He was a leader of the publicans "the chief among publicans." The custom , ary comparison between the humble pub . , lican and the proud Pharisee often blocks the true meaning of these two images in . our minds. However, to understand the - , Gospel correctly, one must picture them 8 clearly. The Pharisees were truly right . , eous men. If on our lips the name , "Pharisee" sounds as condemnation, in , the days of Christ and during the first decades of Christianity this was not so. , . On the other hand, Publicans . were truly sinners, who broke the funda , mental commandments of the Lord. Pub . licans collected taxes from the Hebrews - , for the Romans. One must remember that , the Jews, well conscious of their special The Calling of Zacchaeus position of being divinely chosen, gloried , , in the fact that they were "Abraham's . seed, and were never in bondage to any , man" (Jn. 8:33). And now, as a result of . well-known historical circumstances, they found them, selves under submission; subjects to a proud, coarse, "iron" , , , race of pagan Romans. And the yoke of this submission , -, . was being pulled tighter and tighter and was beginning to be felt more and more. The most tangible and obvious sign . of the submission and subjugation of the Jews to the Ro, mans was the payment of every imaginable tax and tribute . by the Jews to their conquerors. For the Jews, as for all an , , cient people, paying tribute was mainly a symbol of subju . gation. And the Romans, not at all abashed before a con : quered people, roughly and decisively demanded of them ( 19, 7). both customary and additional taxes. Of course the Jews , , paid with hatred and disgust. Not in vain, desiring to com , . promise the Lord in the eyes of His people, did the Saddu , , cees ask Him, "Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar?" (Mt. 22:17). They knew that if Christ would say that one should . , not give tribute to Caesar, it would be easy to accuse Him , before the Romans, and if He would say that tribute should , , , be paid, He would hopelessly compromise Himself in the . , eyes of the people. source: Ishmaelite.blogspot.com . very Christian, no doubt, wants to celebrate Christmas with their family so as to share their wishes and hopes for the people that they love most. We always hear the phrases Christ is Born! and Christ is Baptized! to remind us that at the very forefront of our celebrations is our faith. For Ukrainians and Americans alike, the Church has maintained a fundamental place in the structure of their families. Its a place where traditions are passed down and where people find peace. This is why it is so appropriate for our parish of St. Joseph to celebrate its name day during this time of the year. This year, the parish celebrated its name day on January 15th. The celebrations began with a bilingual Divine Liturgy and continued when nearly 400 guests joined in a luncheon in the church hall. The liturgy was celebrated by the pastor, Fr. Mykola Buryadnyk and Fr. Volodymyr Kushnir. Fr. Yaroslav Mendyuk from St. Josaphat in Munster, Indiana and Fr. Myron Panchuk assisted in the liturgy and we were fortunate enough to see associate pastor Fr. Tom Glynn visit during the luncheon. The liturgy, as usual, was sung by the parishs choir Irmos. The parish theater group Homin and childrens theater school Dyvo treated the guests to a traditional, authentic Ukrainian vertep. Several parishioners graciously donated their time and talent to the preparation of the meal so that all of the parishs guests could, with their respective families break off a piece of the parish prosphora. Among the organizations that greeted the parish on its name day, Rosalie Deeds of the Spirit of St. Joseph Society, Myroslav Kalyniouk of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (Illinois Division), and Valentina Sidelnik on behalf of Selfrelience Ukrainian Federal Credit Union presented gifts to the parish. Every year, the parish community of St. Joseph the Betrothed in Chicago grows larger and larger; the faithful continually bring their friends and loved ones to feel a part of the Ukrainian Christian family so that to experience the Word of God in a culturally and personally relatable way. St. John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople

-Part 2But first of all it is necessary for us to recognize, by which baptism He was baptized, and then it will be clear for us. By which baptism indeed was He baptized? -Not the Jewish, nor ours, nor John's. For whom, since thou from thine own aspect of baptism dost perceive, that He was baptized not by reason of sin and not having need of the gift of the Spirit; therefore, as we have demonstrated, this baptism was alien to the one and to the other. Hence it is evident, that He came to Jordan not for the forgiveness of sins and not for receiving the gifts of the Spirit. But so that some from those present then should not think, that He came for repentance like others, listen to how John precluded this. What he then spoke to the others then was: "Bear ye fruits worthy of repentance"; but listen what he said to Him: "I have need to be baptized of Thee, and Thou art come to me?" (Mt 3:8, 14). With these words he demonstrated, that Christ came to him not through that need with which people came, and that He was so far from the need to be baptized for this reason -- so much more sublime and perfectly purer than Baptism itself. For whom was He baptized, if this was done not for repentance, nor for the remission of sins, nor for receiving the gifts of the Spirit? Through the other two reasons, of which about the one the disciple speaks, and about the other He Himself spoke to John. Which reason of this baptism did John declare? Namely, that Christ should become known to the people, as Paul also mentions: "John therefore baptized with the baptism of repentance, so that through him they should believe on Him that cometh" (Acts 19:4); this was the consequence of the baptism. If John had gone to the home of each and, standing at the door, had spoken out for Christ and said: "He is the Son of God," such a testimony would have been suspicious, and this deed would have been extremely perplexing. So too, if he in advocating Christ had gone into the synagogues and witnessed to Him, this testimony of his might be suspiciously fabricated. But when all the people thronged out from all the cities to Jordan and remained on the banks of the river, and when He Himself came to be baptized and received the testimony of the Father by a voice from above and by the coming-upon of the Spirit in the form of a dove, then the testimony of John about Him was made beyond all questioning. And since he said: "and I knew Him not" (Jn 1:31), his testimony put forth is trustworthy. They were kindred after the flesh between themselves "wherefore Elizabeth, thy kinswoman, hath also conceived a son" -- said the Angel to Mary about the mother of John (Lk. 1: 36); if however the mothers were relatives, then obviously so also were the children. Thus, since they were kinsmen -- in order that it should not seem that John would testify concerning Christ because of kinship, the grace of the Spirit organized it such, that John spent all his early years in the wilderness, so that it should not seem that John had declared his testimony out of friendship or some similar reason. But John, as he was instructed of God, thus also announced about Him, No. 4 -4wherein also he did say: "and I knew Him not." From whence didst thou find out? "He having sent me that sayeth to baptize with water, That One did tell me" What did He tell thee? "Over Him thou shalt see the Spirit descending, like to a dove, and abiding over Him, That One is baptized by the Holy Spirit" (Jn 1:32-33). Dost thou see, that the Holy Spirit did not descend as in a first time then coming down upon Him, but in order to point out that preached by His inspiration -- as though by a finger, it pointed Him out to all. For this reason He came to baptism. And there is a second reason, about which He Himself spoke -- what exactly is it? When John said: "I have need to be baptized of Thee, and Thou art come to me?" -- He answered thus: "stay now, for thus it becometh us to fulfill every righteousness" (Mt 3:14-15). Dost thou see the meekness of the servant? Dost thou see the humility of the Master? What does He mean: "to fulfill every righteousness?" By righteousness is meant the fulfillment of all the commandments, as is said: "both were righteous, walking faultlessly in the commandments of the Lord" (Lk 1:6). Since fulfilling this righteousness was necessary for all people -- but no one of them kept it or fulfilled it -- Christ came then and fulfilled this righteousness. And what righteousness is there, someone will say, in being baptized? Obedience for a prophet was righteous. As Christ was circumcised, offered sacrifice, kept the Sabbath and observed the Jewish feasts, so also He added this remaining thing, that He was obedient to having been baptized by a prophet. It was the will of God then, that all should be baptized -- about which listen, as John speaks: "He having sent me to baptize with water" (Jn 1:33); so also Christ: "the publicans and the people do justify God, having been baptized with the baptism of John; the Pharisees and the lawyers reject the counsel of God concerning themselves, not having been baptized by him" (Lk 7:29-30). Thus, if obedience to God constitutes righteousness, and God sent John to baptize the nation, then Christ has also fulfilled this along with all the other commandments.

Parish News
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ! Having celebrated the Christmas holidays, we enter the new 2012 year with new hopes and ideas. Every one of us makes resolutions for this year to serve our family and God and live by the message He gives us. In the same way, we, as a community of Christians, are all called to reexamine the teachings of Gods Word, so that it can be accessible to everybody. Therefore, based on the spiritual needs of our parishioners, we, your pastors, have decided to introduce some changes so that to better accept and preach Gods Word, namely on Sundays: 1. The Divine Liturgy at 8am will be served in the English Language. 2. The Divine Liturgy at 9:30am will be served in the Ukrainian Language. 3. The Liturgy at 11:30am will be designated for children, with the service in Ukrainian, though the readings and homily will be geared to children in both languages. Our Parish is composed of a congregation who were led by God to serve Him in this community. Some of us have been raised in this country and have worked their entire lives to building the churches we worship in today, others have appreciated the home they have been welcomed in to. We cannot forget that God also calls the people who have come here recently from Ukraine. May the all-merciful God send His Holy Spirit on our parish so that we may continue our journey in serving Him and work for the Glory of God and Future Generations.
