Introduction
What is TEMS Pocket?

TEMS Pocket is a handheld tool for verification, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mobile networks as well as for basic cell planning tasks. Built into a commercial mobile phone, TEMS Pocket collects measurements and events and presents them on the device display. The measurements may be stored for later analysis in other products such as TEMS Discovery and TEMS Investigation. The combination of small size and powerful testing features makes TEMS Pocket a convenient tool for day-to-day monitoring of mobile networks. In addition, since the mobile station can function as the user's regular phone, TEMS Pocket provides a powerful way to find errors without explicitly searching for them. TEMS Pocket is designed as an integral part of the phones user interface. This promotes continuous use by engineers and technicians, which translates into more time for them to detect, document, and solve problems. TEMS Pocket can be integrated with other products in the Ascom Network Testing portfolio to form a complete network monitoring solution that allows reuse of information collected throughout an organization. TEMS Pocket provides its users with a solution that is efficient and offers good value.

Indoor Map View

The Indoor Map View allows the user to view selected Information Elements and cell sites. This feature allows the user to take a photograph of a floor plan with the phone and immediately use that floor plan as measurements are collected. The Indoor Map is available during recording (when using a data script) and during replay for voice and data.

2.3

SMS and WAP Testing

SMS and WAP testing functionality has been added to TEMS Pocket 8.1. To test SMS, the device sends an SMS message to itself, and then both the send time and the receive time are provided in the test results. To test WAP, a WAP page is downloaded, and then parameters including download time and number of items on the page are provided in the test results.

2.4

Support for TEMS Investigation

An optional software and license option enables the HTC Touch Pro2 device used for TEMS Pocket 8.1 to be used with TEMS Investigation to collect data.

2.5

Settings Transfer

Settings from one TEMS Pocket 8.1 device can be easily copied to another TEMS Pocket 8.1 device.

4.6

Events

TEMS Pocket 8.1 can log a wide range of network events. For the full list of supported events, see Appendix B.

Sample Event list

4.7

GPS Support

TEMS Pocket 8.1 supports positioning with the GPS device built into the handset. An included option makes it possible to connect an external Bluetooth GPS, either one provided by Ascom or a commercially available model. Supported Bluetooth GPS devices are those using Bluetooth version 1.1 (or later) and NMEA 0183 version 2.2 (or later). Bluetooth pairing is handled by the regular Bluetooth functions in the phone. Tagging TEMS Pocket logfiles with position information means that the logfiles are available for comprehensive analysis with mapping tools such as those found in TEMS Discovery and TEMS Investigation. TEMS Pocket GPS usage is configured in the settings submenu.

4.8

Logfile Recording

TEMS Pocket can record its measurements in logfiles that contain the same richness of detail as logfiles recorded with TEMS Automatic test units or with terminals connected to TEMS Investigation. The only TEMS data that cannot be obtained with TEMS Pocket is data that requires additional hardware not available with TEMS Pocket, such as an external scanner or DSP. TEMS Pocket logfiles are stored on the MicroSD card that is provided with the product. This card can accommodate several weeks of continuous logging. Every TEMS Pocket user is thus in a position to capture valuable data whenever the opportunity arises, using his or her regular handset. This

Ascom (2010)

12(16)

greatly enhances the flexibility and efficiency of network monitoring, and also promotes multiple uses of the same data. The logfile settings are available from the TEMS Pocket menu.

4.9

Logfile Upload

Logfiles are ordinary files in the phone file system and can be handled by the user via the file manager. For example, the user can transfer logfiles to a PC via USB or Bluetooth. It is also possible to send files as attachments to email. Recorded logfiles can be sent to an FTP server using the built-in FTP client. This can be used to report the work progress with reports sent directly from the field. It can also be used to fully integrate the collected data into TEMS Automatic. TEMS Pocket can be configured to upload logfiles to an FTP server automatically as soon as the recording is concluded. Logfiles are compressed before they are transferred over the air in order to reduce upload time and to save battery power.

4.10

Logfile Replay

From the Logfile menu the user can replay previously recorded logfiles for quick and easy on-site troubleshooting. All data and events will then display in the TEMS Pocket user interface exactly as they did in real time. An icon indicates that replay is in progress.

4.11

Scripts

TEMS Pocket supports automation of testing with simple command sequences called scripts. The type of service to be tested and the needed parameters for the service are defined in the script. Services that can be included in a script are: Speech (Voice) HTTP Ping FTP WAP SMS

The user can start and stop the script from the Scripts submenu. Scripts provide a powerful aid in troubleshooting by allowing engineers to run tests at a moments notice. Furthermore, in conjunction with automated logfile recording and FTP transfer, the scripts facility allows TEMS Pocket units to be used as handheld testing probes for TEMS Automatic.
