PhD Funding Opportunities 2011-12
GUIDELINES FOR APPLICANTS
The School's postgraduate community is one of the UK's largest and most diverse in the UK,
enjoying state-of-the-art facilities and excellent support within a high-quality research environment.
In step with our continuing expansion, we are enhancing our support for students registering for a
research (PhD) degree in 2011-12. We are offering:
Research Scholar Award
At least one Research Scholar Award will be offered to an applicant studying any PhD programme
in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures. Candidates can be UK/EU or International PhD
students, studying on a full-time or part-time basis. Applicants must possess a first class honours
degree or its international equivalent and hold a master's degree, ideally at distinction level. The
award will provide the payment of fees directly to the University and a maintenance bursary of
7,500 per annum (pro-rata for part-time students), which is paid in quarterly instalments
(October/January/April/July) by bank transfer (by arrangement with the Student Services Centre).
The closing date for receipt of the PhD Funding Application Form for the Research Scholar Award is
Friday 15 April 2011. To ensure that you are holding an offer of a place by the closing
date, you are advised to submit your online application for a place on the programme no
later than Friday 1 April 2011.
This competition is open only to new PhD applicants, not currently registered PhD students. It is
anticipated that decisions will be made in June 2011. Please note, only successful and reserve
candidates will be contacted.

Please note, the Graduate Scholarship must be undertaken in conjunction with a PhD
programme of study in the named discipline above. Please note that the Film Graduate
Scholarship may be held in any appropriate discipline. In most cases, the holder of the
full-time Graduate Scholarship will be required to teach for 3 hours per week.
The full-time Graduate Scholarship award is open to Home/EU and International applicants and
comprises two elements:

the payment of fees directly to the University: for Home/EU students fees will be
paid in full, for International students fees will be paid in part (at Home/EU rate),
or in full, budget permitting. [The 2011-12 Home/EU fees are not yet set, for
the 2010-11 academic session the Home/EU fees are 3,466 per annum. The
International fees for 2011-12 are 11,700 per annum].

For the Graduate Scholarship, you must apply and have been accepted for a PhD programme of
study in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures. Applicants must be holding an offer

To ensure that you are holding an offer of a place by the closing date, you are advised to
submit your online application for a place on the programme no later than Friday 1 April
2011.
The Graduate Scholarships are available only to new PhD applicants, not currently

Please note, applicants may be invited for (telephone) interview if deemed necessary.

Please note, for successful applicants the Graduate Scholarship award will be made only if you
are unsuccessful in obtaining full funding in external funding competitions (eg. AHRC or any other
external body). Applicants cannot simultaneously hold a full AHRC or any other external award and
a University of Manchester School award.

Please note, training may be required for all new Graduate Scholarships; further
information will be communicated as appropriate.




PhD Fee Bursaries (assistance with tuition fees)
We are offering a number of fee bursaries for UK/EU and International PhD students. The bursary
will pay at least 3,000 towards tuition fees (if studying on a full-time basis, pro-rata if studying on
a part-time basis).
Application Information
The closing date for receipt of the Funding Application Form for the PhD Fee Bursaries is Friday 15
April 2011. To ensure that you are holding an offer of a place by the closing date, you are
advised to submit your online application for a place on the programme no later than
Friday 1 April 2011.
This competition is open only to new PhD applicants, not currently registered PhD students. It is

For successful applicants the award will be paid only if you are unsuccessful in external funding
competitions (e.g. AHRC/ESRC or similar). Applicants cannot hold a full external award from bodies
such as AHRC/ESRC or any other external agency and a School studentship award simultaneously.

closing date in order to be included in any of the funding
competitions.

You may apply for the Fee Bursary as well as the Research Scholar Award and the
Graduate Scholarship, but any applicant who does so will automatically be withdrawn
from the Fee Bursary competition if they are offered and accept a Research Scholar
Award or a Graduate Scholarship. Other applicants who are on the Research Scholar
Award or Graduate Scholarship shortlist will remain in the competition for the Fee
Bursaries.
PhD Scholarship in Israeli and Middle Eastern Studies
One fully funded PhD Studentship in Israeli and Middle Eastern Studies is available. This award is
open to Home/EU or International applicants who meet the criteria of the studentship and have
been accepted onto the PhD Middle Eastern Studies programme.

The award will cover full fees and maintenance. The maintenance per annum will be at the Arts and
Humanities Research Council (AHRC) level, which is 13,590 for the 2011-12 academic year.

To be eligible for this award your research proposals must fit one of the following two themes:

1. Social, political and/or cultural aspects linked to the experiences of Jews in any area of the Arab
Middle East in the 20th century.

2. Social, political and/or cultural aspects linked to the experiences of Israel's and/or
women and/or Palestinian-Arab citizens in the post-1948 period.

Applicants must possess a near-native competence of Hebrew and/or Arabic and proven advance
reading knowledge in one of these languages.

Brook Award in English Language or Medieval English
Literature
Applicants studying a PhD in English Language or Medieval English Literature are eligible to apply
for the Brook Award. This award provides a 3 year maintenance bursary of 4,000 per annum. This
award can be held by students in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures (for English
Language) or in the School of Arts, Histories and Cultures (for Medieval English Literature).
The closing date for applications to this scheme is Friday 15 April 2011. To ensure that you are
holding an offer of a place by the closing date, you are advised to submit your online
application for a place on the programme no later than Friday 1 April 2011.
