As he approaches 60, Hiatt
hasnt lost anounce of the
salt-and-vinegar personality
that infuses his songwriting
andhis stinging voice. He still
creates ruggedanthems about
restlessness, love, anger, prog-
ress andtraditionalism. Dirty
Jeans andMudslide Hymns
pops, thanks tocrisp, no-
nonsense productionby Kev-

Canyouhave deepinsights
intoa shallowplay?
DavidMamet looks in-
creasingly like the most over-
soldplaywright inAmerican
theatrical history. Oleannais
one of his most bogus works.
Yet Dallas Actors Labalmost
convinces youtheres some
truthinthere somewhere.
Oleannayieldeda certain
frissonwhenit came out in
1992, inthe wake of Anita
Hills charges of sexual harass-
ment against Supreme Court
nominee Clarence Thomas. In
Mamets drama, a college
professor, John, is tryingto
placateastudent whois failing,
Carol. Sheaccuses himof
improper behavior andhis life
unravels.
KyleLemieux, Patrick
Kellys successor as headof the
dramaprogramat theUni-
versityof Dallas, foundedthe
newDallas Actors Lab. Ole-
anna, its first offering, opened
at Project Xs GreenZoneon
Thursday. Lemieuxplays John,
andNatalieYoungis Carol. UD
graduateJames Mackenzie
directs.
Themost obvious problem
withOleannais that Carol
wounded, browbeatenand
clueless inthefirst scene
grows intoapoised, aggressive
ideologuemuchtooquicklyto
bebelieved. Youngis terrificin
eachmode. Its toomuchto
expect anyactor tomakethe
transitions plausible.
Johnis apedanticfool who
talks over his students head
whenhethinks hes tryingto
communicate. Lemieuxmakes
himall toobelievable. Its
possibletointerpret thechar-
acter withmoreovertones of
sexual interest inthestudent.
Herehes merelyidentifying
toostronglyandtryingtobe
helpful but stupidly.
Inthis production, though,
therearemoments ineachof
thefirst twoscenes that open
thepossibilityof real commu-
nicationbetweenthetwo
characters. Eachis interrupted
byaringingtelephone. You
keepaskingyourself what if the
teacher hadjust let thecall go
tovoicemail. Thesemoments
areworthyof abetter play.
If Oleannawerereallya
playof ideas, audiences could
empathizewithCarol much
moreeasily. Shewins theintel-
lectual debateof thefinal scene
hands down. Incontext,
though, shes just astupidpawn
of aninterest group. Sheand
Johnarebothclueless whenit
comes toreadingthemotives
of humanbeings, whether
themselves or others.
