Award Dinner at Alumni Hall on 1 September 2011. The event was hosted by Art Athens 78, Director of the Stockdale Center at USNA. Superintendent VADM Miller provided opening remarks and the guest speaker was LtGen John Wissler 78.There were approximately 40 midshipmen in attendance, all of whom were selected for their outstanding analysis of an ethics issue. During the dinner, on behalf of the Class of 81, Steve Metz (4) presented a framed print and ship coins from the LAWRENCE (DDG-4) commissioning ceremony, which he had attended. The picture will be displayed at the Stockdale Center. Mrs. Lawrence was on hand for the dinner. All of us had a chance to talk with her, and she is still as lovely and elegant as we all remember her as midshipmen. In the picture, left to right are Junior Ortiz, Mark Hyman, Mary Gunther, Jim Ahlgrimm, Steve Metz, Ric Van Antwerp, Mike Carucci, Paul Jaeger, Steve Moran, Mrs. Lawrence, Ava Howard, and Paul Imps. Jim thanks for the recap. A very worthy program for the Class to be a part of. Keith Mahosky (6) wrote to let us know of his retirement from the Navy Reserve. Besides sending me the obligatory Classmate photo from his retirement, he was kind enough to send me updates on everyone in attendance. His report: I retired after a 30 year career, 6 Active, 24 Reserve. The last decade was spent in a variety of command billets, primarily in the submarine training and waterfront support community. I was joined by fellow 6th company survivors Tom Hartline, Rowley Molina, Cory Frank, Tim Garrold, Tims wife Vicki (Defiore-35th Co.), and John Judge, 6th company 82. Happy New Year 81! Hope everyone had a great holiday. I am still reveling in memories from our 30 year reunion. And what a reunion it was! Three days of nonstop fun, starting with a well attended golf tournament, and followed by a great crab feast, a moving memorial service, our Class meeting, a superb Class dinner reception, and an awesome tailgate party. For icing on the cake, we beat Troy. Everything about the weekend was great. Before we get into Class news, we owe a huge thank you to our reunion coordinator, Nelson Moe (24). I am sure everyone will agree that Nelson did a superb job. Not only did he do most of the heavy lifting, he has served as our Class VP for the past 10 years.Thank you Nelson for all you have done for our Class. I am sorry to report that we recently lost another Classmate. Joe Quinn (1) passed away on December 1. His first company roommate, Bob Schulze, wrote the following about Joe: I will always remember Joe as loyal and true friend. Honest and direct, we always knew where he stood on any topic (or person, for that matter). Joe was slow to anger but always quick to forgive and forget. He was athletic and modest, able to find humor in everything and always enjoyed a good joke. I never had a chance to see Joe after graduation except for one brief visit in Florida many years ago. He and I always enjoyed reminiscing about our days in Annapolis. So I will remember him as he was: Joseph Thomas Francis Quinn, Upper Darby PA, First Company, plebe summer squad mate, plebe year roommate, intramural sports teammate, 81 Classmate and friend. On behalf of the Class I would like to express my deepest sympathies to Joes family. Our outgoing Prez, Jim Ahlgrimm (34), sent in a recap of the 2011 annual Admiral William P. Lawrence Ethics Essay

2 masters degrees in education at Rutgers. Ben, 22, is publishing his first novel with Three Rivers Publishing (a Division of Random House). Mariah, 18, is beginning college at IUP for English and Film, while Tess, 14, is in 8th grade. I just left ENERCON Services after 12+ years as a senior manager where I was leading business development and project management for facility decommissioning, engineering and environmental cleanup programs for both commercial and government clients. I am just now starting in my role as Vice President of JGMS, an engineering and environmental company that supports clients with engineering and environmental professionals for projects in both the commercial and government sectors. Tom Hartline: Since leaving active duty as a helicopter pilot after over 10 years, I have worked for NASA. I spent 14 years supporting the Space Shuttle at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL. In 2007, I was selected for the Senior Executive Service and moved to Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, OH as the Safety and Mission Assurance Director. In 2009, I retired from the Navy Reserve with most of my reserve time as a Scientific and Technical Intelligence Officer. I continue to be active with the Naval Academy as the Blue & Gold Area Coordinator for Northeast Ohio. My wife Mary and I are coming up on 28 years of marriage and we have four children, Elizabeth 24 who graduated from Auburn University as a Wildlife Science major last year, and 15 year old triplets,Victoria, Abigail and Thomas who are in 10th grade. Tim Garrold: I retired in 2006 after 32 years in uniform. I didnt want to, but it was time. It was a good ride while it lasted and in my current position at the Naval War College, Im still contributing to the fight. 30 years in May. Our oldest, Chessa, graduated from USNA in 2009 (as we like to say, the square root of 81 is 9), our middle child, Brianna, graduated from The College of Notre Dame of Maryland in 2010 and is currently completing an MA at George Washington University in DC, and our youngest, Scott, is a Junior at the University of Rhode Island. Im about half way through an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, working full time and going to school full time. Its keeping me young. It keeps me tired. My lifetime record of zero all-nighters, however, remains intact. Cory Frank: My wife Odette and I have been married for 25 years and live here in sunny San Diego with our two grown sons Brian and Jeremy, and niece Beverly (thankful to say that all are happy and working!). I left active duty after 10 years in Cryptology and retired from the reserves in 2003. Most of my combined military and civilian career has been in the development and life cycle support of various government information systems. Four years ago it became time for something different and I joined international business as a senior database engineer for Yahoo, Inc. We are really enjoying life in SoCal, along with occasional trips to visit family in the Philippines. Rowley Molina:Ten years of active duty as a Surface Warfare Officer took me to duty stations in Yokosuka, Japan, Mayport, FL, Norfolk,VA, and USNA. Three years in the Reserves were spent in a Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare (MIUW) unit in Little Creek before I weighed anchor and set sail for the corporate world. My corporate career has primarily been in the Baltimore, MD area and focused on IT and Information Security leadership roles. Life has been full of challenges and opportunities in various industries ranging from financial to healthcare to government contracting.Todays opportunity is on the MD Eastern Shore in the corporate offices of Perdue where it still takes a tough man to make a tender chicken.

After commissioning and while attending SWOS and MPA School in Newport, RI I met the love of my life Christine. We will be married thirty years in March and have been blessed with daughters Jess (born in Yokosuka, Japan) and Rae (born in Annapolis). Living near Rehoboth Beach, DE lets us enjoy the beach life while being close enough to Annapolis for Navy Football and other events in the Yard. Keith, thank you for getting such great updates, and congratulations. Tom Hoffman (27) is our newest Classmate living here in the aloha state. He used the occasion for his first ever submission to Shipmate. I was holding off on writing to Shipmate until I accomplished something of note.Well, I finally did. Lotta and I were married in Cocoa Beach, FL, on 4 July 2011. My son, Nick, is a Sophomore at the University of Florida and is in the Navy ROTC program. He seems to be having a lot more fun in college than I did 30 years ago. I retired from the Air Force in 2009 as a flight surgeon. I worked as a contract flight surgeon for NASA for a couple years after that. I ran into Kay Hire (16), Brent Jett (25), and Wendy Lawrence (13) during that time. While active duty I traveled to Rota, Spain a few times and was hosted by the base commander, Earl Hampton. A few years ago my company mate Tim Jarman and his lovely wife, Lois, visited me in Cocoa Beach. Lois is about to pin on her PhD. Im still running and keep in touch with fellow runner, Kevin McCarthy 83. Lotta and I moved here to Hawaii a couple months ago. I work as a contract flight surgeon at Hickam AFB.Were hoping to stay in Hawaii for a while. Tom, great to have you here on island. Thanks for the note.

Good Morning, 82! Here is your ray of sunshine in the otherwise doldrums of the Dark Ages. You certainly remember this time of year: football season was long over, Christmas vacation was in the rear view mirror, and Cold, Dark and Dreary were in the Plan of the Day until Spring Break. Fieldball was played on a frozen Hospital Point field, visible breath was your constant companion during your perimeter run, and hot chocolate with honey dipped donuts made getting up for breakfast worthwhile. We were invited to the Formal P-Rade as guests of the Supe. I did get a photo of me and Jordy there just to prove we could find it! A reception at the Supes house ended the afternoon in the yard. Friday night found us at Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadiums Banquet room. We had a great dinner and the bar was open. The 1981 Football Highlights reel was playing on the TVs, and Tim Jordan showcased a veritable treasure trove of memorabilia, including the packaging from the panty hose (yes, you read correctly) that they gave us to try and keep warm during the game. Some of us slipped away from the dinner and got a tour of the stadium locker room facilities. Its much bigger than the dungeon under the Southwest corner of the stadium that we used but it smells worse than I recalled. Stale sweat is never really appealing. All in all it was a very wonderful weekend. We reconnected with some guys not seen in, well 30 years.

I think at the time I was enjoying a Trafalgar Ale and Ocho was having a Nelsons Blood, a very stout porter with almost-eat-it-with-a-spoon thickness. I guess for somebody who got a D in history this gave me a better appreciation for naval history.

CAPT John W. Judge (6) reports on his retirement after 29 years of active and reserve service: My older son, LTJG John H. LTJG Judge is currently serving as Main Propulsion Assistant on USS SANTA FE (SSN 763), homeported in Pearl Harbor, and he earned his Dolphins (completed submarine warfare qualifications) on WESTPAC deployment. The ceremony was held onboard Display Ship BARRY at the Washington Navy Yard, DC, on 10 September. Rear Admiral Jay Deloach (USNA 78), Director, Naval History and Heritage Command, was the guest speaker, and Rear Admiral Bob Kamensky,Vice Commander, Submarine Forces, also attended. It was great to get caught up and reminisce about our classmates and those crazy days spent in The Yard. Dave is CEO for LTF Training, a non-profit providing quality teaching training. Hes doing well and looking forward to the 30th reunion. John Woody Wood checks in from Singapore: The Class of 83 had a small reunion at the International Seapower Symposium in Newport, RI. Congratulations Dietrich (picture to follow) Joe Harding sends in this update: Good Morning Navy (er Chris), Thanks for putting together all the Shipmate inputs. A thankless task but thanks anyway. I think this is my second update in 28 years but it will be brief. The Navy Reserve has kicked me to the bench (VTU) long ago but there is still something about putting on that uniform. Alice (my wife of almost 23 years) and I visited USNA this fall during 2/C Parents Weekend. We sat in on our daughter Christys classes (Christy Harding 13), ate in King Hall (photo attached), briefly toured 17th Company spaces, watched the parade, and attended the Gospel Choir and the Mens and Womens Glee Club concert that evening. That was only the first day. Saturday was also a full day including a lengthy Mid Store run in the morning, the football game, and even a late, late dinner in D.C. I would have to give a big thumbs up for the football stadium upgrades and improvements to the academic buildings (Sampson, Michelson, Chauvenet, Luce in particular) and King Hall. I know I am not the first to report this but the Mid Store is huge and novices should not enter without GPS technology. I have been teaching high school (most recently Geometry and AP Statistics) and coaching tennis in Visalia, California for 20+ years since I left active duty. Alice and I are dealing with empty nest syndrome since our youngest baby bird, Hannah, recently flew south to San Diego to pursue college and much nicer weather. That is all. Carry on, Joe

We headed out to the 84 tent at halftime and enjoyed chatting with a few other classmates, including Steve Lott, Bill Castenada, and Sharon Pfeiffer. We spent the end of the game talking with Todd Lutton and his wife Patty. They go to all the games and it was fun seeing them also - Todd and I were roomies in Orlando. What a fun, football fall I have enjoyed this year! This is my first soccer-free fall in seven years so I have been taking advantage of my extra time and was able to attend two Navy games this year (and more importantly, get to the Naval Academy Store aka the Mid Store). I was able to attend the Scout Day football game against Troy University. Being a guest of Mary Beth Chipkevich,

University and Kasey is a junior in high school. Tori is the FOURTH GENERATION of Goins to serve in the Navy! Rockys wife, Susan, was also a Navy Cryptology officer from Florida State University when he met her in San Diego. The class of 84 is everywhere in Tulsa, as George Carradini and Kasey Cregge Carradini are leaders in the Tulsa Alumni Chapter! While attending a Washington, D.C. Senior Care conference in September, Rocky had dinner with Miles Baker, who is currently on an Alaskan Senators staff. (Note from Toni: The press release on Miles appointment is later in this article. Congratulations, Miles!) Rocky is excited about the upcoming Army Navy Game and will be attending with his people of the 29th Company, Mark Stys, Mike (Max) McGee and George Zamka and their better halves. Beat Army! Readiness Directorate is such a big deal that the commanders of the Pacific Fleet and Fleet Forces Command - two four-star Admirals - released a message to their fleets announcing its standup. John Funk is the Executive Assistant to RADM Patrick Brady 81, Commander Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command. John recently completed a successful command tour in USS Bonhomme Richard. Tim Pence arrived at SPAWAR this past summer after completing a tour at U.S. Naval Forces Japan. Here at SPAWAR, he serves on the staff of RDML Jim Rodman, SPAWARs Chief Engineer. The final input for this issue is from the Alumni News on usna.com and highlights the accomplishments of Miles Baker. Senator Lisa Murkowski has hired three new staff members to help her shape upcoming work with an Alaska-centric vision: a Legislative Director and two Legislative Assistants. These new staffers bring years of expertise to the table and I welcome their contributions on behalf of Alaska. Miles Baker joins the Murkowski team as a Legislative Assistant in the field of finance and budgeting after several years in the Alaska State Legislature. Baker was senior staffer for Senator Bert Stedman (R-Sitka) in Juneau, where he worked on state finance and appropriations policy for the Senate Finance Committee. Baker began his professional career as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps serving with two units in Okinawa, Japan. He graduated from West Anchorage High School and the U.S. Naval Academy, and received an MBA from UCLAs Anderson School of Business. Well that is all that I have to report now. Please consider sending me an updateI have found the New Year to be a tough time to get input. HELP! Warm regards, Toni Kasprzak Chase and The Staff

Four of us managed to graduate as baseball players and our paths have recently crossed. I just completed a tour as the Program Manager at Pax River for the Navys Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) program. Scott Wild (34) (pitcher) recently joined the BAMS team. Scott retired from the Supply Corps and spent a few years with industry before returning to Government Service as a civilian. big office at OPNAV/N88. Dan McNamara (25) is in Pax River serving as the Program Manager for our Aerial Targets program office (PMA 208). From the 33rd Herd, Chuck Sharkey recently completed an overseas IA with the Reserves. Rob Haidvogel (33) is retiredretired and raising his family in Michigan. I ran into Jamie Vandiver (33) in San Diego. Hes still doing great things for the Helo Community. Saw John Winkler (33) at the Texas Bowl. Im still serving at NAVAIR in Pax and have two daughters in high school and a son who is a 2/c at USNA. We have season tickets to Navy Football with great parking right across from the 85 Tailgater thanks to Mike Rudy Randolph (17). Scott Cull (34): We currently are living in Memphis, TN. Jennie and the kids moved here in 2004 when I received orders to the Pentagon. I spent the end of 2005 and most of 2006 in Yemen enjoying the beautiful scenery and wonderful food (actually did put on 20 pounds). Following my year in Yemen, I headed back to the Pentagon and began working on my retirement. I retired June of 2007 and began to live full time in Memphis (I do miss my frequent flier miles, but sometimes you just have to make sacrifices). Both of my sons have moved on and now live in San Diego and my daughter Sarah is in her sophomore year of high school. Jennie is doing most of the traveling as a Managing Director for KPMG on the consulting side, and I spend my days teaching geometry and algebra II to 80 girls at a private all girls school. I finished my Masters in Teaching this May and have been teaching full time for almost two years now. Sarah started this year at Hutchison School and during the enrollment process the school asked if I would like to teach math for them. Lost a few dollars compared to my cushy public school teaching job, have 100 fewer students and now have a full time chauffeur (Sarah now has her permit), but I did have to replace a mirror a few weeks back. Ouch! Paul Severs (31): Long time, no Shipmate update. After graduation, I went SWO and served on several ships and staffs on both coasts and Wash D.C. I am retiring this fall after a great career serving with countless wonderful and dedicated professionals. Married with four kids. Our oldest son

Pete joined the Class of 2015 this summer (in same company as Vic Oteros (25) son. I hope to see many Classmates at tailgaters in the years ahead. Beat Army. Bob McLean (34): We are now back in DC at the Pentagon on the OPNAV staff, my dues for the privilege of two exciting command tours. We just left Japan this summer where I was the CO at NAVFAC Far East in Yokosuka - a great place to live and work. Previously I was the Commodore for the 22nd Seabee Regiment in Gulfport, MS with an OIF deployment to Al Anbar. Lisa and I just celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary and have two great kids - Devon, 9 and Callum, 8. Congratulations to Richard Snow (2) who was recently named as the Director of the Bureau of Labor Standards for the Maine Department of Labor. Sad news to report. For those of you who havent heard, our classmate Ed Pogue (23) passed away in September. Our condolences to his wife Diana and family.

Presidents Corner On behalf of the entire Class, a big shout out and BRAVO ZULU to J. Eric Smith who went above and beyond to plan and execute a fantastic 25th Reunion for us all this past October. For more than 15 years, Eric has directly supported our class in a variety of volunteer positions most recently as President. Eric, thank you! It was really fantastic to see so many of you make the effort to attend the reunion. Those of us who were there had a terrific time. For those of you who couldnt make it, we hope to see you at the 30th! Speaking of the 30th, over the next five years, our Class will be raising money for a specific designated gift to the Naval Academy a Class Project. We get to do this again from 2021-2026 for our 40th, and then one final time from 2031-2036 where we will present a final Class Project gift at our 50th Reunion. Thank you to all who took part in the survey conducted earlier this year to determine what we most wanted to support as a Class. Based on your inputs,

Happy New Year and welcome to the Dark Ages! Stay warm and may your 2012 be blessed with health, fulfillment and prosperity. For all of you still serving in harms way, our prayers go with you. Please note that there are some requested charities and if you are so moved, you may contribute in Johns behalf. I would ask you to pass along any memories, photos or stories about John so we can share them with the Class and with his Family. In the words of Johns Father, He remained truly BLUE & GOLD to

Parrott Funeral Home & Crematory, Fairburn, 770-964-4800 Chris Dunphy sends, Been a long time since I have written in, takes me back to the pre-internet days, when Owen Duke, Dick Hoffman and I would entertain ourselves while stationed at Subic Bay and write letters to Shipmate that were mostly fiction about classmates. Wolfie would print them just to have something in column. As we said, it is not mean if it is funny. I had the honor of hosting a mini reunion here in Titletown Boston on 2021 May (24 years to the day the Navy accidently commissioned metook them 20 years to correct that error). Greg Stefanon, Jim Fisher, Spike Bell, Jeff Shirk and (for 15 hours Dom Oddo) made the trek to Boston for the first Cubs/Red Sox series at Fenway since the Sox beat the Cubs in the 1918 World Series. Sadly Jim Matheson and Gabriel Gomez, who are in the Boston area, had prior commitments or told me that, based on the lineup. A short but very entertaining reunion. Jeff awarded MVP for driving up from Pcola to join the festivities. He stopped in New York to have lunch with Dom and Dawn Oddo, and Dom thought it was a good idea to join Jeff for the final leg into Boston, despite have to leave via Amtrack the next AM to get back to NY (earning him Inspiration Award). Nice quiet Friday night for 3 of us old NAPSters in local sports bar watching Sox/Cubs, trading fashion tips and telling lies. Everyone else arrived on Sat AM, with enough time to barbeque and watch the Bruins epically blow a 3-0 lead against Tampa Bay in the Stanley Cup race (they made up for it) Had great Sat night at Fenway catching up, till the Sox turned into 7 yr old T-ball team and blew a 3-1 lead by giving up 8 in the 8th. (Love my classmates but USNA 87 not good karma for the home town teams) We departed Fenway (9-3 Sox loss Stef estatic, given Chitown as of late) and spent rest of evening enjoying the diverse cultural and social experiences that Boston has to offer from 11PM to 2AM. All in all, a successful reunion: no one woke up needing a priest, to cancel a credit card, emergency dental work or with a tattoo on their face. I was up at 6AM for the first of 3 trips to Logan Airport on Sunday (Fish is our Honorman, made 8 AM flight reservation and actually made flight-true grit). Jeff loaded home GPS LAT/LONG into his BMW autopilot, started back to P-cola and I assume went to sleep(I had to loan him some CDs for return trip, drove the whole way up with just a Billy Ray Cyrus CD) Quick Update: Greg is FBI agent in Chicago, Spike flying for Jet Blue living in San Diego (and USNR 0-6), Jeff runs his own mortgage business in P-cola. Dom has his own import/export business in NY, Fish is 0-6 en-route from DC to P-cola this summer as Deputy Commodore of TRAWING FIVE and will fleet up to Commodore. I am with Raytheon Business Development here in Mass. If anyone is heading this way, give a shout, we always have an extra room. Dave Berman had some exciting news, I have announced my intention to seek the circuit court bench in Kenosha County, Wisconsin. Please take the time to review, or like my Dave Berman for Facebook page. If Circuit Court Judge you feel so inclined, please feel free to contact me via message to discuss any way that you can further assist my efforts. Thanks, and God bless. ~ Dave. Dont speed in Minnesota! Word has it theres a new Trooper on the scene Its been a long year transitioning from the military to my new position; Minnesota State Trooper. I was pretty sure when I came back from my Iraq deployment with the MN 34th Red Bull Division that Id be ending my military career, and I retired 30 years to the day from when I signed my first enlisted Navy contract. It has been about a year since the process of becoming a State Trooper began; 14 weeks of what the MN State Patrol calls Law Enforcement Training Opportunity (getting us non-law enforcement licensed folks schooled and licensed) and then 12 weeks of Trooper Academy and 4 weeks of additional training after that. I will say, going through the Academy at 48 years old (and the oldest one there) was not something for the faint of heart! The first two weeks saw me lose 18 pounds and about 3 inches off the waistline, my wife was NOT TOO

HAPPY! At 6 2 I was back down to under 188 pounds and looking sort of frail. For the amount of PT and such that you do there just isnt a way to take in enough calories. I will say this, this Academy was the worst modified stress environment that I have ever gone through...the 4 other military modified stress episodes were really quite doable...do what they tell you to do and the wolves focus on the lambs that can follow instructions...this one, they really didnt tell you what to do and any decision you made was the wrong one. The Academy had its purpose and its all behind me now! I did get a chance not to long ago to visit John Midea (36th Company) down at his home in Dallas and I will be taking my son Nick with me to the Navy vs SMU football game in another few weeks. John is doing well and leading the course for Enus Paints in Dallas. John, Kathy and the kids are great hosts... because I think they much prefer us coming to TX instead of them coming to MN to deal with the TUNDRA weather we have! Ill be sure to take pictures and send them from the SMU tailgater and football game. John says that there are quite a few folks in the Dallas area and the tailgater will be memorable! By the way, I have my room reserved for next years reunion! My wife was very excited to head back out to Annapolis after our 20 year event, you all did a great job and Im sure next year will be just as memorable. So...if you happen to be traveling the East Metro of St. Paul, MN and see those emergency lights coming up behind you, hope that you see my smiling face...I dont have enough road time yet to be as cynical as some of my new compatriots. ~ Jim Swanson (36)

In August 2011, Bob Biddinger (father of Dave Biddinger 87) planned a wonderful surprise for returning hero Joe Stillwaggon 87 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Joe had returned from a successful deployment to the mountain region and the Os did not disappoint. Meanwhile, Dave has founded an LLC that provides cyber services to the Federal Government and beyond. He is following the development of the Cyber curriculum at USNA with great interest.

Next up is Joker Jenkins Hello Class of 89! This is my first input to Shipmate. I want to introduce to all my classmates, the newest member to the USNA family, Savannah Margaret Jenkins. She was born 20 Aug 2011 at 19.5-inches and 6lbs 0.5oz. She is a beautiful, healthy little girl and is doing well. Mom is doing a great job while daddy is gone, and daddy is enjoying how to figure out fatherhood! But as you can see, even at 2 months, Savannah knows who to root for. GO NAVY, BITE ARMY! As for me, I completed my CO command ride on USS GARY (FFG-51) conducting a hull swap by bringing GARY from Yokosuka to San Diego. Following command, I did a great year at U.S. FLEET FORCES COMMAND as Deputy EA first for ADM Greenert, and then for ADM Harvey. Now I am finishing my tour at COMNAVAIRPAC as OIC of the Nuclear Power Mobile Training Team (NPMTT). I will report to USS Bonnehomme Richard (LHD-6) for Major Command XO/CO fleet-up in Feb 2012. Take care all. Joker Jenkins (15th Company)

Classmates, Happy 2012!! Youre reading this early in the New Year, but Im writing it just a couple of weeks before the Army-Navy game. Im going to go out on a limb and assume Navy will win (has won!) the game. Lots of stuff to get to this month, so lets get started: First, more from Julie (Niedermaier) and Chris Campbell Just a quick note to announce the birth of our first child, Mark Andrew Campbell, on 5/8/11. Chris is a Track and Field Coach at USNA. After retiring from the Navy at 20 years, I work for a defense contractor in Annapolis. Congratulations to you two on the birth of your child, Julie and Chris!

leadership team and to have the opportunity to build on its success. Next, Immaculata University, State of Pennsylvania has issued the following press release: Lieutenant Colonel John C. Church, Jr., USMCR, has joined Immaculata Universitys English/ Communication Department as a new assistant professor. He is teaching classes on English composition and rhetoric, technical writing, business and professional communication, and crisis communication. I am thrilled to be here at Immaculata. Having served here previously as an adjunct, I had some insight into the Universitys commitment to mission and sense of purpose. However, now I am seeing that sincere dedication and steadfast support to students from faculty and staff every day. I am looking forward to assisting our students in excelling in the classroom, but more importantly, in aiding them in finding their way to becoming good citizens and good stewards of our communities, Commonwealth and country. My wife, Mary Kay, and our four children are just glad to be part of a learning community that is so clear in its mission and so sincere in its outreach and embrace of others as a part of an amazingly wonderful journey. Congratulations Steve and John! Lastly, I have the sad duty of reporting the death of a non-graduate classmate, Bart Tyler Parnall. The following is his obituary: Bart Tyler Parnall, 44, of Waldoboro and Charleston, S.C., passed away Oct. 13 at the Duke University Medical Center, surrounded by his family. A lifelong competitive shooter, Bart had survived primary pulmonary hypertension for seven years, often shooting with an oxygen tank at his side. He was at Duke waiting for a heart-lung transplant. Bart attended the U.S. Naval Academy and Murray State University, where he competed on their rifle teams and set a number of national records. As a subjunior, he won the Prone National Championship at Camp Perry in Ohio. He also won the Maine State Championship three years in a row. Upon graduation from college, he served as an officer and a Ranger in the 101st Airborne. Bart was always moving forward with a positive attitude, a smile, and sense of humor. He was a magical influence in the lives of young people, and derived great satisfaction from being a shooting coach. Bart was a great father,

a talented artist, a marvelous cook, had a black belt in karate, and was a vigorous competitor in all he did. Most importantly, he will be remembered as a kind and generous person. Bart is survived by his wife, Christy; daughter, Madeline; sister, Tracy; and parents,Virginia Buck and Peter Parnall. Peace, Scott

Hello Ninety, I hope the New Year has proved to be a good one already. 2012 will see Navy playing football in Ireland, our twenty-second reunion, and a time to vote for the Commander in Chief. Based on the input Ive received this go around, 2012 will also include a continued display of achievements by our fellow classmates. If you keep thinking to yourself that you want to write in, even just that small yelp to let the rest of us know youre alive and well (Im visualizing the Whos Down in Whoville, hollering at Horton), but tapping something out on your keyboard keeps slipping to the bottom of your to-do list, please take a moment this month and, in the immutable words of Nike, Just Do It! Theres close to a thousand of us running around on this Earth right now who share that one common moment of having thrown our covers in the air at the same time.Though we may be strangers to each other as the years have progressed, we are all staring down the face of middle age together and it doesnt take long to find common ground. Please, send in a quick update on yourself or a classmate youve run into. Kicking us off this time is my fellow seventh company-mate, Mal Sandi who hollers in from Coronado, CA: I recently transferred from the Bureau of Personnel where I had the opportunity to work with classmates Rich Dromerhauser, Chris Engdahl, Curt Renshaw, and Harold Workman. We also had reservist representation via Alex Johnson, Suzanne (Autry) Fiori, and Janet (Fuller) Garrington. While in Millington I got to visit with fellow 7th Company-mates Kersas Dastur and Mike Giles. Kersas retired from active duty and is

Joint Task Force ODYSSEY GUARD (JTF-OG) was established in 11 Aug. 2011 to provide command and control for U.S. joint military contingency operations in Libya in support of Department of State efforts to re-establish the American Embassy in Tripoli and provide security for follow-on engagements. The Joint Enabling Capabilities Command (JECC), an organization under U.S.Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM), deployed 25 personnel to Vicenza, Italy to support the JTF staff, created from U.S. Army Africa, under MajGen. David R. Hogg. The JECC Mission Commander was CAPT Bill McKinley 87 and the XO was CAPT (Select) Glen Leverette 90. Congratulations Geoff! And our final input this month is with regards to Steve MacLaren who was recently selected as the National Nuclear Security Administrations (NNSA) Defense Programs Employee of the Quarter. Steve is a PhD physicist with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), a research and development institution for science and technology applied to national security. He was selected as Employee of the Quarter from individuals throughout the national nuclear security enterprise. Steve was recognized for his work as the lead designer in the recently completed High Energy Density experiments on both the National Ignition Facility and the Z machine. The intricacies of Steves work is such that I much appreciated Gregory Archbolds summary in his email when he forwarded the LLNL article on Steve. Greg, who is also a PhD with LLNL, summarized Steves accomplishment by saying: This is a pretty big deal. Sometimes, just a few words can really put a picture on the weightiness of an achievement. Thankyou, Greg, for forwarding the information and congratulations, Steve, on such a noteworthy accomplishment!

Happy New Year 91!! 2011 was a very good year on many fronts. Lets go through a few highlights...Nuke checklist style: Deep Six Bin Ladencheck. Beat Armycheck. Class of 91 20th Reunioncheck mate!! I usually like to start out each column with a few Bravo Zulus for our classmates around the globe. However, on this occasion, Id like to launch a singularly major BZ.This one goes undoubtedly and unquestionably to Evan Barnet. Over the past year (plus), Evan worked tirelessly as Reunion Committee Chairman to manage the daunting task of organizing the 20th Reunion. As Shipmate scribe, I sat in on many of the evening conference calls and was amazed at the scope of what Evan was managing. Plus, he devoted a tremendous amount of personal time to the task, in the face of very challenging and demanding work and family commitments. The end result: mission accomplished...in a major way! The reunion was a without a doubt a stunning success. But dont take it from me alone: heres some great feedback from Stu Lockhart (Stalag 13): I didnt want too much time to pass before expressing how appreciated your efforts were in coordinating the superb reunion was last weekend. What a ride! I needed most of this week to decompress and get my voice backI have never spoken as much in a 48 hour period as last week! I am sure you all have been inundated this week with follow-up e-mails from classmates far and wide, but I wanted to add my voice to the crowd of those who had an absolutely outstanding time last weekend. My personal thanks to you and our other classmates on the reunion committee who made it all happen. Needless to say, I am looking forward to the 25th reunion already! ~Stu Again, BZ to Evan and the Reunion Committee...what a great team effort! Another highlight of the weekend was the Networking Dinner. As part of the 20th reunion planning process, the reunion committee thought it was a good idea to look outside of the reunion of the needs of our classmates after 20 years. Some were

returning from deployment and transitioning out, some still on active duty, some recently retired, and others looking to make a transition from one job to another. This presented a great opportunity to help those in a tough economy at the senior levels looking for civilian work. The committee turned to Dave Scheu to plan and coordinate the evening. Ironically he was in the job search himself. With months of planning, the committee was able to get sponsorship of the event by companies looking to hire Academy graduates. Thanks to academy focused companies Aflac, Amazon, CSC, Microsoft, and Walmart the cost of the event was covered. Academy graduates and one guest were charge a nominal fee to keep it on their schedule for the weekend. With just over 80 people in attendance including a one-star from USAFA 79, the panel speakers were thrilled to have an opportunity to meet high-caliber Academy graduates with proven leadership experience. After introductions by Rich Brophy, our Class President, and Evan Barnet, our Reunion Committee Chairman, Dave Scheu moderated the panel discussion and Q&A, including an opportunity for classmates to communicate job leads. Some were even coming to start their own business. The panel provided insightful and articulate thoughts of the job search. The panel consisted of alumni: Tom Collela, USNA 78, Executive Recruiter for Walmart Joe Wallis, USNA 86, Military Recruiting Manager, Microsoft Chris Cantarella, USNA 89, Executive Recruiter, Korn-Ferry Phil Dana, USNA 98, Military Recruiting Manager, Amazon The message from the panel was clear: narrow your focus on what you really want to do, do your homeworkjust like we did for come arounds, and most importantly reach out to classmates for ideas and encouragement. Amazon for example indicated that they had hired over 114 Academy grads in the last 14 months. The leadership skills that Academy grads bring to organizations are in high demand. The gap the evening was looking to fill was putting graduates in touch with those in need of work. The evening carried on with open networking and direct conversations with the panelists, each of which reported making several promising connections with our classmates. Many thanks to those who helped us produce the event and to everyone who

joined us. Everyone on the committee work tirelessly put this together. We had a couple 92ers in the house. They so enjoyed the idea that they are adding it to their program plan for their 20th next year. If you are one of the promising leads, please keep us posted on how it goes. Thanks Dave and Evan for your leadership on getting this event going and for making it happen! Some made our way through the gargantuan Mid Store and spent lots of cash. Others waited patiently to view the Noon Meal Formation. While many of us were sleeping off the purple haze from the night before, the 91 Navy Crew studs were up early Friday morning enjoying some time on the Severn, cutting nice straight lines. Thanks to Stu Lockhart for sending these great photos from the Reunion Row (see more photos on the 91 Facebook page). Throughout the weekend, 91ers gathered in hotel rooms, downtown bars, and rented homes to catch up on the past twenty years. Wine and beer revenues in the Annapolis area were up 91% (source: Red Corvette Analytics Inc.). Reminder to all to post their favorite Reunion photos to the 91 Facebook page or at USNA91.info.

Last and certainly not least, I wanted to commend, on behalf of all of us, Brian Spano for organizing the Memorial Service. Rich Brophy opened the wellattended service with some very moving and appropriate remarks as the President of our fine Class. Chad Jungbluth followed with a reading. Then our classmates, Pastor David Ochoa, Rev. Jared McCambridge, and Rev. Ramon Baez each provided with words of faith and wisdom and moving perspectives on how we deal with loss and how we honor our fallen Comrades. Thank you Brian, Rich, Chad, David, Jared and Ramon for your leadership. I cant think of a more fitting and honorable way to celebrate, sanctify, and keep alive the memories of our 24 brothers who have gone before us. Finally, a huge thanks to EVERYONE that came together to make our 20th Reunion a stunning success. For those of you who could not make it, 25 will be here before you know it...pencil it in now! Right now there are 236+ members! (Thanks Steve for putting this together and keeping it going!) Ive received no correspondence this month, so below is some info I gleaned from our page: NPR recently ran a story on Jason Morris and his Battalion in Afghanistan, the link is http://www.npr.org/2011 /10/30/141723895/afghan-successcomes-at-high-price-for-commander Ive included one of their pictures and below is a portion of the article: It was just over a year ago that Morris took nearly 1,000 Marines to a place in Helmand called Sangin. It was a haven for Taliban fighters and drug traffickers, a place where the British lost more than 100 troops in four years. But the British failed to push out and pursue the enemy, and the Taliban continued to control much of the area. It was Morris job to take it back. At the time, Lt. Gen. Rich Mills was the senior Marine commander in Helmand. He says what Morris unit went through was as brutal as anything in the history of the Marines. It stands alone in the Afghanistan situation as probably being one of the tougher missions ever handed to an infantry battalion, Mills says. Its very rare. I certainly would compare it to some of the amphibious assaults during World War II, places like Guadalcanal, he adds. Please check out the rest of the article.

The Milwaukie Wisconsin Journal Sentinel ran a story on Fred Schenk, the link is http://www.jsonline.com/news/ ozwash/cedarburg-native-testing-militarys-latest-fighter-jet-132897828.html. Ive included one of their pictures, and below is a portion of the article: The Marine test pilot and Cedarburg native [LtCol Schenk] performed the first at-sea vertical landing of the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter this month, hovering next to the USS Wasp in the Atlantic Ocean before setting down neatly on the deck. When the F-35 eventually replaces the jets now soaring over war zones, it will be test pilots like Schenk who played an integral role in development of the joint strike fighter. Its a one in a lifetime opportunity to be involved in an aircraft that started on a piece of paper and is now flying and doing really well, said Schenk, 41, a 1988 Cedarburg High School graduate. Schenk has spent many hours in the F-35B cockpit and had test flown it on land, but the next step required taking off and landing on a ship as well as testing how the aircraft interacts with a ships landing systems, deck and hangar. The first landing on Oct. 3 was done during nice weather and sea conditions - not much crosswinds and a steady deck with less than 1 degree pitch and 5 degrees of roll. Over the next few weeks Schenk flew in increasingly less favorable conditions from the USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship, because ultimately pilots will be taking off and landing in all kinds of weather and seas. Please check out the rest of the article!

Lastly, Martha Dunne recently published her first Novel titled An End to the Means under a pseudonym. The press release states, JC Leland is the pseudonym for Martha Dunne, a 1992 graduate of the US Naval Academy and a former helicopter pilot with an extensive background in naval special operations. An End to the Means is her first novel. Congratulations Martha!! If its been years since you sent anything for shipmateplease send me an update!! Thanks, Doug.

This past fall brought the annual Marine Corps Marathon and the traditional Run to Honor event driven by dedicated classmates as well. The turnout for the dinner was great and the event warmed up the weekend as the DC area fell under a cold front where the temps ranged between the low 30s and high 40s for a late October Sunday morning marathon run. Ed Galloway flew in from Seattle for the event and proudly wore his Run to Honor gear along with Gio Kostrubala Meek (congrats again on the wedding) and Jeff Webb. The pictures provided captured the dinner as well as marathon and were taken by photographers from Mathy. Awesome job to all who contributed to this outstanding event and we all look forward to many more years of Run to Honor; dedicating those who served and who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Our kids are 14 months apart so things are pretty chaotic. Im currently assigned to Joint Staff J-5, and since moving to DC, Ive been happy to run into many classmates. After a career in Washington and Japan, its nice to be in such a central location and close to USNA too. For Cheryl and me, this is a great assignment because her family is nearby: her sisters husband is an Army LTC on Army Staff, and her brother is another Army LTC at Fort Meade, MD. Classmates, I am reluctant to begin this column with bad news, but its important to give this the attention it deserves. Here is an email from Herb Lacy who informed us about the loss of one of our classmates over the Thanksgiving holiday. Damola Joseph DJ Itobi (7th company) lost his life in a fatal accident that occurred Wednesday, November 23, 2011 near the Virginia-West Virginia line. He was on his way to a Thanksgiving office party. While he was traveling on Harpers Ferry Road just south of Route 340 around 11:15 a.m., a tree fell onto his car. He succumbed to his injuries at INOVA Fairfax Hospital on Thursday, November 24, 2011. DJ was from Lagos, Nigeria, and came to us as an exchange student from the Nigerian Defense Academy. He met his wife Sarah Nemetz (New Hampshire) over the computer youngster year while using an archaic social network ISBA/BBS on NADN. After graduation, he decided not to return to Nigeria and elected to stay in the DC area and work for Corporate America. He worked for Technica Corp of Dulles,VA, and served as a contractor in the Greater DC Metropolitan area (most recently at Fort Meade, MD). He and Sarah were married the day after graduation and had three

So this evening, while trying to herd the three cats that are my beloved children around the house, through homework, dinner, cleaning up, and so on, I looked at the calendar and realized that I had failed to put together a meaningful, funny, and above all loooooong Shipmate update. And while I promised during the last update that a guest writer would honor us with his (or her?) thoughts for this issue, and Im sure many of you are waiting with bated breath for his/her appearance, said guest writer is mysteriously busy, so I am sitting here typing furiously while staring out the window at the large, inflatable snowman and Santa that I just put up. But I digress. Not a whole lot of updates this time around (LOREN REINKE, this means you! This is me annoying you as promised. And you too, LAURA TUCK MAASDAM). So I get to ramble a bit. Lucky you all. Rambling first, update second. First of all, I ran the Marine Corps Marathon last month. On a nice, balmy 30-degree Sunday morning. I will proudly add that I ran it in 3:59:14, which is waaaaaaaay off of my PR but I honestly know I could not have gotten to that finish line any faster. Of course, for those of you who know my husband Chris Haynie, he ran the MCM in 3:11. And he was disappointed, he really bonked pretty badly3:11 being such a shabby time and all. After stumbling across the finish line, I was trying (unsuccessfully) to make it to the link-up area, where Chris had my sweatshirt, when I saw Mike McPhail.

He was waiting for his wife, who had run the MCM also. He hadnt seen her yet, so I cant report on how she did, but Mike looked proud of her and unfortunately I dont remember much else about it, because I was pretty out of it. Im heading into work tomorrow for my USMC Reserve job at the Pentagon, and just found out that Ill be working alongside a new active duty counterpart. It was CDR Joe Torian 96 before, but Steve Minihane just took his place. So Im going to bring this to work in the morning and hopefully add a Steve update. Or maybe just annoy the hell out of him until I get one. (Update: Steve doesnt want to give me any news for this issue, so I am just going to annoy the hell out of him) And because I havent called her out in two months or so, Jenn Marino, signup for the 2012 MCM for military members starts in a few short months. Two short(ish) updates: Rebecca (Chany) Baas and David Baas just had baby #4 on November 19. Peter Henry Baas arrived verrrry early on the 19th, weighing in at 9 pounds, 2 ounces. Peter joins big sister Caroline (6) and brothers James (4) and Luke (2). Becca is a total pro at this, but I dont think shell be sending a ton of updates for a bitso Ill get her permission to add some pictures, and will hopefully include them in the next submission. And the second update, from Anne (Cossitt) Leanos: This is Anne (Cossitt) Leanos 98. I could not bear the thought of a photo from my plebe year being in the public domain; so here are some recent ones of my family: Alex Leanos (USNA 99) who many of the math majoring 98ers know since he is sort of a math whiz...hes humble and would never describe himself that way, but I can; and our 12 y/o son Christopher; who over the past 2 summers has enjoyed swimming, baseball and wrestling camps at USNA. Alex and I are both SELRES and BGOs, hes an EDO and a mechanical engineer at Caterpillar, Inc; on a Mountain Biking team sponsored by Goose Island 312 & on AT right now spending his weekend doing a 160 mile bike ride to Raise $ for EOD Wounded Warriors. We live near Peoria, IL, I am a PAO & will be heading up Navy Week Chicago this summer, one of about 20 different 1812 commemorations the Navy is celebrating all over the country. of 100+ consultants, and drive a Pink Cadillac SRX. Good luck to you Dave if you run the USMC marathon, I ran the Nike womens marathon in San Francisco, and I now consider that box fully & completely checked:) Best, Anne The two attached pictures are from Anne: with her husband and son Christopher, and with her pink Cadillac. Anne, thanks for the update, and congratulations on the success and your family

And thats all I have. I think this issue comes out in January, so I hope everyone had a great holiday season, and hopefully Navy beat Army. I think well miss most of the game unfortunately, since my oldest is going to be an angel (a non-speaking one) in the Nativity Play that day. Im signing off now, because its Monday Night Football and my Saints are playing the Giants. I hope to see plenty of Manning face over the next four hours. (Update: I did. Great game, Saints won 49-24. It was divine.) Breaking out the wretched plebe year pictures next time around, unless I have some good stuff. And I wont stop at only plebe year ones, although I wont post any from the Ring Dance booze cruise. I may want to run for public office someday. Take care, Jeannette

Hey there, 99! Happy 2012!! Only TWO more years until our 15-year reunion! Weve already started the planning phase; if youd like to help with the reunion, please send an email to Barre Adams-Simmons at Adams_simmons@ yahoo.com. Itll be here before you know it! Please help out if you can. Hope everyone had a happy and restful holiday season. No submissions for the 99 column, so I had to go and scavenge for information myself. HUGE congratulations to Chris Tyson, who married the lovely Jill Tyson, ne Wade, over the Thanksgiving holiday in Tuscany, Italy. I had the great fortune to make the trip over to Italy to share in the experience. Months of planning, a beautiful Medieval castle, perfect fall Tuscan weather all came together for a lovely, moving wedding.Wish them many years of love and happiness.While in Italy, I managed to meet up with one or two folks. Deacon Andy Young took some time out of his hectic seminary studies to share a dinner in Rome with me and Josh Greenberg, U-M 98. Andy is in his fifth year of studies to become a priest and will be ordained in his home parish of Sioux Falls, SD, this coming June. Caroline Rodi 98 braved the Italian train system to meet us in Florence. Caroline is in the midst of a two-year graduate program at the University of Milan. Studying what, though, I couldnt even begin to tell you; possibly mastering the art of drinking espresso and speaking with hand gestures. Hope youre having a favolosa avventura, Rodi! Caroline and Andy mentioned that they have run into Todd Sanders and his lovely wife, Maura Duggan Sanders 00 in Naples, Italy. Todd, Maura and their two little munchkins are living la bella vita in Naples, courtesy of the Marine Corps. Sounds like a fantastic boondoggle! Thats it for the boat school shippie run-ins while abroad; the world is small, but not THAT small. I was, unfortunately, part of the major debacle that was the Hot Chocolate 15k at the National Harbor this past December.Waiting in freezing temps for the race to start an hour and a half late; dodging major traffic;

running with 20,000 of my closest friends; and ingesting a small portion of the tons of chocolate fondue that had been sitting out all morning was made all the more worthwhile because I was sharing the experience (i.e. pain) with my lovely 15k survivors Shana Gritsavage 97, Doc Jo, Kirsten Walden, Josh Greenberg, and Katie Traster 08. Congratulations, Shana, on finally showing up in Shipmate for the first time since graduation!!!! Oh, and on finishing the 15k as well. Patrick and Courtney OMahoney also survived the 15k, but I have no photographic evidence as they were much faster than me and my camera. Thats it for this issue. Hope you can help out with the 15-year reunion!!

Shippies, As a sign of a troubled economy the alumni association some time ago scaled back the issues of Shipmate. This went over like a blankety blank in a blank (pick your favorite analogy where something does not go well) with a majority of alumni, and the Shipmate Ship has since been steered back to its proper course. We are now rolling out color pictures in the class columns. You need not be Warren Buffet to figure out that this is a good sign for the economy as well as the human race. I was short on submissions this month so deal with my trivia. I am going to post some clues here and then the answer will be at the bottom. I shall call this game Name that Classmate. Take a stab at who the classmate is 1.That used to, as Midshipman, (and still might) set his alarm to wake up in the middle of the night to watch reruns of Magnum P.I. 2.That once refused to leave the kitchen of a restaurant until a dishwasher would relinquish as part of a trade his Miami Vice T-shirt. 3.That had a bust of Ronald Reagan on his desk in Bancroft. 4.That had a radio show on WNAV he cohosted with another classmate that played only eighties music. 5. Now works for NASA. Thats all you get. Now if you are reading these clues and some alarming/awkward/bizarre/not plausible habits of a classmate are jumping into your

skull and making you giggle, then you need to email me those. The format should look something like the above. In other news, being back at the Naval Academy is awesome. If I would have had to come up with one word on describing a room full of Plebes this past summer, it would have been smelly. Now that they have figured out which way is up and yet are still the most curious creatures in captivity I would use the word motivational. Our class was well represented at 6th Companys Giving Tree Ceremony and one of the highlights of said ceremony was Erik Herrmanns mustache. Earlier in the fall the 3rd Annual Ripley Race was reunion of many and I spent most of the 5k race learning stroller running tips from Austin Yoder and his lovely wife. Enjoy the Giving Tree Ceremony photo and the Hero Walk photo from a few years back. Send me stuff! Murph Trivia question answer: Stuart Usry

After our visit with the Cox family we flew out to San Diego, after driving up to Disneyland, we stopped in at Crossfit Ethos (Laguna Hills), which is owned and operated by Jimi Lechford (03). Unfortunately the Lechford family was not around, but their gym is incredible and anyone in Orange County, CA interested in Crossfit should go see Jimi. The culminating event of our vacation was the wedding of Brian BJ Reitter, and Gianni DeMichele, both 2003 graduates. BJ and Gianni got married at the Prado in San Diego and there were a host of USNA classmates in attendance (Lauren Pizzi, Anne Huber (Gates), Kristin Hart, Dan Bailey, Jim Vandevoort, Matt Preston, Mike Marks). On a weekend when the Phillies got knocked out of the playoffs, the Eagles bit the dust, Brian Stann (03) lost a tough fight, and Navy got beat up on the Grid-Iron...this reunion at such a beautiful wedding ensured that our family vacation ended on a high note.We arrived back in Philly on Sunday, October 9th, and Im set to begin my civilian career here in the City of Brotherly Love. Any shipmates who find themselves in Philly, look me up...but dont expect me to take you to any sporting events!

Classmates, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season, wherever you may have been celebrating. As we ring in 2012 who can believe that it has been nearly five years since we tossed our Mid covers in the air and went our separate ways to serve this great nation? Although the column has been quiet most of that time, we realize your stories (and photos) are out there from weddings to port calls, deployments to schools, Afghanistan to the Med, our classmates have come together all around the world. Below is a note from Gray Tompson, written while aboard the USS George W. Bush. Also, Classmate James Mahan submitted a photo of he and his new bride, Michelle (Aleszycyk) Mahan, taken at their post-I do party on July 9, 2011 in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. We would all love to hear more, so please send your latest news at classofficersUSNA2007@gmail.com. Also stay posted for further details on our fiveyear reunion coming up this Fall. Well be getting the word out soon! Semper Fi, Julie Naughton, Class Secretary Aught Seven, From Marseille, France onboard USS GEORGE H W BUSH, a privileged few of your classmates wish you a belated Happy Holidays. Well soon pull back into Norfolk following our good ships maiden deployment. For those who read about it back on the beach, this cruise may have won renown for its dire plumbing problemseriously it made NY Times. However what I will remember is the four different Sixth Fleet portcalls, my friends flying their first combat missions in country, a $10,000 Bahrain Wetting Down (thanks again Ash), a swimcall in the Indian Ocean, the BILLS dominating AFNs coverage of the NFL season, and the CO making it rain during Big Bucks Bingo on SITE TV.
