Collocations Break a record Record breaker

Context: The context is breaking records. Students will have the opportunity to break their own records in class with mini competitions. The students will read about a man who breaks records. I will provide the two different forms in several examples a) He broke a record in 2003 He has broken records. b) He has walked 130 km with a bottle of milk on his head. He walked 130 km with a bottle of milk on his head in 1999 c) He has carried a brick with one hand He carried a brick with one hand 11 years ago. Sequence of lesson

Warm up/Introduction: to introduce the lesson to the Eye blinking contest. students. Tell students I can stop blinking (mime) for 20 seconds. Ask them if they can do more than 20 seconds. Instruct: Work with a partner. See if you can do it longer.

Show picture on the board of Usain Bolt at the finishing line at the Pre-Task Olympics.

Elicit 'record' Ask: i) When you do something the best, you have a... ( record) ii) When another person (refer to a student who won) can do it better we say She_____ the record. ( breaks)

Use these two words. What is the name for someone who breaks a record? (record breaker)

What is the book of record holders called? (The Guiness book of world records)

Extensive Reading for students to understand the main Ss look at four different pictures of one record breaker achieving idea of the text 4 different records

Provide comprehension handout. Instructions: Read for two minutes alone. What does this man do?

Ask ss for answers. Tell them to turn paper upside down. (imitate)

Speaking to practice pronunciation

Play recording of the key words pronounced. Re-elicit Write each word on board asking ss for spelling. Ask for stress. Ask for intonation: How would I say these words when I am

surprised? (High or low tone?)

Look at the pictures of Ashrita Furman breaking records. What words do you want to use for each of them. Instruct to work alone. Instruct ss to talk about their words and pictures with partner.

Instructions: Read the article and answer questions on overhead projector. 1) When did he jump a mile on a pogostick? 2) Where did he do that? 3) When and how far did he carry a brick with one hand? Check answers.

Ask class if no.1 is talking about an activity that is finished or not finished? Is it happening now or in the past? Do these sentences show one time or any time?

CCQ to check understanding of grammar concept

Ask: what two patterns do you see? Does your partner agree. ( i) have+ ed verb and ii) verb+ed +time reference)

Ask: Why are there two patterns? Discuss with partner

Check Understanding

Identify what sentence is a completed action and can never happen again? Which one has to do with experience? Which sentence (no 1 or 2) happened earlier than the other? (past simple) What do you understand if there is no specific date or time in

the sentence? If you run everyday to school would you describe the action with the simple present or the past perfect tense? Use a timeline on board if necessary to indicate the earlier tense Controlled Practice using the concept (verb +ed+ time reference)

Model an example. Instructions: Use a tense to finish the given sentences. Check instructions.

Model one question from past tense form Instructions: Make two questions about Ashrita Ask your group (4) your questions.

Conclusion

Correction on any spoken errors heard. Write down errors. Nomina students to come to the board and correct them.
