Ideas for
New Beginnings
Ideas for the theme:
A strong testimony, rooted in these five areas, makes us steadfast and immovable. Use five points of a large star as a visual aid. Explain that in order to gain "star testimonies," we need to develop faith in each five areas. Discuss each of these five points. You could also discuss how the young womens program and personal progress is designed to strengthen our testimonies in the basic principles of the gospel. Youth Testimonies: Assign five or 6 young women to bear their testimonies on the 5 main points listed above (give them the points above). You could also ask them to talk about how personal program or the young womens program has strengthened their testimonies. Closing Song: Like the Stars (perform live or play the CD)

Narrator or Speaker #1: The mutual theme for 2008 is found in Mosiah 5:15: "Be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works. Narrator or Speaker #2: There are many types of artificial lights that man can make in this world. But they all can fade very quickly-flashlight batteries die, power lines go down, light bulbs burn out, and fire dies or are snuffed out. But the stars, were made by God, and they obey Him-shining steadfastly and strong. But what of man? God put a light in every one of us. And that light inside of any one of us, means more to God than the billions of massive stars in the sky combined. His most sacred and loved and holy creation was designed to be a holder of His light. We were designed to be like the stars. To shine-not by any power or design of man, but to shine with the power of God, steadfast and constant-a mighty light to all the world. Narrator: Straight from Holywood tonight we have the 7 most famous stars in the world with us for their world premiere private screening of the new movie Like the Stars. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Faith. (audience claps). Faith does not have a perfect knowledge of things, but she always has hope for things she cannot see that are true. Faith is very active. She knows that being tested and stretched are good for her, and she exercises daily. She knows that she would be dead if she did not work-so she is constantly moving and getting stronger. Faith just released her newest exercise video entitled, "Try Me: Exercising with Faith!" Divine Nature is of royal birth. Her Father is a king in a kingdom far away, but she communicates with Him morning and night and hopes to return back to His kingdom someday. She has many divine qualities and is continually developing her talents and strengthening traits such as kindness, obedience, and love. She believes in the great purpose of womanhood. Divine Nature won an oscar this year for her role in the 2008 remake of "Cinderella." Individual Worth knows she is on a mission. She is always finding gifts everywhere she looks, and she is using those gifts to fulfill her life long mission to become like her Father. She knows that true confidence comes from pleasing the Lord, not the world. She believes in herself and is always striving to become better. Individual Worth is most well known for her leading role in the movie "Mission Possible." Her motto is "remember the worth of souls is great in the sight of God." Knowledge As a seeker of learning, Knowledge is constantly reading and studying. She often invites her good friend "Faith" to study with her. Knowledge is always found seeking new skills. Knowledge is most famous for her roles in documentaries, home improvement shows, and movies featured on the history channel. Her motto is, "Learn something new everyday!"
Choice and Accountability is very selective about the movies she stars in, the parties she goes to, and the clothes she wears. Choice and Accountability knows that she controls her destiny by each of the little choices she makes. In her own words, Choice and Accountability has said, Sometimes we have to decide between what is easy to do and what is right to do. In these moments, I remember who I am, why I am here, and where I want to go." Choice and Accountability knows that choices are like dominoes. One choice triggers consequence after consequence, like a row of dominoes toppling over because the first one fell. Good Works Good Works has a passion for building and working and helping others. She spends every waking hour possible doing her father's work. The paparazzi have often found Good Works at homeless shelters, rest homes, and with the widowed and the sick. She does her good deeds willingly without expecting to be rewarded or recognized. Good Works has learned that an excellent remedy for loneliness, sadness, or self-pity is to forget yourself and reach out to help others. She has many nicknames, including "charity," "love," and "service." Her movie career is full of countless "supporting roles"-most recently with Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Care-A-bout-You." Integrity is the most honest star in show business today. Integrity's greatest qualities include honesty, sincerity, truthfulness, keeping her promises, punctuality, fairness, and justice. What Integrity thinks is reflected in what she says, and what she says is reflected in what she does. Her thoughts, speech, and actions are always in harmony with her values. This takes a lot of courage, but Integrity is never afraid to do what is right and to stand up for what she believes. Although she was offered a lot of money, Integrity refused to star in the 2005 hit movie, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Liar." After the Skit: Narrator or Speaker #3: In a world that is dark and confused, we can become bright and shining stars like faith, divine nature, individual worth, knowledge, choice and accountability, good works, and integrity. We thank these stars for joining us today for the private screening of their upcoming movie Like the Stars. Play the Video: Like the Stars *This video introduces the 2008 youth theme and can be previewed and purchased on www.jennyphillips.com. Perform the Song: Like the Stars

Thread the cord in the needle and then pull the needle into the middle of the stretch cord and then fold the stretch cord over to double it. String the beads onto the cord by using the needle. Make the bracelet the length you need, usually between 6.5 inches or 7.5 inches. Cut the needle out, stretch the Lycra out 2 or 3 inches and tie a surgeon's knot. You will be tying 4 ends. After you pull the knot really tight, cut the ends quite close, put on a drop of Hypo cement and pull the knot inside a bead.

Adult Leader: These young women unit their faith and good works with millions of youth around the world. Play the Video Presentation: Like the Stars Young Women Narrator: (Could open up the storybook again). In a very dark and terrible kingdom, the prince of darkness saw the good works and faith of the young men and women of the high king. He saw how fair and beautiful and good they were. They were the fairest in all the world, and they were spreading light and joy to mankind, and it made him very mad. So the prince of darkness jumped on to his dark horse and came to the fair young women with magazine and tv images of women of a different type of beauty. This is beauty, he whispered and shouted and wrote everywhere. It is your bodies and your clothes that make you beautiful. But the fair young women were steadfast & immovable in their faith. They knew that the true beauty in them came from their faith and good works. Play the Video Presentation: To Become Like Him Perform the Song: To Become Like Him (female soloist)

Idea #38: Night Hike: Shining Like the Stars in a Darkened World
Preparation: Choose a trail that will not be too difficult to hike after the sun goes down. Prepare 12 signs and place them at intervals along the trail. Make one sign for each of the following words: repentance, prayer, service, work, health, reading, blessings, fasting, friends, music, endurance, goals. Decorate each sign with stars-consider using glow-in-the-dark paint. Instruct the youth to dress properly and bring a flashlight. Start the hike after the sun has set. To begin the hike: Invite the youth to gaze up at the stars. Explain that even though the sun has gone down, there is still light in the sky because of the stars. We live in a world of increasing darkness. But just as the stars give light to a darkened sky, we are lights shining through the darkness of the world. When we choose to let our light shine, we are like the stars. Using Matthew 5, explain how the Savior labeled his followers "the light of the world." We are expected to use the light we have been given, the light of the gospel, and share it with others. We are to be examples and uphold standards in a wicked world. But sometimes, even though we have this light, the trail along our personal journeys can become darkened by sin or trials. Explain to the youth that the purpose of this hike is to learn 12 ways outlined by President Ezra Taft Benson to overcome sorrow, disappointment, and depression. Each of these 12 suggestions brings light to our lives at times when the trail becomes dark. We can then share our light with others-like the stars. During the Hike: Stop at each sign and briefly discuss how each principle can light up a darkened path. Use many personal experiences and stories from the scriptures. Use President Benson's talk for help (Ensign, November 1974, 65-67). Alternate Option: In the days proceeding the hike, assign one or more youth to each topic. Have them report at each sign. After the Hike: Bear your testimony that we have a great responsibility to share our light with others. This can become difficult at those times when we feel we have little or no light in our lives. Sorrow, disappointment, and depression may be experienced frequently during the turbulent years of growing up. But using these 12 guidelines from President Benson will help restore light to our souls-and we will in turn be better able to share our light with others, just as a night sky is brightened by the stars.

Beauty
There is a certain type of beauty that is created with liquids, creams, powders, hot metal, designer clothes and accessories, excessive dieting and exercise and computer manipulation. We see hundreds of images around us everywhere in the world today. We should keep our bodies clean and beautiful just like the temples around the world. But Our thoughts and desires can become so focused on becoming physically beautiful, that we can miss the true purpose of this life. There is an incredible beauty in a girl that cares more about becoming like Christ. When that is the focus of a girl's life, you can see it in her eyes, and in the way she carries herself. Outward beauty can kindle only the eye. But a beauty that comes from a pure and faithful life can hold love eternally.

Acting Skills Have someone present a workshop on Acting Skills. They could talk about how life is a stage and we are actors. There is always an audience, even if we cant see them. The audience is our Heavenly Father. 1) Do a role play to show how they choose how the script will go in their lives. Using the scripts below, read the first part, and then have 2 different girls read the responding part. Ask the girls what script they would choose? Or use the role play to show how they do not have to play the role of the script they are given by the world. They can choose their own lines. Oh Romeo You Are So Cute Act II Scene 1 Oh Romeo You Are So Cute Script #1 Act II Scene 1 Script #2 Romeo: My dearest Juliet. How fine you look tonight. 2) Have a section on choosing how you react to things. Talk about how we have the free agency to choose how we respond to life and how we act. When we have hard times we can be angry and bitter and pessimistic or we can be humble and optimistic. 3) Have the audience help you make a list of common ways that stars of the world act in their personal lives. Have the audience help you make a list of common ways that stars in Gods eyes act in their personal lives. 4) Make magnets our handouts from the following page for each of the girls.

Image Have someone present a workshop on Image. Pass out small mirrors to everyone. Have them look in the mirror and tell them that they are seeing their worldly image. Then have them close there eyes and think about ways they want their Heavenly Fathers image inside them. Talk about the importance of keeping their physical image in accordance with what they want to be spiritually. Use the Dress and Appearance and Physical Health section in the For the Strength of Youth Pamphlet. Go over guidelines of dress and appearance for missionaries. Why is that so important?
Read this from Spencer W. Kimball: Spencer W. Kimball, On My Honor, Ensign, Apr 1979, 2 We say anew and more vigorously to all of you: Trim your hair appropriately. Wear modest, clean clothing. Your clothes dont have to be new and the latest fashion, but they should be clean, modest, and neat. Be dignified in your outward appearance and in your manners and in your inward morality. Take pride in your principles. Tear down, as it were, any of the old sheds of the past. Repent of old transgressions and start this school year with clean hands and a pure heart, reflected by good grooming, acceptable apparel, and personal integrity. Let me confess one of the sad disappointments I sometimes feel: The returned missionary who, after two years of taking great pride in how he looks and what he represents, returns to this campus or some other similar place to see how quickly he can let his hair grow, how fully he can develop a moustache and long sideburns and push to the very margins of appropriate grooming, how clumpy his shoes get, how tattered his clothes are, how close to being grubby he can get without being refused admittance to the school. That, my young returned missionary brethren, is one of the great disappointments in my life. I meet with prime ministers and presidents, with sovereigns and rulers, political and public figures all over the world, and one of the things they inevitably say about us (and always with warmth and appreciation) is, We have seen your missionaries. Weve seen them all over the globe, in every state of the union and in most countries of the world. Without exception, they look like young men ought to look. They are clean cut, neatly dressed, well-groomed, and dignified. My, that makes me proud! Im trying to do my own little part in missionary work and that kind of comment makes me so proud of you. Then sometimes these great leaders say, Your missionaries look like just the kind of young men I would want in my business, or in my government, or in my embassy, or in my law firm. Sometimes they even say, They look just like the young man I would like for a son-in-law. That makes me proudest of all.
Connections Have someone present a workshop on Connections. Its all about who you know in the entertainment industry. How much easier is it for a child of a movie star or a spouse of a movie star to break into the entertainment industry. Talk about how in life, we have no better chance of becoming a true star than in having strong connections with Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and our family. What Matters Most Is What Lasts Longest (M. Russell Ballard) Talk about the ways we can stay connect to Heavenly Father and the Lord and our family. Talk about the importance of not leaving the Saviors side through wrong choices so we can stay connected to Him and His power. Play or perform the song I Will Never Move. Confidence Have someone present a workshop on Confidence. Create a skit (or break the girls into groups and have them create a skit) with a director and actors that shows what an actor would be like that had no confidence. Talk about where true confidence comes from. Use this talks as reference: Young Women and Young Men general presidencies, Real Confidence, Liahona, Jan 2007, 810 I Can Do It! Confidence Builders If you want to grow more and more confident, here are some things you can do: Pray, as Moses did, that the Lord will help you remember that you are His child and that you have an important work to do. Make a list of your strengths and good qualities. Read and ponder your patriarchal blessing, or prepare to receive one. Serve others, and write in your journal how service makes you feel. Eat well and exercise. Your body is a gift from God, and good nutrition and physical activity will lift your mood and help you feel better about yourself. Offer prayers of gratitude, and record your gratitude in a journal. Develop your talents. Keep the commandments. Remember that confidence does not come by being better than someone else. It comes from knowing you are a child of God and doing what He would have you do.

Activities
Idea #57: Write Your Own Story Activity
Have a devotional with the girls and talk to them about the fact that we choose what our story will be here on this earth. While we may not be able to choose all of the things that happen to us, it is up to us to choose what we become. Create a page or a small book for them to write their own story in. Prepare them spiritually, and then have them each find a quiet place where they can pray and write. You may choose to have them use the following headings in their story: My Story by _________________________ The Treasures I Am Searching For The Type of Princess I am Becoming How I Want My Story to End

3. Read the following: A letter was addressed to me from a group of boys somewhere in the European theater in World War II: Here away from the people we have known and loved, God has found a new inlet to our souls through which He whispers truths we had been prone to forget . . . A girl is beautiful when her virtue cannot be questioned; when her stability and faith in the Church are steadfast. A girl is beautiful when she is sincere and humble; when she looks upon a child with affection and upon a sufferer with compassion. She is beautiful because she has a smile and a cheerful word for her associates. Beauty does not lie in the face alone, but rather, it is measured by character and the sweetness of her disposition. (Teachings of Harold B. Lee 4. Where possible, play the video To Become Like Him. (available for preview and purchase on www.jennyphillips.com) 5. Sing or play the song To Become Like Him 6. Have a leader give a powerful testimony on the Savior and his attributes. Have them testify that the purpose of this life is to become like Him and to gain his attributes. 7. End by having all the girls sing Steadfast in You

Idea #71: American Idle
1) Briefly discuss what the word "idle" means and announce that you are going to play, "American Idle." 2) Break into groups. Give each group 10 minutes to come up with a short skit about idleness. The skits should portray ways that we as a society, young and old, can be idle with our time. You will be surprised at what they will come up with! You may also consider giving each group a different age group to portray-young children, teenagers, college students, adults, retirees, etc. Decide if they will be allowed to talk or if you want the skit to be pantomimed (and have the audience guess what they are doing). You could bring a box of props or provide materials (paper, markers, glue, stapler, etc.) for them to make their own. 3) Have each group perform their skit. 4) Have the audience vote on their favorite skit (use private ballots). 5) Award the winners of "American Idle." 6) Using the scripture Mosiah 5:15, discuss what it means to "abound in good works," which is essentially, the opposite of being idle. What are good works? Why should be abound in them? How did the Savior spend His time? What does service do for us personally? Play the song, "Someone Needs Your Star." 7) Break into groups again. This time, instruct each group to come up with a service project that you could do as an organization. 8) Have each group present their idea and vote again (privately) on which service project everyone would like to do for the next activity. Or, get out a calendar and choose days to do them all throughout the year.

Steadfast and Immovable Slide Show-Gather photographs of the youth. You can use pictures of them together (taken from previous camps or activities) as well as some of their individual pictures you used for the presentation. Create a slide presentation to play with the song, "Steadfast and Immovable." Activity: 1) Begin with an opening song and prayer 2) Like the Stars: Take a moment to share your admiration for them. Emphasize that each of them are talented, capable people who are armed with unique gifts. Even President Hinckley stands in awe of such a strong generation of youth. Read his words: You represent a great generation in the history of the world and in the history of this Church. In terms of the Church, I feel that you are part of the greatest generation we have ever had Nearly every one of you desires to do the right thing. And in most instances you are doing it. You are trying to keep yourselves free from the corrosive stains of the world. It is not easy. It is a constant challenge. Every one of you is a story of success. But for some of you there are chapters in that story that speak of failure which you wish to rise above and which you can rise above. Regardless of what may have happened in the past, there is a way to make a new start, and you are encouraged to discuss this with your bishop. Now, this evening, my dear young friends, I present to you an invitation and a challengeRegardless of your way of doing things in the past, I offer you a challenge this night to square your lives with the teachings of the gospelI invite you to walk the path of faith with me. I challenge you to stand for that which is right and true and good" (Gordon B. Hinckley, "'True to the Faith'," Ensign, Jun 1996, 2). As the stars stand steady and constant, so each young man and woman has the potential to "stand for that which is right and true and good." Let them know that this night is about them-what is good about them and what they are doing right. 3) Presentation: a. Using the power point presentation, highlight each youth one by one. As they are being highlighted, ask them to sit in the Star Throne. Applaud after each spotlight. 4) Steadfast and Immovable Slide Show 5) End with a closing prayer. 6) Serve "Raspberry Star Cookies" for refreshments

Idea #82: Scripture Star Search Scripture Star Search: A Book of Mormon Hollywood!
Let's face it: few of today's celebrities are famous for righteousness or good works. But the scriptures are full of men and women that exemplify Mosiah 5:15-"Therefore, I would that ye should be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works." A "Book of Mormon Hollywood Night" is a fun way for youth to dig these "stars" out of the scriptures. Preparation: Decorate the cultural hall in a Hollywood theme. Hang stars on the wall, place sunglasses on tables for center pieces, and run a "red carpet" along the floor. Materials Needed: Decorations for the cultural hall (Hollywood "Stars" theme) Long strip of red fabric (the red carpet) Assortment of "costume" items in a box Paper, markers, glitter, glue, scissors, tape, etc. A copy of "Scripture Star Search: Group Instruction Sheet" for each group Background music for the "Red Carpet Show" Instructions: Divide the youth into small groups. Give each group a "star" to research in the scriptures. Instruct each group to search the scriptures to discover how their person exemplifies Mosiah 5:15. How was this person steadfast and immovable? What were some of their good works? Give each group a "Scripture Star Search: Instruction Sheet" to fill out about their star. Explain that you are going to have a red carpet show after the groups have finished. Each group should choose one member to "be" the star. Instruct them to have fun dressing this person up for the red carpet. Bring an assortment of costume items-headbands, bows and arrows, swords and shields, fake brass plates, wraps, shawls, sunglasses, feather boas, pieces of scrap fabric, etc. Be sure to also have paper, glue, staplers, markers and glitter on hand. Each group should decorate a Name Star with his or her name on it to be added to the Book of Mormon Hollywood Walk of Fame and write a short, snazzy "Red Carpet Introduction" about their star to be read as he or she walks down the red carpet. You may wish to read an example such as the one below (using a character no group will have, such as a character from the Bible). Sample Red Carpet Introduction: And who do we have here? Could it be? Why, yes! It's Peter! Peter is sporting a classic fisherman look, complete with a net draped around his shoulders and some seaweed hanging from his belt. Peter is best known for his role as one of the original 12 apostles appointed during the mortal ministry of Jesus. His good works included many missions and leading the church after the death of Christ. Peter's loyalty to the Lord was tested many times, and he proved to be a faithful and diligent servant. In fact, the Lord himself gave Peter the name "Cephas," which means, "Rock." Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Peter truly rocks! Let's hear it for Peter!! When each group is done, have everyone sit down to form an audience for the red carpet "show." Choose a particularly vivacious youth to be the "MC." Bring something fancy for him or her to wear-a suit jacket and bow tie for a boy, sparkly jewels and a feather boa for a girl. Or, you may want to choose this person before hand and ask them to bring their own costume. Make sure that the MC has a working microphone to do the announcing. Each group takes turns parading their "star" down the red carpet as the MC read the description written by the group. Play some upbeat (preferably wordless) music in the background as each star parades down the red carpet. After the each star's turn, their group should add the decorated star with his or her name decorated on it (ie: Peter) to the "Book of Mormon Hollywood Walk of Fame" on the floor.

Book of Mormon "Star" List: Lehi Nephi Sariah Jacob King Benjamin Abinadi Alma Sr. Alma Jr. 4 Sons of Mosiah Captain Moroni Helaman 2000 Stripling Warriors Mothers of the Stripling Warriors Nephi and Lehi (missionaries) Mormon Moroni (If you want to expand on this list there are several more options in the Old and New Testaments, Pearl of Great Price, and D&C.) Conclusion: After the show, take a minute to bear testimony about the importance of patterning our lives after these scripture stars. Not many of today's stars are honored for their righteousness or good works. We must look to the scriptures for examples of true heroes. Bear your witness that by remaining steadfast and immovable and engaging ourselves in good works we will find true happiness and increased faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

4) Choose one person from your group to be your Star for the Red Carpet Show. Dress him or her up using items from the costume box, paper, glitter, fabric, glue, etc. 5) Write a "Red Carpet Introduction" for the MC to read as your star parades down the red carpet. Be sure to include details about how this person exemplified Mosiah 5:15-how they were steadfast and immovable and what some of their good works were. (Write legibly so the MC can read it clearly.) we don't see the whole picture. So, just how big is a star? Stars come in many types and sizes. Someone with no knowledge of stars may look up into the sky and believe the stars to be tiny enough to fit in their hand. But those of us who have learned about stars know better. Some stars can be the diameter of 12 miles. While a 12 mile long star seems huge to us, a star that size would actually be considered very small. The closest star to us, the sun, is 100 times larger than the earth. Something that large seems phenomenal, until you consider the size of stars called "supergiants"-these stars can be 1000 times the size of the sun! Knowing just how big stars are gives us a different perspective about those tiny little dots of light in the sky. None of us have ever been to visit a star personally, so we have to take someone else's word for their approximate size. Scientists study about stars and present us the gathered information. We trust that what they say is true, because we trust that their study and research has produced valid facts. Just as stars may appear small to the unlearned, so the gospel may appear unimportant to one who does not trust that there is a bigger picture. With our limited vision of mortality, sometimes the gospel may appear to be restrictive, insignificant, or inconvenient. This may be in part because we can't see the whole picture. Consider one who learns for the first time that stars are astronomically huge objects of burning gas, rather than simple tiny dots of light. Will you be just as surprised as this person, when at the judgment day you learn just how important the gospel was? Or, when you realize that keeping yourself worthy to enter the temple really did matter? Don't wait for that day to learn how significant the gospel was for your life. Instead, trust the Lord's servants. Live the Lord's standards, and enjoy the blessings that will flow to you for being unspotted from the world. Even if something is difficult to understand, or even if it seems to be inconvenient or insignificant, remember that, "ye cannot behold with your natural eyes, for the present time, the design of your God" (D&C 58:3-4). Trust that the Lord had a plan-a big picture-and that His ultimate desire is for you to return home to Him. Pray for the faith and courage to live these standards so that you may become steadfast and immovable and return to Him someday.

Captain (bishop or young mens president): We have just gone through enemy territory and made it through because of the force that is with us. This force is something that every one of you can have in your life. It is the strongest power you could have and will always be stronger than any enemy you encounter. This force is the holy ghost. As you journey to the stars, it will protect you and help you fight against the evils around you. The captain can continue on this subject in his own words--talking about the power that comes into our lives when we have the holy ghost with us. End with: No matter how small or weak or unimportant we may feel, when we have the Holy Ghost, the force with us, we will be surprisingly strong and mighty. Please seat back and enjoy your in-flight entertainment. Play DVD Clip (in flight-entertainment): Play the DVD clip of Master Yoda in the ultimate light saber duel from Star Wars II (rated PG) Turn lights back on Leader: We thank you for riding in the GJC for this part of the journey. Unfortunately, the journey to the stars requires more than eating peanuts and watching the in-flight entertainment. Making it to the stars will require much hard work on your part at many space stations along the way. Please look at your Ticket to the stars to find your first space station. And thank you again for riding in the GJC. *The youth then break up in groups and go to the following mini-classes. *HAND OUT Astronaut Ice Cream as the youth leave. SPACE STATIONS
Idea #100: Space Station #1: Stars Around the World (missionary prep) (Main part of lunch in this class)
Decorate the room with pictures of missionaries and maps of different parts of the world. Cut out stars from construction paper, etc. and decorate the borders of the pictures and maps. Have the adult putting on this mini class start with the following: Mosiah 5:15 admonishes us to abound in good works. One of the greatest works we can focus our lives on is missionary work. What greater service is there than to share the gospel with others? This world, that is so dark and confused, has about 60,000 missionaries shining like stars around the world. Missionaries give light and guidance to others, but serving a mission is also one of the biggest steps to on your personal journey to become like the stars. Do the following activities in this workshop: Activity #1: Ask the missionaries to come and speak to the youth for 5 minutes about preparing for their missions. Ask them also to include information about what it is like to be a missionary, what they love about serving, and how the youth can be missionaries now. If you want, you can open up 5 minutes of time for the youth to ask the missionaries questions. Activity #2: Book of Mormon Testimonies: Have each youth write their testimony inside the front cover and think of one person to give it to. Activity #3: Laundry Game: Divide into teams and see who can fold a basket of laundry the fastest. OR divide into teams and have a laundry basket full of church socks. Time each team as they match the socks, and see which team can match up the socks the fastest. Activity #4: Mac and Cheese Sampler: Sample different ways to spice up an old favorite-mac and cheese! Make a mack and cheese bar with diced chicken, ground beef, cubed ham, chili, salsa, chopped tomatoes, crushed red peppers, hot dogs, and/or crumbled bacon. This would serve as lunch, so you may want to also provide salad and garlic bread.

Idea #101: Space Station #2: Eyes on the North Star (standards)
When you are facing the North Star, you are facing north. Likewise, when you are facing the Savior, you are facing heavenward. All other stars move, but the North Star does not. It is a fixed point that never changes. He never moves. His standards that are never changing help us navigate through life. Keeping standards and standing steadfast and immovable will help navigate you in the right direction. Have the leader discuss the standards outlined in the "For the Strength of Youth" pamphlet. Scripture Idea: 1 Ne 10:18 (He is the same today, yesterday, and tomorrow.) Activity #1: Give each of the youth a bookmark from the following page. Play the song I Will Never Move, and ask them to think about their commitment to the standards while the songs plays. Activity #2: Have a fondue star fruit bar. Tell the youth how sweet their lives will be when they live the gospel. Give each of them a large star shaped cookie. Make a bar with cream cheese frosting and cut up fruit that they can decorate their stars with. Try kiwis, peaches, strawberries, raspberries, nectarines, star fruit, bananas, mango, canned mandarin oranges)
Idea #102: Space Station #3: A Starry Eyed Panel Starry-Eyed Panel
Objective: Leaders in the ward will speak in a panel-like setting about being steadfast and immovable. Give them a chance to write questions that they would like addressed to the panel. Ask 4-5 leaders in the ward to be a part of this panel (consider members of the bishopric, members of the YW/YM Presidencies, Relief Society President, Elders Quorum President, etc.). Questions may include: -What were challenges when you were a teenager? -Share a time when you had to stand up to a peer. -Why did you decide to go on a mission? -What did you do as a teenager to prepare for the temple? -What does the phrase, "steadfast and immovable" mean to you? -What did you love about being a teenager? -What were some things you were involved in as a teenager? -Now that you are an adult, what is one thing you wish you had known as a teenager? -How have "good works" played a role in your life? -How has a mission blessed your life? -How has a temple marriage blessed your life? -What advice do you have for a young man or young woman who is not sure they have a testimony? -Also include appropriate questions written by the youth.
Ask the leaders to prayerfully prepare for the panel presentation. Personal experiences and examples from the scriptures should be included. This should be a fun class for the youth, but also a time to learn from righteous real-life examples of their leaders. Panel Presentation: Sit the panel in a line in front of the youth. Make sure there is a microphone that can be passed if you are not in a small room. Ask the questions to the panel and give all who wish a chance to respond. (Or, to save on time, you may wish to assign a specific panel member to answer a specific question.) Make sure the panel understands that their responses should not exceed a couple of minutes. Allow the youth to present questions that occur to them at
** NOTE: If you would like to include games in your youth conference, you could change 1 or 2 of this panels into games/activities that had to do with the them of stars, space shuttles, the moon, etc. Get creative and let the kids have a lot of fun. Think of using moon walk, starburst, milky way bars, relay races, etc.
