Introduction
DataresidingwithinVMwarevirtualmachinescanbebackedupusingthreedifferentapproaches: 1 Youcanrunbackupclientsfromwithinavirtualmachineperformingfilelevelorsystemlevelbackups.AsofESX Server2.5.2,abackupclientisassumedtoworkcorrectlyinavirtualmachineaslongastheclienttransfersdata overanEthernetnetworkanddoesnodirecthardwareaccess.Thereforethisdocumentdoesnotprovideexplicit compatibilitylistingsforbackupclientsrunninginvirtualmachinesonESX2.5.2orlater. YoucanrunbackupclientsagentsfromtheESXServerserviceconsole,backingupvirtualmachinesintheir entiretyas.dskand/or.vmdkfilesresidingintheESXServerVMFSfilesystem. Youcanbackupvirtualmachinedatabyrunningabackupserverwithinavirtualmachinethatisconnectedtoa tapedriveorotherSCSIbasedbackupmediaattachedtothephysicalsystem. ThedirectionsforconnectingtheSCSIbackupdevicetoavirtualmachinethroughtheSCSIpassthrough mechanismaredetailedintheESXServerAdministrationGuide.Beforeyoubegin,takenoteofthefollowing restrictions: VMwaresupportsattachingSCSIdrivestotheESXServerusingAdaptecSCSIadapters.Usingotheradapters, suchasLSIMPTFusionSCSI,isnotsupported. Ifusingatapedrivelibrary(versususingastandalonetapedrive),thelibrarymustbemultitarget,andnot multiLUN. SetthetapedrivesvirtualtargetIDinthevirtualmachinesconfigurationtobethesameasthephysicaltarget ID. NOTE ESXServerversions1.xand2.xdonotsupportconnectingfibreattachedtapedrivestotheESXServeror virtualmachines.AttachedtapestorageusingtheAdaptecAHA29xxxadapterseriesistheonlysupported configuration.

Needs client patch from Veritas to work on the service console. Tivoli Storage Manager can be used from within the service console using command line only. Add the following parameter: MAKESPARSEFILE NO to the dsm.opt file found on the service console in the following location: /opt/tivoli/tsm/ client/ba/bin/dsm.opt For Tivoli Storage Manager server version 5.1.7, please use client version 5.1.6.
