCS version will work on a system with 64 MB of RAM). A Pentium II CPU or higher is strongly recommended. 1) This demo version provides very limited access to your harddrive. In this way it cannot cause any harm to your normal system! 2) This demonstration version does not support printing. 3) The demo version may simply crash, if it runs out of memory. (Kernel dump) This is because the RAM memory is exhausted! The regular version of eComStation can use the harddisk for virtual memory and will of course not exhibit this behaviour. 4) If your network card (NIC) is supported by this demo CD it will be automatically detected and configured for TCPIP access. Please use the Internet Configuration from the Internet folder to activate the TCPIP connection. If you do not have a network card, or if it is not detected, you can alternatively use an external serial modem to dialin to the Internet. Configure this with the dialer object in the Internet folder on the desktop. The regular version of eComStation can connect to the Internet over all sorts of connections, including ISDN, PPPoE, PPtP, xDSL etc. Please note that so called WinModems are not supported. ** The resolution with which the demo CD boots. ** By default the demo CD boots with a resolution of 1024 x 768. If you get a distorted image on your system you can go into the preboot menu and change the setting to 800 x 600. See the "Frequently asked questions" Q3 how to get into the preboot menu. The resolution option is on the second page. ** Frequently asked questions ** Q1) I tried the demo CD of eComStation and I like it! Where is the source code ? A1) The source code for OS/2 (on which eComStation is based) can not be downloaded. OS/2 is not open source. The components that are opensource like Firefox can be downloaded from the developer(s) webpage. Q2) I like the demo CD where can I purchase eComStation ? A2) Goto http://www.ecomstation.com/where_purchase.phtml to find a reseller close to you.

Q3) My system did not boot, what can I do ? A3) Well there can be a lot of reasons a boot can go wrong. Make certain you burned the CD speed at the lowest possible speed, to prevent read-errors. Also, you can go into the advanced preboot menu(*) and (de)select the following items: A) Choose the IBM IDE driver (third page of menu). B) Do not load a networkcard driver. Set it to "NULL MAC driver" (last page of the preboot menu). C) Disable the loading of the USB drivers (fourth page). D) On the second page remove the checkmark to load the UNIAUD driver. (*) When you choose to boot from CD (with the first menu option) you get a second menu where you can choose to "boot with your values). With this option you can get in the pre-boot menu. ** Warning about changing preboot menu setting ** PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING ON THE SETTING IN THE BOOT OPTIONS MENU We have tested the full version of eComStation and the eComStation demonstration CD on many, many systems. On the page "Storage" of the preboot menu either the field(s) "controller 1.", "controller 2." and "controller 3" the IDE controller is set by default to "Compatibility mode". If your system does not boot from the CD you can switch the controller to "performance mode" for the IDE controller. To prevent dataloss, you need to power off your system after you have used the demonstration CD in this mode. Explanation: When a computer restarts (reboots) the BIOS should reset the IDE controller (that controls your hard disks). The two machines on which we have observed the data loss did not do this. If you switch to performance mode the IDE controller is reprogrammed by our driver. If you use the performance mode of one of the two IDE drives we recommend that you shutdown your system (turn of the power) after using the demo CD. Do not let another operating system start if you have not powered of your system yet! Turning your system on and off will reset the IDE controller properly. On a side note; the chance you will encounter this kind of data corruption is VERY small. It seems to happen with a few systems with an incorrectly written BIOS.
