If I were a butterfly Cosmetic surgery is in the news as I write this, especially faulty breast implants. For women who have had to endure a mastectomy these prosthetics are a god-send but an astonishing number of healthy women have had implants to improve their looks. For both men and women Revd. Bob Politt cosmetic surgery is big business today and can take many forms: hair implants, liposuction, tucks etc. In 1939 Sir Archibald McIndoe pioneered plastic surgery at Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, rebuilding the burned and broken faces and self-esteem of seriously injured RAF aircrew. Today, surgery has progressed beyond all imagination and its now possible to customise your own body, if you have the money. Long ago, in the days of wireless and toilet chains, the days of my childhood, girls wore pig-tails, frocks, ankle socks and buckled shoes, and boys wore caps, blazers (if you could afford one) short trousers and long socks. In contrast, many children today are dressed like fashion models and pop stars. It seems that image has become a powerful idol for both adults and the very young. We all welcome the better standard of living we enjoy today, good hygiene, clean clothes and good food but have we become the unwary victims of big business and fashion gurus, manipulated to feel dissatisfied with who we are and what we look like? I remember a girl saying to me: Im glad Im not beautiful because at least I stand a chance of finding a boyfriend who will love me for who I am and not for what I look like. A profound thought. There is a song, once popular in schools and churches, which goes like this: If I were a butterfly Id thank you Lord for giving me wings, and if I were a robin in a tree, Id thank you Lord that I could sing, and if I were a fuzzy-wuzzy bear Id thank you Lord for my fuzzy-wuzzy hair but I just thank you Lord for making me, me. Where is real beauty to be found? Isnt it what a person is on the inside, rather than what they look like on the outside? Its no accident that the Bible tells us God looks upon the heart. Whatever you think of yourself, He made you, He loves you and accepts you, warts and all. Christian greetings,

EDITORIAL
Welcome to the February edition of the Loddon Valley Link. Hopefully youre all getting over Christmas and New Year and sticking to those resolutions. Mine was to get a bit fitter. Over the last month Ive been on a couple of lovely walks in the area. We had Stratfield Turgis on boxing day and Sherfield on new years day. Both lovely opportunities to see the beautiful countryside surrounding us. If you get chance I can recommend joining the friendly people on the walks in the future. Stratfield Turgis have been busy and produced a mapboard, which is featured on the cover, to help residents and visitors see their surroundings in a new light. The board itself is due for installation next month on the recreation ground and well include more details in the Link then. Residents reviewed the original artwork at the annual village social in the Jekyll and Hyde on the 23rd January. See www.stratfieldturgis.org.uk. Its Jubilee year and all the local villages have events planned. Sherfield is on p22, a combined Stratfield Turgis and Hartley Wespall below and Stratfield Saye on p22 too. Were still looking for a new editor for the link so please get in touch if you fancy giving it a go. As ever, comments, criticism and especially compliments to
editor@loddonvalleylink.hampshire.org.uk.

Clement Edward Keeble 30.12.191923.11.2011

Clem was involved in horses before the war and when he enlisted he tried to join the Veterinary Corps. But instead he was told he had been selected to join the Parachute Regiment. After intensive training, D-Day 1944 loomed. Clem took off from the south west and linked up with an armada of planes heading for France late in the evening of the 5th June (D-day1, D for deliverance). They jumped into enemy territory to take what was to become known as Pegasus Bridge. Clem was wounded twice but returned on the final assault, jumping over the Rhine. Clem came to Sherfield to become caretaker of the village hall. Sadly his son John died at the age of 40. He became Church Warden and a bell ringer and at the age of 80+ he did another parachute jump for charity, but this time strapped to an instructor! Whilst sitting with him and listening on my visits I felt like the painting that used to hang behind the stage in the village hall in the 30s. The Boyhood Days of Raleigh. Old Soldiers Never Die. FAREWELL CLEM. John Dodd

PRAYER

From the Bible an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus, teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? What is written in the law?, Jesus replied. How do you read it? He answered, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and love your neighbour as yourself. You have answered correctly, Jesus replied. Do this and you will live. And who is my neighbour? St. Lukes Gospel chapter 10 Comment its such a familiar story. The Good Samaritan. The man who stopped, offered First Aid, lost time on his journey, went out of his way to stop at the inn, paid the bill, returned to check on the patient, made sure that further bills came to him all for a complete stranger! Prayer To be Christ to others May I see Christ in others, and be Christ to others, The person collecting for charity, when I dont want to stop. May I see Christ in others, and be Christ to others, The needy phone call when Im rushing in my lunch break. May I see Christ in others, and be Christ to others, The old person wanting to tell me their story for the umpteenth time. May I see Christ in others, and be Christ to others. Lord, give me grace to see you in others and to show your love to others. By our loving and our giving may we shed your love abroad. Make us faithful in our living, that your name might be adored. Amen.

Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council

Council Tax 2012/2013 The parish council has now fixed its level of precept for the coming financial year this is the amount that is levied on parishioners to enable the parish council to provide its services and there will be no change from the previous year. However, due to an increase in the number of properties in the parish, there will be a slight change to the amount levied on households. The charge for a Band D property will be approximately 39.95 per annum, down from 44.08 per annum in the current year. The increases for the other bands will vary and these can be provided upon request. The charge will be included in your overall council tax bill which will also give a breakdown of the amounts charged by the various authorities. Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Preparations are well under way for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations (please see the advert elsewhere in this magazine) and it promises to be a fun two days for all the family. The parish council will be providing a commemorative gift for every child in the parish as a keepsake to remind them of the historic significance in years to come. Hedgerow Harvest Sincere thanks to our Tree Warden, Jane Jordan, for organising the planting and mulching of our new fruiting hedge and twenty trees over two weekends. We really are indebted to the numerous villagers who turned out to plant all the hedging and trees. It was a really great effort, for which the Parish Council is most grateful. A special thank you also to our three contractors, Barry Bulpitt, Peter Elliott and Mark Stewart, who gave their time and the use of their equipment and materials, as well as their expertise The next Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 8 February at 7.30pm in the Liddell Hall all welcome! Cats Protections Basingstoke and District Branch is starting to feel the pinch
The slowdown in the UK economy and recession is now having an impact on its day to day running and it has been forced to increase its annual membership from 6 to 10 per year and the cost to adopt a cat has risen from 50 to 60 . According to Hilary Wells, Branch Coordinator, they are feeling the pinch in two main areas. As well as a drop in donations , the branch is also finding that cats are taking much longer to be re-homed. For more information on giving a Cats Protection cat a home please email the branch at: adoptacat-basingstoke@hotmail.co.uk, or to make a donation to help the charity continue its vital cat welfare work in the area, please call the branch on 01256 352281. More information about the branch can be found at www.basingstoke.cats.org.uk.

A loop system is a device that works together with hearing aids to help hard of hearing people hear better. We will keep you posted on progress with our application. THE WOMENS INSTITUTE

Reported by Ilene Iles Dee Bulpitt, our President, opened our December Meeting and welcomed everyone, with special mention to our visitors from other local W.Is and Hampshire Federation. Jerusalem was sung and our usual Business Meeting took place. Evelyn Holdaway, our Treasurer, reminded us that our subscriptions have increased slightly and are due at the January Meeting. Dee thanked Helen Rolton and her helpers for the beautiful table decorations and Marlene and her helpers for all the hard work creating our very lovely interpretation of Beatrix Potter Stories for the Christmas Tree Festival. The Business Meeting closed at 2.30 p.m. Entertainment with a Christmas Theme with Vera Hughes and David Weller followed. They gave us Yuletide Tales, including Dickens, poems and facts about Christmas past and present from around the world. Val Denny gave the vote of thanks and then we enjoyed a wonderful spread. The Raffle was drawn, a collection taken for St Michaels Hospice and Dee thanked everyone for coming and wished them a Very Merry Christmas. Our January Meeting began at 12 noon and was taken by Tess Morris as, both our President (Dee) and our Vice President (Christine Skillett), were unwell. The Business Meeting began with the singing of Jerusalem, Minutes of the previous Meeting were read, correspondence dealt with, the Treasurers Report given and Helen gave out details of the Annual Lunch at BCOT on the 8th February 2012. Val said she proposed that our spring trip in April would, perhaps, be to Alton and Selborne. On a show of hands this was unanimously approved. Other matters were discussed and the Business Meeting closed at 1.15 p.m. Those present were then able to visit our Bring and Buy Table and the Handbags Table before the Committee served a choice of 4 homemade soups, a choice of sandwiches, two delicious sweets made by Tess Morris and followed by tea or coffee and Christmas cake. The Raffle was drawn, the afternoon came to an end at approximately 3.30 p.m. and everyone was able to go home while it was still light. NEXT MEETING: WEDNESDAY, 8TH FEBRUARY 2012 LUNCH AT BCOT AT 12 NOON - FOLLOWED BY A MEETING IN SHERFIELD VILLAGE HALL AT APPROXIMATELY 2.30 P.M.

Report by Gill Fearon The first meeting of the year was a post New Year social evening which started with mulled wine and nibbles. Our topic was Loves and Hates and we had to choose five of each. Some peoples loves were others hates, but on the whole we were mostly in agreement. On the love list a large number of us chose being outdoors walking by the coast, lakes and mountains, picnics, bright sunny days, warm evenings, walking on the sand with bare feet, sunsets and sunrises. Theatre was mentioned, both professional and amateur, unaccompanied singing, rock music (also a hate!), Art Deco, holidays, gardening and the start of Wimbledon. On the food/drink front were champagne, wine, coffee, bacon frying, Hellmans mayonnaise, butter, toast with marmalade, chocolate (of course!) and clotted cream. Fresh snow got a mention, as did log fires and hot showers. Silk pillows were chosen by two of us and seemed to guarantee a good nights sleep! Of course our loves could not be complete without friends and animals. Apart from our families, who we would assume would be on our love list, we love our dogs, cats and horses even the smell! On the hate list were slugs and snails, but not puppy dogs tails, although there were earwigs, wasps and snakes! Sugar and spice did not get a mention, but curry did! There were the usual hates of automated telephone systems and the accompanying music, cold calling and faults being blamed on the computer. Bad grammar was attacked (in particular the use of the ubiquitous apostrophe!), as was the deliberate misspelling of words, eg. nite, lite. Transport seemed to cause some problems - people putting bags on seats of busy trains, reclining aircraft seats without concern for the person behind and people talking loudly on their mobile phones on trains. As Bob Geldof famously sang in the late 70s, I Dont Like Mondays, one member felt the same. Toilets seemed to feature quite a bit toilet roll dispensers which are miserly with the dispensing of sheets of paper and which often get stuck, automatic flushes which flush too soon and squat loos! Then there were sticky labels, glitter, rude shop assistants and chairmen being called chair. Lastly, tissues in the wash your heart sinks when you realise you didnt empty all the pockets! It was a lively fun evening which produced much discussion. The planning meeting followed the next week and details of the 2012 programme will be available soon. Please call me on 882106 if you are interested in coming along to some meetings, with no obligation.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

We continue with our packed schedule of talks in February. Anyone interested in gardening will be most welcome to join us at the Sherfield Village Hall at 7:30pm On Monday 20th February we will be joined by Paulo Arrigo who will tell us all about The Seeds of Italy. Paolo has spoken at many shows including RHS Hampton Court, Country BBC Gardeners' World Live and many more. Paolo wrote his first book 'From Seed to Plate' in 2009 which combines his knowledge and passion for Italian food and ingredients using his experience from having grown up in the family deli in London. On Monday 19th March Victoria Ennion will talk about Foliage in Design. Victoria is a garden designer, expert gardener and lecturer. She trained in horticulture and garden design at Capel Manor College, and has been running her own gardening business since 1998. She worked in the West London area, creating small urban oases as well as working longer term in large NGS gardens. In 2004 she started working at Capel Manor College, teaching horticulture and garden design to adults. In 2009 she left London and moved to Winchester where she set up Crowsfoot Gardens, which specialises in garden design and restoration. For arrangements contact: Linda on 882341 or Vanessa on 881760

SOLVE (Save Our Loddon Valley Environment)

SOLVE is a non-political group of local residents (Over 2000 signed our petitions in 2010) who believe our unique eco-systems and historic sites of national significance are as important as our economic aspirations and should be protected for the continued enjoyment of all of Basingstokes communities. SOLVE along with CountryWatch share the aim to protect the Loddon Valley and surrounding countryside. Working together we are preparing for a Judicial Review in order to expose the Councils unlawful actions regarding the Manydown land to the west of the Borough. By excluding 2,000 acres of land in the west (Manydown), originally bought for development with taxpayers money, most new housing will be in the following parishes; Old Basing & Lychpit, Chineham, Sherfield-on-Loddon, Newnham, Mapledurwell & Up Nately and Bramley. Lead by Borough Councillors from the west, most Conservative Councillors in the east follow their party line, with apparent disregard to the consequences for their own wards. Land around Sherfield-onLoddon (Redlands, Razors Farm, Cufaude Farm and Pyotts Hill) are in line for development. Ultimately massive housing estates will litter the Loddon Valley and surrounding areas. All the problems associated with over development, e.g. a grid locked A33, would come to Sherfield-on-Loddon. For much more information visit our website, including how to donate to our cause, www.solveloddon.org, follow us on Twitter: @SOLVE2010. Telephone contact Kate Tuck - 01256 324043.

Did the Butler do it? The clues were there. Review of the Loddon Players latest performance in November. "Bumped Off" by John McDermott, a Murder Mystery Evening.
While the village hall may not conjure up images of the country house, Loddon Players did a wonderful job of suspending reality in delivering their latest work. The hall was set out with circular tables encouraging interaction with our fellow detectives and discussion of the case . The scene was set as Lady Phyllis demonstrated her control over her house, staff and husband , Sir Rodney Gung Ho. He was ably supported by his batman / butler, Stanley Binge, a man fond of a tipple. The house guests arrived almost as swiftly as the clues and red herrings. These included Oliver Smooche, a local bookmaker, who quickly made his mark as the person everyone wanted to do away with. Naturally he didnt make it to the interval. The break provided the opportunity for a quiz, a light supper and a lively discussion of whodunit and more importantly why. We got the chance to write the who and the why down, with the best answers winning the prize. The actors returned to complete proceedings and all was revealed. Overall it was a very entertaining evening with some great acting played with humour and verve. As a departure from the normal play, if there is such a thing, it worked really well and I look forward to more such departures. Well done to all the cast and crew and thanks for a very entertaining evening. I recommend you book early for the next production in April. www.loddonplayersatsherfield.co.uk Simon Boase
