PHASE LEARNING PROGRAMME

GEOGRAPHY GRADE 8

GRADE 8
LEARNING OUTCOMES LO 1 GEOGRAPHICAL ENQUIRY The learner will be able to use enquiry skills to investigate geographical and environmental concepts and processes.

MODULE 1
ASSESSMENT STANDARDS

1.1

identifies and selects a variety of geographical and environmental sources that are relevant to the research; interprets information from maps and atlases, as well as graphic and statistical sources; calculates distance from maps and compares it to real distance;

1.2
1.3 1.4

identifies physical features and features created by people and aerial photographs and maps.

GRADE 8
LEARNING OUTCOMES LO 1 GEOGRAPHICAL ENQUIRY The learner will be able to use enquiry skills to investigate geographical and environmental concepts and processes. 1.1

MODULE 2
ASSESSMENT STANDARDS

identifies and selects a variety of geographical and environmental sources relevant to an enquiry [uses fieldwork and other enquiry methods; finds sources]; interprets maps and atlas information, graphical and statistical sources [works with sources]; presents an original idea as part of a answer to the questions posed in the enquiry [answers the questions]; reports on the knowledge gained in the enquiry [communicates the answer].

1.2 1.6

1.7

LO 3 EXPLORING ISSUES (SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL) The learner will be able to make informed decisions about social and environmental issues and problems.

3.1

identifies challenges to societies and settlements associated with the use and abuse of people and natural resources [identifies the issue]; investigates possible ways of reducing resource consumption [makes choices]; makes suggestions to guide sustainable living practices in a particular context [makes choices].

3.3 3.4

GRADE 8
LEARNING OUTCOMES LO 1 GEOGRAPHICAL ENQUIRY The learner will be able to use enquiry skills to investigate geographical and environmental concepts and processes. 1.1

MODULE 3
ASSESSMENT STANDARDS

identifies a variety of geographical and environmental sources that are relevant to research (using field work and other research methods) [finding sources]; interprets information from maps and atlases, as well as graphic and statistical sources [working with sources]; identifies physical and constructed features on aerial and/or orthographic maps of local and other areas [working with sources]; makes observations in the field and records information [working with sources]; reports on information obtained during an investigation by formulating different arguments based on information in the form of maps, diagrams and graphic representations, and uses the computer where possible during the presentation [communicating the answer].

1.4

1.5

1.7

LO 2 GEOGRAPHICAL KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING The learner will be able to demonstrate geographical and environmental knowledge and understanding. 2.1 2.2 identifies and compares different settlement patterns [people and places]; identifies factors that influence the formation of settlement patterns (natural, economic, sociopolitical) [people and resources]; identifies critical factors that have led to changes in the settlement patterns in South Africa, Africa and elsewhere [people and the environment].

2.3

LO 3 EXPLORING ISSUES (SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL) The learner will be able to make informed decisions about social and environmental issues and problems. 3.1 identifies challenges to the communities and settlements that are related to the use and misuse of natural resources by people [identifying the issue]; investigates the unequal distribution of and access to resources in different contexts [factors that affect issues].

asks questions that are relevant for identifying sources; draws conclusions and makes analyses to obtain information from sources such as photographs, maps, atlases, graphs and statistics; correlates information from different sources; reports on knowledge that they have obtained through research, making use of different sources of information.

LO 2 GEOGRAPHICAL KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING The learner will be able to demonstrate geographical and environmental knowledge and understanding. 2.2 identifies ways in which Science and Technology have contributed a positively and negatively influence to development (people and resources.)
