Australian Product Comparison Volvo EC210CL Vs Komatsu PC200-8

The following presentation covers observations and conclusions by all at the training comparing the performance, build and quality of the Komatsu PC200-8 compared to the New Volvo EC210CL at the training days for C series excavators conducted in Perth on Tuesday 19/6/2007 and Wednesday 20/6/2007. A side by side product evaluation was conducted between the New Volvo EC210CL vs a 200 hours old Komatsu PC200-8, our opinions and comments suggest that Volvo has produced an excellent product with the New C series and we have a product which is equal too if not better than any of our competitors have to offer to the market place.

Summary of an operation test between PC200-8 Vs EC210LC. The Komatsu has two (2) operation modes Power mode and Economy mode. In Power mode: The machine does not impress at all, especially with operation with boom and swing at the same time, the swing has priority over the boom, resulting in a very slow boom lift in a 90 degree cycle. In Economy mode: In this mode the machine is very slow and we can not see what application this mode is applicable for. We did not notice any different with the rpm but the speed of the hydraulic system was significant slower. (In practice this mode will never be used by an operator)

Operation of Bucket in and Boom Lift at the same time, resulting in a one (1) to two (2) second delay on the Boom Lift movement. The control levers have very long stroke, after a short time of operation you start to feel tired and irritated over the long lever stroke compared to the Volvo control levers. The cab doesn't feel and look to be of the latest design and seems old when compared to the New Volvo Cabin. Swing torque uphill is not as good as the Volvo EC210CL

OBSERVATIONS & CONCLUSIONS

The hydraulic speed and feel of the PC200-8 is not impressive and Volvo EC210CL is a far smoother and more controllable machine to operate and would be more productive at the end of the working day. The PC200-8 operation feel is satisfactory but this is due to the long lever stroke but can become tiresome for the operator compared to the smoother EC210CL control levers and Volvos ergonomics. It was difficult to do a comparison with digging force because of the different buckets sizes between the Volvo and Komatsu it also was equipped with hydraulic quick coupler.

OBSERVATIONS & CONCLUSIONS (continued)

The shorter undercarriage is Komatsus PC200-8s biggest disadvantage compared to the Volvo EC210CL, the Komatsu PC200-8 is continually rocking & rolling and this will become very tiresome for the operator. The shorter undercarriage also has another negative impact on the lifting force and the stability across undercarriage which was evident with the Komatsu PC200-8 on loan as it was over bucketed and this machine was very unstable in all operations.

CABIN ENTRY Komatsu PC200-8 is 1420 mm from ground to cabin floor, hard to enter, no left hand side grab rail to give a 3 points of contact on entry into cabin, the factory side impact protection made entry into the cabin dangerous as there was no slip protection material at cabin entry point Volvo EC210CL is 1320 mm from ground to cabin floor, grab rails on each side to give 3 points of contact for entry into the cabin and the cabin door can be closed from a seating position

CABIN FORWARD VIEW Komatsu has a thick centre beam on the front window with a hard to use window opening system and the view is obscured by the instrument LCD display panel which is very wide. Volvo with the New C cabin has an uninterrupted view and an easy to open front window with cable and gas strut supports to assist opening

CONTROL LEVERS Komatsu PC200-8 has a longer control lever than the Volvo EC210CL and also has great wrist movement which can become tiresome for the operator when compared to the Volvo EC210CL control levers design.

CABIN FLOOR ROOM & FOOT CONTROL LAYOUT Komatsu PC200-8 has a smaller cabin in floor space and only has one left hand foot rest made out of steel with no covering to stop slip off. Volvo EC210CL has a larger floor area two foot rests which are very important for the operator when working on side slopes and Volvo has a more ergonomic layout of foot controls

MACHINE DISPLAY CONSULS Komatsu PC200-8 has a large colour display but because all the control buttons are part of the display the consul is large and obstructs forward view, the information is very busy and the system is not very user friendly. Volvo EC210CL display is all screen and is base on a windows style menu and is very easy to navigate, the narrow design gives a better unobstructed view for the operator looking forward

CABIN STORAGE & AIR VENTILAZTION Komatsu PC200-8 has a good area behind the seat for storage but only one power outlet for the cabin and only ten (10) air flow outlets with no roof outlets, this will give poor mixture of air circulation for cooling Volvo EC210CL has an equally good area for storage behind the seat but with three power outlets and fourteen (14) air flow outlets spread around the cabin from roof to floor for optimal air circulation better cooling

COOLING PACKAGE & COOLING FAN TECHNOLOGY Komatsu PC200-8 has a modern single pass side by side cooling packs but looks to be very difficult to clean and they also still uses old technology with a engine driven cooling fan with less cooling efficiency than the Volvo EC210CL Volvo EC210CL also has a modern single pass stacked cooling system which is very easy to clean and has a hydraulic driven cooling fan technology in the same style as other Volvo products giving fuel savings and improved cooling efficiency over the Komatsu PC200-8

REMOTE FILTER LOCATIONS Komatsu PC200-8 has placed their filters in three (3) different locations, (1) behind cabin (Engine oil, Coolant filter) (2) inside pump room (Water separator, Hydraulic pump case drain, Servo system filter) and (3) one filter under the engine bonnet (Fuel filter), the locations seem to not have much thought of placement and there is a gear box to drive the hydraulic pump as well which is another item to service that Volvo EC210CL does not have Volvo EC210CL has located all (5) five filters (Engine oil, Water separator, Fuel Filter, Hydraulic pump case drain, Servo system filter) in the pump room and have logically placed them for easy servicing of all filters and the hydraulic pump.

UNDER BONNET ACCESS & REAR VIEW FROM CABIN Komatsu PC200-8 has a heavy single bonnet door which you must open fully to check the engine and the bonnet is about 400 mm high restricting rear vision from the cabin. Volvo EC210CL has a smaller bonnet door which is easy to open and the bonnet is only at 140 mm high giving excellent rear vision from the cabin to the rear of the machine The bonnet gives access to oil dip stick and filler point and radiator header tank with Volvo VCS Coolant which has a 4 years/6,000 hours service life

SAFETY ACCESS WALK WAYS Komatsu PC200-8 has gone for the cheaper option of sand paper and welded dimples but not placed together, in muddy conditions this machine would be unsafe. Volvo EC210CL has gone for greater safety with high quality punched removable plates with excellent grip and also directs the operator to walk on the safe areas only.

BATTERY BOX & ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS Komatsu PC200-8 runs a very untidy electrical system with very little protection with no dust or water proofing, batteries are not protected by any cover Volvo EC210CL has a well protected neat electrical system, the battery has a cover and all electrical cables are sheathed for dust and water protection

DISTANCE FROM BASE PLATE TO GROUND

Komatsu PC200-8 has a greater distance from the ground to the base plate @ 1180 mm, this will make the machine less stable due to higher center of gravity. Volvo EC210CL is closer to the ground @ 1090 mm and has a lower center of gravity but still has 460 mm ground clearance compared to Komatsu PC200-8 440 mm ground clearance. Volvo has 20 mm more ground clearance.
