Proper shipping and appropriate storage are assumed.

Note

Devices with model code 3767-x...x. 03 and up are equipped with a hinged cover without an opening for exhaust air. The required exhaust air connection is now integrated in the mounting equipment. Should these positioners be intended for attachment to old actuator models, it is important to check whether there is an exhaust connection. If necessary, the mounting accessories must also be replaced. 3

1. Design and principle of operation The electropneumatic positioner is used to produce a preselected relationship between the valve stem position (controlled variable) and the controller output signal (reference variable). It compares the electric output signal from a control device to the travel of the control valve and supplies a pressure signal (manipulated variable) to the actuator. The positioner consists of an electropneumatic conversion unit (i/p converter) and a pneumatic conversion unit equipped with a lever for travel pick-off, a measuring diaphragm and a pneumatic control system with nozzle, diaphragm lever (flapper plate) and amplifier. The positioner is designed for either direct attachment to SAMSON Type 3277 Actuators or for attachment according to NAMUR (DIN/IEC 534) by means of an adapter housing. The positioner can be additionally equipped with either inductive limit switches and/or a solenoid valve or a position transmitter. The DC control signal of, e.g. 4 to 20 mA from the control unit is transferred to the electropneumatic conversion unit (13) where it is converted into a proportional pressure signal pe. The positioner operates according to the forcebalance principle. The valve travel, i.e. the valve position is transmitted via the pin (1.1) to the pick-off lever (1), determining the torsional force of the measuring spring (4). This force is balanced against the positioning force which is produced by the pressure pe on the measuring diaphragm (5). If either the control signal or the valve position changes, the diaphragm lever (3) moves, changing the distance to the nozzle (2.1 or 2.2) depending on the adjusted operating direction of the positioner. The air is supplied to the pneumatic amplifier (10) and the pressure regulator (9). The controlled supply air is fed to the i/p module and then flows through the Xp restriction (8) and the nozzle (2.1, 2.2) against the diaphragm lever (flapper plate). Any change of the reference variable or of 6

the valve travel results in a corresponding pressure change upstream and downstream of the amplifier. The air (signal pressure pst) controlled by the amplifier flows through the volume restriction (11) to the pneumatic actuator and causes the plug stem to move to a position corresponding to the DC input signal (reference variable). The adjustable restrictions Xp (8) and Q (11) are used to optimize the positioner control loop. The pick-off lever (1) and the measuring spring (4) are to be selected according to the nominal valve travel and the nominal reference variable span. Positioner with inductive limit switches In this version, the rotary shaft of the positioner carries two adjustable tags which actuate the built-in proximity switches. Positioner with solenoid valve When the positioner is equipped with a solenoid valve, the relay can cause to override the positioner and open or close the valve (fail-safe positions). If a control signal corresponding to the binary signal "0" (off) is applied to the input, the signal pressure pst is shut off and the actuator is vented. The actuator springs push the control valve in fail-safe position. If a control signal corresponding to the binary signal "1" (on) is applied to the input, the signal pressure pst is supplied to the actuator. The control valve is in control operation. Positioner with position transmitter Due to the space requirements of the position transmitter, it is impossible to equip a positioner containing a position transmitter with integrated limit switches or an integrated solenoid valve. The position transmitter is used to ensure a certain relationship between valve position, i.e. valve travel, and a controller output current signal of 4 to 20 mA. As a result of the position transmitter setting, both end posi-

tions "valve closed" or "valve fully opened" respectively as well as all intermediate positions are signalized. Since the valve position is signalized independently of the input signal to

the positioner, the position transmitter is a suitable option for checking the current valve position.

2. Attachment to control valve You can either attach the positioner directly to a SAMSON Type 3277 Actuator or to valves with cast yokes or rod-type yokes according to NAMUR (DIN IEC 534) . When combined with an intermediate piece, you can also attach the device as rotary positioner to rotary actuators. Since the positioner is also supplied as a basic unit without accessory equipment, you should refer to the tables below for the required mounting parts and order numbers respectively. You should remove the transportation cover on the positioners backside only directly before attachment. Mounting position and operating direction The operating direction of the positioner determines its mounting position to the actuator, as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 6. The turnboard (7) at the positioner must be mounted correspondingly. For an increasing input signal (reference variable), the signal pressure pst may be either increasing (direct action >>) or decreasing (reverse action <>). The same is true for a decreasing reference variable.
Actuator stem extends

Direct action >> results in a decreasing signal pressure, whereas reverse action <> results in an increasing signal pressure. On the turnboard (7), the operating direction is indicated by symbols (direct >> and reverse <>). Depending on the turnboard position, the adjusted operating direction and its symbol become visible. If the required operating direction does not correspond with the visible symbol, or if you want to change the operating direction, remove the fastening screw at the turnboard, turn the board by 180 and reinstall, using the screw. Make sure not to loose the three rubber seals inserted in the housing. Any subsequent changes, such as reversing the operating direction of the positioner control loop or changing the actuator from "actuator stem extends" to "actuator stem retracts" or vice versa, result in a change of the positioners mounting position.

2.1 Direct attachment to the Type 3277 Actuator Positioner and actuator are available as one unit and can be configured by the manufacturer on the basis of the desired data such that they can be directly mounted to the control valve (section 4.1.1). If you want to mount the positioner later, or if you want to change the actuator size or the operating direction, you are required to observe the correct combination of the required mounting parts for proper assembly by all means (see Figs. 3 and 4 as well as Tables 1 to 4). Attachment either left or right depends on the required operating direction of the positioner, >> or <>. For mounting, first screw the clamp (1.2) to the actuator stem. Make sure that the fastening screw is located in the groove of the actuator stem. Screw the associated lever D1 or D2 to the lever of the positioner. Fasten the distance plate (15) with the seal towards the actuator yoke. Place positioner on the plate such that lever D1 or D2 can slide centrically over the pin of the clamp.
15

Then, screw positioner to the distance plate (15). Install cover (16). For 240 to 700 cm2 actuators, you must align the lateral switch plate at the connection block (Fig. 4 below) with the arrow symbol on the connection block, i.e. the actuator symbol for either "actuator stem extends" or "actuator stem retracts" must correspond with the respective actuator model used. If not, remove the two fastening screws and the switch plate, turn switch plate by 180 degrees and reinstall. Place connection block with the associated seal rings against the positioner and the actuator yoke and screw tight using the fasten-ing screw. For actuators with fail-safe action "actuator stem retracts", additionally mount the prefabricated signal pressure line. Suspend the required measuring spring (Table 5) between diaphragm lever (3) and span adjustment screw (6.1), using the outer slot. For 120 cm2 actuators (Type 3277-5), you must align the hole in the distance plate with Type 3277-5 with 120 cm2

the seal located in the hole of the actuator yoke when attaching the positioner. In addition, you must remove the screw on the rear cover of the positioner (Fig. 5), and close the lateral signal pressure output "output" by means of the plug contained in the accessory kit. With 120 cm2 actuators, the signal pressure is transmitted to the diaphragm chamber via the switch-over plate (Fig. 4, right), and not via connection block. Align the switch-over plate with the proper symbol and screw the plate tight. Important: If a solenoid valve or similar device is attached to the 120 cm2 actuator in addition to the positioner, do not remove the M3 screw installed at the back of the positioner housing. Instead, the signal pressure must be fed from the signal pressTable 1 Required lever with associated clamp and distance plate D1 (33 mm long with clamp 17 mm high) D1 (33 mm long with clamp 17 mm high) D2 (44 mm long with clamp 13 mm high) Table 2

ure connection "output" to the actuator via connecting plate (Table 2). The black switchover plate is no longer used. Filling the actuator with air: If the spring chamber of the actuator must be filled with the exhaust air of the positioner, you can connect the chamber (with version "actuator stem extends") with the connection block by means of a tube (Table 3). For this purpose, remove the plug at the connection block. For version "actuator stem retracts" and Type 3277-5 with a 120 cm2 actuator, the spring chamber can be filled with air via an internal hole, which means no external tubing is required. Important: If the control valve is installed, the lateral cover of the actuator must be mounted

angle (28), you must suspend the spring supplied with the accessory package at the back of the positioner housing as shown in Fig. 5. For positioner attachment you will need the mounting parts listed in Table 5. The nominal travel of the valve determines which lever and which measuring spring you have to use (Table 6). You can attach the positioner either to the left or to the right side of the control valve (Figs. 6 and 7). If you turn the positioner at the adapter housing by 180 degrees, you can set or change the operating direction of the positioner/control valve unit. 2.2.1 Mounting sequence Choose the required mounting parts and measuring spring from Table 4 or 5. Control valve with cast yoke: Screw the plate (20) to the coupling of actuator and plug stem using countersunk screws. With 2100 cm2 and 2800 cm2 actuators use additional mounting bracket (32). Remove the rubber plug from inside the adapter housing and fasten housing on the left or right side of the Namur rib using a hexagon screw (see Fig. 6). Control valve with rod-type yoke: Screw the plate (20) to the carrier of the plug stem. Screw the studs (29) into the adapter housing. Place the housing with the mounting plate (30) on either the right or left side (Fig. 6) of the plug stem and screw on tight using nuts (31). Make sure that the lever (18) to be mounted subsequently is in horizontal position at midtravel of the valve. Screw the pin (19) into the center row of holes of the plate (20) and lock it in a position

above the correct lever marking (1 to 2), see Table 6. Clamp the clip (21) onto the lever (18) according to Fig. 7. If the actuator is attached with its air connection pointing to the front (Fig. 6), the clip must be clamped onto the lever (18) with the open side pointing downwards. Plug the lever (18) together with the clamping plate (22) on the shaft (25). The clip must surround the pin (19).

2.2.2 Presetting the travel Move the valve to 50 % of travel. Adjust the shaft (25) in the adapter housing such that the black pointer (24) is aligned with the cast marking on the adapter housing. Screw clamp (22) tight in this position using the screw (23). Screw in the pin (27) at the positioner lever on the side of the insert nut and secure it with a hex nut on the other side. Note the mounting position A or B according to Table 6 and Fig. 7. Put the positioner to the adapter housing, allowing for the correct mounting direction such that the pin (27) lies against the angle (28), as shown in Fig. 7. Screw the positioner to the adapter housing. Attention pin must not slip out of the angle once installed. Suspend the required measuring spring (Table 6) between the diaphragm lever (3) and the span adjustment screw (6.1), using the outer insert slot. Adjust positioner as described in section 4.2 .

2.3 Attachment to rotary actuators (Fig. 8) You can also attach the positioner to rotary actuators according to VDI/VDE 3845 by using the mounting kits and accessories listed in the tables below. In this arrangement, the actuators rotary motion is converted via the cam disk on the actuator shaft and the feeler roll of the positioner lever into the linear motion required for the positioners pneumatic control system. Attention: Use below table to check if the proper measuring spring (1 or 2) has been installed! If you employ the positioner with doubleacting springless rotary actuators, you are required to attach an amplifier with reversing relay to the positioner (side of connections). In this case, you must turn the pressure regulator screw all the way to the right (clockwise), see also section 3.1.2. If you attach the positioner to SAMSON Type 3278 Actuators, as shown in Fig. 8.1, the positioners exhaust air is used to fill the actuators inside and the unused chamber behind the diaphragm without the need for any additional tubing. If you attach the positioner to actuators of other manufacturers (see Fig. 8.2), the chamber behind the diaTable 7 SAMSON Type 3278 Actuator Order no.

phragm can be filled with air via a tube connection between actuator and intermediate piece. 2.3.1 Mounting the cam follower lever Place lever with roll (35) on the side of the transmission lever (37) opposite from the insert nuts and secure with the supplied screws (38) and washers. Important: To ensure a close physical contact between the cam follower roll and the cam disk, suspend the spring contained in the accessory kit 1400-6660 at the rear of the positioner housing (see Fig. 5). 2.3.2 Mounting the intermediate piece SAMSON actuator: Install adapter (36) at the free end of the rotary actuator shaft. housing. For this purpose, install the supplied doublethreaded nuts in the connection bores of the positioner. Attach reversing amplifier with the hollow screws and the gasket to the positioner, thereby assuring that the air filling bore at the intermediate piece is covered. Depending on the direction of the rotary motion, you must connect the actuator chambers with the A1 and A2 outputs. 15

2.3.3 Default setting of the cam disk The cam disks default setting depends on the control valve model used. Figs. 9.1 to 9.8 show a linear cam disk as an example. Figs. 9.1 to 9.4 refer to a control valve assembly with a spring-loaded rotary actuator which opens counterclockwise. The location of the springs in the actuator determines the failsafe position of the valve. Figs. 9.5 to 9.8 show the cam disk adjustment for a double-acting springless rotary actuator. The direction of rotation, either counterclockwise or clockwise, depends on the actuator and valve model used. Starting point for all settings is the closed valve. You can set the operating action (direct >> or reverse <>) of the positioner, i.e. whether the valve shall open or close with increasing reference variable, at the turnboard (7). Each cam disk carries two cam sections. The starting point of each section is a small bore. Depending on the operating direction of the rotary actuator signal pressure opens or closes valve the starting point on the cam, either marked N (standard characteristic) or 1 (reverse characteristic), must be directed towards the cam follower roll. The starting point can also be located on the back of the cam disk. In this case, turn over cam disk.

The starting point (bore) for the selected characteristic must be aligned such that the center of rotation of the cam disk, the 0 position on the scale, and the arrow mark on the plate are in line. When you align the cam disk, install the double-sided scale disk so that the value on the scale corresponds with the control valves direction of rotation. Important: The 0 position of the scale should always correspond to the closed position. For actuators with fail-safe action: control valve open (OPEN) and for springless actuators, max. signal pressure must be applied to the actuator before aligning the cam disk. Securing the aligned cam disk If you want to additionally secure the cam disk to prevent it from being turned, you must drill a bore into the adapter (36) or the coupling (44) respectively, and install a 2 mm dowel pin. For this purpose, four bore holes are available on the cam disk that are located centrically around the center bore hole. To install the pin, select a suitable bore.

3. Connections 3.1 Pneumatic connections The air connections are either NPT 1/4 or G 1/4 tapped holes. You can use customary screw joints for metal and copper tubes or plastic hoses. Make sure that the supply air is dehumidified and free of oil and dust. Adhere to the maintenance instructions for upstream pressure reducing stations. Thoroughly blow through all air tubes and hoses prior to connecting them. For direct attachment to the Type 3277 Actuator, there is a fixed output pressure connection. For NAMUR attachment, the signal pressure is connected to either the upper or lower diaphragm chamber of the actuator, depending on the actuators fail-safe action, "actuator stem retracts or extends". Exhaust air: Positioners with the model code 3767-x...x. 03 and up are equipped with a hinged cover without an opening for exhaust air. The exhaust air connections for these models are now included in the mounting accessories. For direct positioner attachment, the venting plug is located on the plastic cover of the actuator, for attachment according to NAMUR it is located on the adapter housing and for attachment to rotary actuators on the intermediate piece, i.e. the reversing amplifier. Important: If you intend to replace older models with model codes up to 3767-x...x. 02, you will have to replace the mounting parts as well, if required. 3.1.1 Signal pressure indication For exact positioner adjustment, we recommend that a pressure gauge (direct attachment) or a gauge assembly (NAMUR attachment) for signal pressure indication be attached. These parts are listed as accessories in Table 4, 5 or 7 respectively. 3.1.2 Supply pressure regulator The required supply pressure is dependent on the actuator version used. With "actuator

stem extends" (FA), it should be 0.4 bar above the upper signal pressure range value (see name plate), and with "actuator stem retracts" (FE), it should be 0.4 bar above the required signal pressure (calculated according to section 4.2.3). After tilting the cover plate (9) away, you can adjust the pressure regulator infinitely. When the adjuster is turned all the way to the left, signal pressures for spring ranges are regulated up to 2.5 bar. When the adjuster is turned all the way to the right, signal pressures for spring ranges are regulated up to 6.0 bar. If the signal pressure must not exceed a certain value, this limit value can be regulated by means of a pressure gauge (accessory).

3.2 Electrical connections

For electrical installations, you are required to observe the relevant electrotechnical regulations and the accident prevention regulations of your country. In Germany, these are the VDE regulations and the accident prevention regulations of the liability insurance association. For assembly and installation in hazardous areas, you are required to observe EN 60079-14:1997; VDE 0165 Part 1/8.98. For connection of the intrinsically safe circuits, the Certificate of Conformity applies. 19

Connect the wires for the reference variable to the terminals 11 and 12. A general connection of the positioner to a bonding conductor is not required. Should it be necessary, however, you can connect this conductor either inside or outside of the housing. For Ex plants, refer to VDE 0165, section 5.3.3 . Depending on the model, the positioner is equipped with inductive limit switches and/or a solenoid valve. You cannot use these accessories in positioner versions with position transmitter. The position transmitter is operated in a two-wire circuit. The supply voltage is usually 24 V DC. Under consideration of the resistance of the supply leads, the voltage at the position transmitter terminals must be minimum 12 V and is not to exceed 45 V DC. For terminal assignment, refer to Fig. 10 or the label on the terminal strip. Note on the selection of cables and wires: To run several intrinsically-safe circuits in a multi-core cable, observe the section 12 of EN 60079-14; VDE 0165/8.98. Note especially that for commonly used insulating materials, such as polyethylene, the radial thickness of the conductor insulation must be minimum 0.2 mm. The diameter of a single wire of a flexible conductor must not be

smaller than 0.1 mm. Take care to protect the conductor ends against unlaying, e.g. by using wire end ferrules. For connection via 2 separate cables, you can mount an additional cable gland. Cable gland PG 13.5 Black Order no. 1400-6781 Blue Order no. 1400-6782 Adapter PG 13.5 to 1/2" NPT: Metallic Order no. 1400-7109 Blue finish Order no. 1400-7110 3.2.1 Isolating switch amplifier For operation of the inductive limit switches, isolating switch amplifiers must be connected in the output circuit. Their function is to control the limit values of the control circuit acc. to NAMUR so that operational reliability of the positioner is ensured. If the positioner is installed in hazardous areas, you are required to observe the relevant regulations. For connection to the limit switches we recommend isolating switch amplifiers by "Pepperl und Fuchs".

4. Operation 4.1 Preadjusting the positioner / Type 3277 actuator unit (direct attachment) If you need to check the adjustment of the combined positioner/actuator unit after the reference variable or the signal pressure range has been changed, note that the procedure for the version "actuator stem extends (FA)" is different from that for version "actuator stem retracts (FE)". Proceed as follows: Connect an appropriate current source to the control signal input, a pressure gauge (optional accessory, Table 4) to the signal pressure connection at the connection block, and the supply air to the associated supply air input (note section 3.1.2). Use the enclosed adjustment template to measure the travel (on option also a slide gauge). The template (see Fig. 11) must be placed on the threaded stem of the actuator. Read off the signal pressure range and nominal travel from the name plate. Example: A reference variable of 4 to 20 mA with direct operating direction >> or of 20 to 4 mA with reverse operating direction <> is to be assigned a travel of 0 to 100 % = 15 mm with a signal pressure range of 0.2 to 1 bar.

Set the volume restriction Q (11) to medium (approx. 4 revolutions from the closed position), with large actuators to completely open. Set the Xp-restriction (8) to medium (1/2 revolutions). Check the actuator for vibrations by briefly pressing the diaphragm lever (3), and open the Xp-restriction a bit more, if necessary. Actuator stem extends FA Direct operating direction >>: Adjust the reference variable to 4 mA using the current source. Turn the zero adjustment screw (6.2) until the actuator stem has completely extended and is just starting to retract. Align the adjustment template (Fig. 11) such that the lower travel mark is aligned with the end of the actuator stem. Set the input signal to 20 mA and turn the span adjustment screw (6.1) until the end of the actuator stem is aligned with the upper travel mark. Set the input signal to 4 mA again and turn the zero adjustment screw (6.2) once more until the pressure gauge indicates the lower value of the signal pressure range. Mount the actuator on the control valve as described in section 4.1.1, and adjust it according to section 4.2. Actuator stem extends FA Reverse operating direction <>: Adjust the input signal to 4 mA using the current source. Turn the zero adjustment screw (6.2) until the actuator stem has completely retracted and is just starting to extend. Align the adjustment template (Fig. 11) such that the lower travel mark is aligned with the end of the actuator stem. Set the input signal to 20 mA and turn the span adjustment screw (6.1) until the end of the actuator stem is aligned with the upper travel mark. Leave the input signal at 20 mA and turn the zero adjustment screw (6.2) until the pressure gauge indicates the lower value of the signal 21

pressure range. Mount the actuator to the control valve as described in section 4.1.1, and adjust it according to section 4.2. Actuator stem retracts FE Direct operating direction >>: Adjust the input signal to 4 mA using the current source and turn the zero adjustment screw (6.2) until the actuator stem has completely retracted and is just starting to extend. Align the adjustment template (Fig. 11) such that the lower travel mark is aligned with the end of the actuator stem. Set the input signal to 20 mA, turn the span adjustment screw (6.1) until the end of the actuator stem is aligned with the upper travel mark. Leave the input signal at 20 mA and turn the zero adjustment screw (6.2) until the pressure gauge indicates the upper value of the signal pressure range. Mount actuator on the control valve as described in section 4.1.1, and adjust it according to section 4.2.

Actuator stem retracts FE Reverse operating direction <>: Adjust the input signal to 4 mA using the current source and turn the zero adjustment screw (6.2) until the actuator stem has completely extended and is just starting to retract. Align the adjustment template (Fig. 11) such that the lower travel mark is aligned with the end of the actuator stem. Set the input signal to 20 mA, turn the span adjustment screw (6.1) until the end of the actuator stem is aligned with the upper travel mark. Set the input signal to 4 mA again and turn the zero adjustment screw (6.2) until the pressure gauge indicates the upper value of the signal pressure range. 4.1.1 Mounting the actuator to the valve Loosen coupling nut (48) and lock nut (49) at the plug stem and push the stem into the seat until the plug stop is reached. Screw the coupling and lock nut down the plug stem thread. Place actuator on the valve bonnet and tighten it with a ring nut (46). Connect supply air and electric control signal to the positioner. With "actuator stem extends (FA)", operating direction >> and "actuator stem retracts (FE)", operating direction <>, set the reference variable to the lower range value (4 mA). With "actuator stem extends (FA)", operating direction <>, and "actuator stem retracts (FE)", operating direction >>, set the reference variable to the upper range value (20 mA). Then screw up coupling nut until it touches the actuator stem, and tighten the lock nut (49). Put the coupling halves (47) around the stem and screw them tight. 4.2 Adjusting the positioner at the control valve Starting and reference variable When you adjust the positioner at the control valve assembly, you must adapt the valve travel (opening angle) to the reference variable. With a reference variable of, e.g. 4 to 20 mA, the valve must pass through its entire travel range of 0 to 100 % (Fig. 13). For rotary positioners, you must assign an opening angle of, e.g. 0 to 70 to the reference variable. The starting is defined with regard to the closed position of the valve. Depending on the actuator version ("actuator stem extends (FA)" or "actuator stem retracts (FE)" and the operating direction of the positioner (>> or <>), this starting can be represented by either the lower or upper range value (4 or 20 mA) of the reference variable. The reference variable range and thus the

upper range value determine the travel of the valve. In the case of split-range operation (Fig. 13), the control valves operate with lower reference variables. The controller output signal used for controlling two control valves is divided such that the values pass the complete travel range at half an input signal range each (e.g. first valve set to 4 to 12 mA and second valve to 12 to 20 mA). To avoid overlapping, take a dead band of 0.5 mA into account, as shown in Fig. 13. You can adjust the starting (zero) at screw (6.2), the span and thus the upper range value is adjusted at screw (6.1). For adjustment, connect a suitable current source to the signal input and the supply air to the associated supply air input. Important: When the positioner is controlled by a computer generating a signal limited between, e.g. 4 to 20 mA, it is advisable to set the positioner to the range 4.5 to 20 mA. Only then is it ensured that the actuator is completely vented and that the valve is completely closed at a computer signal of 4 mA. (Accordingly, set range to 4 to 19.5 mA for operating direction <>.) 4.2.1 Adjusting the proportional band Xp and the air delivery Q First, adjust the reference variable to approx. 50 % of its range. Then, turn zero adjustment screw (6.2) until the valve is at about midtravel. Set the volume restriction Q (11) to medium, with large actuators, open completely. Set the proportional band Xp at the adjuster (8) to medium (1/2 revol.). Check the valve for vibrations and the positioning rate by briefly touching the diaphragm lever (3), and readjust the X p-restriction, if necessary. Important: Always adjust the Xp-restriction prior to adjusting the starting point. Later modifications would result in a zero shift!

23

4.2.2 Adjustment with actuator: Actuator stem extends (FA) Starting point (e.g. 4 mA) Set the input signal to 4 mA using a current source. Turn zero adjustment screw (6.2) until the control valve is just leaving the initial position. Take away the input signal and slowly increase it, thereby checking if the valve starts to move at exactly 4 mA. Correct any deviation at the zero adjustment screw (6.2). Upper range value (e.g. 20 mA) After the starting point has been set, increase the input signal to 20 mA using a current source. At exactly 20 mA, the plug stem must stand still and have passed through 100% travel (watch the travel indicator at the valve!). If the upper range value is incorrect, the span adjustment screw (travel) must be turned (4 revolutions equal a travel change of 10 % in standard operation. In split-range operation, this value is halved). The travel decreases if you turn the screw clockwise and it increases if you turn it counterclockwise. After corrections have been made, take away the control signal and increase it again. First, check starting point. Then, check upper range value. Repeat this procedure until both values are correct. Important: When the zero adjustment screw (6.2) is adjusted, check whether the actuator is without pressure. With an input signal of 4 mA and operating direction <>, the pressure gauge must indicate 0 bar. Correct zero accordingly! 4.2.3 Adjustment with actuator: Actuator stem retracts (FE) Important: With actuators "actuator stem retracts (FE)" and at an upper reference variable range value of 20 mA and operating direction >>, and at the lower input range value of 4 mA and operating direction <>, the diaphragm chamber must be provided with a pressure high enough to shut the valve tight, even in the event of an up24

streamsystem pressure. (The required signal pressure can be read off from the label on the positioner.) You can use the following formula to calculate the required signal pressure: Req. signal press. [bar] = d2 p + Fbe + 0.4 4A

d p A Fbe

= = = =

Seat diameter [cm] Differential pressure p1 p2 [bar] Actuator area [cm2] Upper spring range value of the actuator [bar]

If there are no specifications, calculate as follows: Required signal pressure = Upper spring range value + 1 bar Starting point (e.g. 20 mA) Set the input signal to 20 mA using the current source. Turn zero adjustment screw (6.2) until the valve is just leaving the initial position. Increase the input signal and slowly lower it to 20 mA. Check if the valve starts moving at exactly 20 mA. Correct any deviations at the zero adjustment screw (6.2). The valve leaves its end position earlier if you turn the screw counterclockwise and later if you turn it clockwise. Upper (range) value (e.g. 4 mA) After the starting point has been set, increase the input signal to 4 mA using the current source. At exactly 4 mA, the plug stem must stand still and have passed through 100% travel (watch travel indicator at the valve!). If the upper range value is incorrect, the span adjustment screw (travel) must be turned (4 revolutions equal a travel change of 10 % with standard operation. Halve this value for split-range operation.). To decrease the travel, turn the screw clockwise and to increase the travel, turn it counterclockwise. After corrections have been made, reset input signal to 20 mA. Turn the zero adjustment screw (6.2) once more until the gauge indicates the required signal pressure.

Important: After having attached and adjusted the positioner, make sure that the vent plug in the cover is directed downwards when the valve is installed in the plant.

4.3 Changing the operating direction If you want to change the operating direction after it has already been set, you must alter the turnboard (7), the position of the connection block, the positioner and the clamp (1.2) for direct attachment (Fig. 3). In the case of NAMUR attachment, the turnboard (7) and the positioner must be turned at the adapter housing (Fig. 6). For rotary positioners, the cam disk must be assigned anew according to Fig. 9. How to change the position of the turnboard (7) is described in section 2 "Mounting position and operating direction".

25

4.4 Adjusting the limit switches The positioner version with inductive limit switches has two adjustable tags mounted on a rotary axis which operate the associated proximity switches (50). To operate the inductive limit switches, you must connect the corresponding isolating switch amplifier in the output circuit (see section 3.2.1). When the tag (51) is in the inductive field of the switch, the switch assumes a high resistance. When it is no longer in the field, the switch assumes a low resistance. The limit switches are usually adjusted such that they provide a signal in both limit positions. The switches, however, can also be adjusted to signalize intermediate positions. The assignment of the switches A and B must be determined according to Tables 9 and 10. It depends on the operating direction, the mounting position of the positioner, and the limit position of the control valve (either valve Open or Closed). Assignment of the terminal pairs 41/42 and 51/52 to the switches A and B

can be achieved by turning the associated name plate located on the terminal block (see also Fig. 10). Important: Since the tags of the limit switches cannot be turned by 360, proper assignment of the switches A and B to the valve positions Open and Closed must be observed, especially when the limit switches are to be connected in fail-safe circuits. The desired switching function, i.e. whether the output relay must be picked up or released when the tag has entered the field, has to be determined by means of jumpers for either working current or closed circuit current at the isolating switch amplifier. Setting the switching point: Move the valve to the switching position and adjust the tag by turning the adjustment screw (53) in such a way that the switching point is reached and is indicated by the LED at the transistor relay. To ensure safe switching under any conditions, the switching point should be adjusted to a value of approx. 2 % before the mechanical stop (Open Closed).

4.5 Adjusting the position transmitter Important: Prior to adjusting the position transmitter, you have to adjust starting point (zero) and upper range value (span) of the positioner. Depending on the position of the 7-pin plug (symbols on plug facing upwards: >> or <>), you can set the feedback signal to either a range of 4 to 20 mA or 20 to 4 mA for 0 to 100 % travel. Zero point (ZERO) Use switches 1 and 2 to preset the zero point and use the ZERO potentiometer for fine-tuning. The adjusted value is always related to 4 mA. Span (SPAN) Use switches 3 and 4 to preset the span, i.e. the upper range value, and use the SPAN potentiometer for fine-tuning. The adjusted value is always related to 20 mA.

Example: Move valve to the open position, observing the position transmitter signal. If the signal does not move in the desired direction, switch over multipin plug. Then adjust zero point (4 mA) and span (20 mA) for the valve positions according to Table 10. Adjusting the zero point Move valve via the input signal of the positioner to the closed position (valve CLOSED travel 0 %). The ammeter must now indicate a current value of approx. 4 mA. Correct smaller deviations at the ZERO potentiometer until the meter shows exactly 4 mA. If deviations are too high and cannot be adjusted at the potentiometer (adjustment range approx. 20 revolutions), switches 1 and 2 must be set in a way that a mA value is indicated which lies within the adjustment range of the ZERO potentiometer. Subsequently, adjust zero point with the ZERO potentiometer to precisely 4 mA.

Adjusting the span Move valve via input signal of the positioner to the fully opened position (valve OPEN travel 100 %). The ammeter must now indicate a current value of approx. 20 mA. Correct small deviations at the SPAN potentiometer until the ammeter shows exactly 20 mA. If deviations are too high, switches 3 and 4 must be set in a way that a mA value is indicated which is within the adjustment range of the SPAN potentiometer. Subsequently, adjust SPAN potentiometer until the ammeter shows exactly 20 mA. Since the adjustment of zero point and span slightly influence one another, you have to readjust the potentiometer until both values are correct. Note on adjustment of the position transmitter for positioners with NAMUR adapter housing: If the positioner and the position transmitter signal have different operating directions (<< and >>), the zero point of the transmission signal could be unadjustable. This is due to the additional deviation caused by the angle (28) of the adapter housing. If so, readjust the black pointer (chap. 2.2.2 on page 12) so that the sensor of the position transmitter can reach the control range. Proceed as follows: Unscrew the clamping plate. For "Actuator stem extends" FA, shift the pointer in upward direction towards the actuator. For "Actuator stem retracts" FE, shift the pointer in downward direction towards the valve. For valves with rod-type yoke, however, slightly shift the positioner on the rod in upward (FA) or downward (FE) direction. Important: When you perform any of the above changes, zero and span of the positioner require readjustment. This must be done before you calibrate the position transmitter.

29

5. Converting the positioner (Fig. 16) You can convert the electropneumatic positioner to a Type 3766 Pneumatic Positioner using the following conversion kit: Housing with electric connection PG 13.5 Order no. 1400-7115 Remove support with terminal base and disconnect cable to i/p module. Unscrew fastening screws and remove i/p module (6) including seals (7, 8).

Place connecting plate (3) with seal over housing bore holes and screw tight, so that the restriction in the seal is located above the right inside bore hole. Replace cable gland (5) with pneumatic screw gland (1). Connect silicone hose (2) and insert guard plate (4) in the housing. Reattach support with terminal base. Change Type no.
