Koreatown Northgate Telegraph Avenue Utility Boxes Community Public Art Project Call to Artists
The KONO (Koreatown Northgate) Community Benefit District would like to invite Oakland artists to submit their ideas and portfolios in order to be a part of a community art project. There are 12 utility boxes in the KONO district (Telegraph Avenue between 20th and 35th streets) that need to be adorned with visual creativity. Selected artists will be given $500.00 per utility box* plus paint.** When the project is complete, the KONO Community Benefits Association will celebrate by inviting the residents and merchants of KONO and the surrounding area to a First Friday Art Walk & Talk to listen to the artist share their inspirations and the process behind the project. *If a winner is a group design from a class or school, the school will receive the monetary award. **Paint will be supplied unless artists want to supply their own at their own expense; artists are responsible for bringing their own brushes, water, and drop cloths and making sure the sidewalks remain clean. Important Dates Deadline for submissions: March 1, 2012 Notifications to final artists: Week of March 19, 2012 Installation of art/Painting on Utility Boxes: Completed by April 30, 2012 Art-Walk and Talk: Friday May 4, 2012 Eligibility The project is open to artists who live and/or work in Oakland, CA. Stipend Some supplies will be provided, plus a stipend of $500 per box. Artists may paint more than one box. Application Requirements To be considered for the KONO Utility Box Art Project, artists must submit the following via US mail or email: 1. Three digital jpeg images of previously completed artwork (mailed on a CD or DVD, or sent as an email attachment) or link to view your work online. Maximum width 1000px; Maximum dpi 300 pixels.

Label each image as follows: lastname_firstname_image1.jpg (or tiff) lastname_firstname_image2.jpg (or tiff) 2. Image List (PDF format if sent via email). The number on the image list should correspond with the number on the image file. Please include: media, size of the work (HxWxD), title, date and a brief description of the artwork if necessary. 3. One copy of a written preliminary statement, not to exceed one page, which addresses your interest in this project and how you would approach the project (PDF format if sent via email). 4. Illustrations or a 3-D small-scale mock-up of what you plan to paint on the box. The box dimensions are either 33x67x24 or 58x50x17 with handles and doors that swing open. NOTE: Application materials and CDs will NOT be returned upon completion of the selection process. If you strongly feel you need your designs or CD back, please include a stamped envelope with sufficient postage for the return of the CD or stop by the office to pick up during business hours. Application Deadline The application deadline for this project is Thursday, March 1, 2012. Applications not received by 5 pm will not be considered. DO NOT SEND ORIGINAL ARTWORK. Applicants are strongly encouraged to retain a completed copy of their application for their records. Late applications will not be considered. Don not bind or staple materials. Every effort will be made to ensure handling of materials submitted. However, the KONO Community Benefit District will not be responsible for any loss or damage. SELECTION PROCESS & TIMELINE After the deadline, the KONO Marketing & Identity Committee will meet and decide on finalists. The designs will then be presented to the Board of Directors of the KONO CBD and to the City of Oaklands Public Art Advisory Committee. Notifications will be sent to artists the week of March 19, 2012.
