The Renaissance and the Reformation

Group Project
Objectives:
 To learn the historical and social background of the time of the Renaissance
 To discover the trends in literature and art for each period and make
generalizations about how the social and historical events affected those trends.
 To read and analyze a representative piece of literature

Products:
 A 10-15 minute presentation to the class on the reigning Monarch, the major
historical events, social developments, and major artists of the time period
 A display of art and literature from the period
 A handout summarizing the essential information for the class. This includes a
copy of your pieces of literature and your analysis of them.

Each group will be assigned two Monarchs.

Your presentation on the Monarch should include:
 Important details of that Monarch’s reign
 Biographical information on the Monarch (an overview of interesting and
essential facts, not a lengthy biography!))
 Other key figures of the time -- who they were & what they did
 Social and technological developments during that reign
 Literary and artistic movements during that period, especially anything
exclusive to that time, key figures in the Arts, and images of representative
works of art

Your group will read a piece of literature (most probably a poem) written during the
reign of each of your Monarchs.
 For each piece of literature, you will present a summary and mini analysis to
the class.
 The literature you select should NOT be one from our textbook.

Format:
Your presentations can be in any format, from PowerPoint or multimedia
presentations, to video or live dramatizations, to posters or other types of displays, or
a combination of formats.

Task Responsibility:
Every person in the group must have an assigned role for searching and preparing
information:
Who’s Who Biographer Chronicler
Technologist Social Butterfly
(In cases of 3-member groups, the technology and social roles are combined)

The task of summarizing and analyzing the pieces of literature will be shared by all
group members.
