Presentation
I, alongside the rest of the group, gave a presentation to the rest of the class, a pitch, to tell the class what topic we have chose for the unit, why we chose this topic, and why this topic needs awareness. Looking back at the presentation it now seems as though he had too much information to keep the audience (class) interested, although there was a YouTube video of the Rainbow Project shown in the middle of the presentation to keep the audiences attention. The presentation in question can be found below.

Script
Version 1: My name is Ryan, for years I have lived in this city; I was born and educated here. When I (Age) I came out about my sexuality. I feared what my family would think; I was scared because people in the area dont agree with the thought of gay equality. We are different, a threat, something abnormal to what they know. I didnt know who to turn to, talk to. I felt as if I committed a crime, as if I was on the run. I have discovered that there is social groups in Derry/Londonderry which help young people come to terms with their sexuality. One organisation in particular that has helped me through hard times in my life, The Rainbow Project, an organisation that promotes the health and wellbeing of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Northern Ireland. In the 50s if a man came out as homosexual, they were made to feel inferior by other people. Well respected public figures such as Alan Turing lost their jobs, his respect from other people. Version 2: My name is Ryan, I have lived in this town all of my life, I was born and educated here. When I was (Age) I realised I was gay. I feared what my family would think, I was scared because not a lot of people/heterosexuals agree with the gay community because we are different, a threat, something abnormal to what they know. I didnt know who to turn to, who to talk to, I felt as if I committed a crime, as if I was on the run. I have discovered that there are social groups in Derry which help young people come to terms with their sexuality. So it isnt all bleak for the gay community, so people out there do care. In the 50s if a man came out as homosexual, they were made to feel inferior by other people, even well respected public figures such as Alan Turing, the father of computer science, lost his job, his respect from other people, and was chemically castrated ultimately leading him to take his own life, because he was prosecuted for being who he was, a homosexual. One organisation in particular has helped me through hard times in my life, The Rainbow Project. The Rainbow Project promotes the health and wellbeing of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Northern Ireland. Now we are going to speak to the manager of The Rainbow Project, David McCartney, about the organisation.

Equipment Used
The video camera we used was a JVC camera from the North West Regional College. I used it with a tri-pod and used a mixture of angles. I primarily had a mid-shot from the left hand side while the person was being interviewed, but in some instances I used a smaller digital camera (Canon) on the other side of the room, and used that image when the other person spoke. I used 4 SD memory cards because all in all, I had 3hours of footage! This took a very long time to edit. All the equipment worked great and I didnt encounter any technical problems. In the first interview I used the JVC camera and the Canon digital camera for two different angles. But while I was editing I noticed that the audio from the Canon digital camera wasnt as good, so I scrapped it and used the same audio from the other camera. It took a while to get the interview back in sync with the audio and image. If observed carefully there is a difference in the pixels on the two cameras, with the JVC having a much higher resolution.

Locations
The Rainbow Project, Queen Street We spent most of our time here, all in all about 9 hours over the past 2 months. When we took breaks the Rainbow project staff gave us tea/coffee and were very friendly, it was a very pleasant atmosphere to be in and were very cooperative while answering questions and even gave us their own ideas that would improve the interviews.
Community Centre, Gobnascale The Community Centre where Gerry McLaughlin is based, Gobnascale Derry. Only a small amount of time was spent here, about 1 hour. Not as lively as the Rainbow centre, but still a very friendly atmosphere. Me and Paul Doherty walked the whole way over to Gobnascale after Tech and got the interview with Gerry McLaughlin. He was very friendly and gave us good long answers that gave us options on what to keep in the interview and what to keep out.

Awareness raising, informative, range of services It has a clear vision, makes people more aware of homosexuality I feel that the Rainbow Project was described and explained well
2. Clear Communication
I thought the message was clear to understand to everyone watching and was easy to see how much they help Second interview needs cutaways to reflect story Background noise in voxpops is too loud, although they fit well
3. Appropriateness to Audience
Its appropriate, it lets teens know they arent alone if they are homosexual I thought it gave a good message across, that even though the work they do is great, they need help from more people Civil rights and Alan Turin cutaways would be good to visualize what is being talked about
4. Effectiveness of Techniques Employed
Music good, not overpowering The use of cutaways, interviews and the transitions make this work very well The interviews were quite developed and interesting The interview questions were all relevant, however maybe more cutaways

5. Technical Qualities
The edit was quite smooth and flowing Main interview very clear, speaks of many relevant legal issues The background music works really well, just the background noise in the voxpops was distracting
6. Effectiveness of Content
It gives you a different outlook of on homosexuality The quality was very good and conveyed the message I found out information that I didnt know before because of watching it and how much help they need Plenty of info
7. Impact of Work
More cutaways This will have an impact when they show this to their client The message was well detailed and informative
8. Aesthetic Qualities
Very well shot and intriguing The overall presentation is really good. I think the video flows really well

Editing
Soundtrack: The soundtrack played throughout is a composer and performer called Ludovico Einaudi. He is an Italian pianist that is well known for his soothing music. I thought it was very well fitting for background music because it suited the tempo in the film. We were also planning on using a soundtrack performed by someone from the Rainbow project itself, but at this point we were running out of time to meet the deadline so we had to settle for another soundtrack. Effects:
This is how I added text into the film to give some details about the person speaking. For example David McLaughlin, the Rainbow Project manager.
This is what I used to make a flash effect when switching cameras or scenes. It proved to be effective when used and definitely gave a boost to the quality of the final outcome.
This is a screenshot of all the files that I used throughout the film, the offline files are files that I no longer wanted to use. Aiden Campbell

This is a screenshot of all the codes of the changes that were made. Employing editing and its uses Editing was crucial for the documentary. I used flashes a lot to show that time was passing. I edited it in a way that it was telling a story. The start was very negative based because it started with the origins of homosexuality and how it was not accepted. It then told a story of how it is accepted now and how many attitudes have changed. What I used to edit The software I used was Final Cut Pro. It is very professional software and the basics of it can be very quickly learned. The editing process took a very long time and a lot of thought went into it. Trimming was very vital as it took a huge amount of time out of the final film.

Write Up Report: Aiden Campbell For my Social and Community Action project I was put into a team as the editor and camera operator, then due to the unlikely circumstances had to undertake the roles of producer and director. My roles were very challenging but I still managed to achieve a short documentary on The Rainbow Project of Derry with a lot of help from others in the group. My Objectives for the Group: I had to arrange interviews with the members in The Rainbow Project and then go on to arrange interviews with some of the cities high profile Politicians to gather opinions. I found it very stressful, trying to get in contact with the Politicians and to make suitable interviews that didnt overlap with anything else that I had planned. In one occasion I travelled the whole way across the city to find that the Politician had to go elsewhere when I arrived. I found it very frustrating at times. Once I received the questions, the interviews went pretty straight forward. As editor I found it very tough when it came to editing out what was important and irrelevant to the question, because some of the answers were up to 10minutes long! My Overall Experience: At the start of the project I was very excited because, coming from secondary school I was not used to such practical work. The practical aspect of the course is what I believe to be my best. Although up until half way through the project I didnt enjoy it as much because of all the responsibilities I had to undertake. I now know in future no to volunteer to jobs that are out of my depth, and to spread each of the jobs fairly between each of the group members. Final Evaluation: Towards the end of the semester, the film started to take shape. I found the editing the hardest because I was scared in case I edited out details that were important. At the moment I feel rewarded on the final outcome for my teams efforts and me. I think that I have learnt a lot on this project and now know what to do next time and also what not to do.

Write Up Report: Darren Harkin For my social and community action project I was put into a team as the Scripter and Researcher, my role was to gather information and research, write scripts to give a sense of life, continuity to make the film come to together. The short film for Social action and Community is about an organization, The Rainbow Project, an organization that promotes the health and well-being of gay and bisexual people across Northern Ireland.
What Ive done I created a script for the film, I had to look and the website, Facebook, and visit the organization to get a sense and insight of what I was I was talking about in this dialogue. In the script I had to write this as if I was this boy who struggled in the past with his sexuality, his ups and downs, description of how he felt, and how he came to a solution to finding this organization. In script also, Is a mention of a figure that is Alan Turning, The man known as the father of computer science, whos homosexuality was resulted in a criminal prosecution back in 1952, when being gay was still illegal in the united kingdom. He was treated dreadfully, but he had to accept treatment with female hormones (chemical castration) as an alternative to prison a man who is the reason why the software Apple is called Apple today. My Experience I found my time putting this script and gathering information, quite an experience I learned a bit about team work, working together and independently. I didnt speak much during meetings, but I think I was the one asking the questions, because I wanted to know exactly what I was doing, to make sure I was doing it right. 24
The Rainbow Project
NDCMP-YR1-2011-2012
I am happy with the outcome of the film, but I dont think the group pulled together as much as they should have, as Ive noticed, Ive seen the film but I dont see much of my input in there, I also feel I didnt participate in much as should have either, As I am circling the positives and negatives through my experience, I think it will influence me to work harder next time I am in a team. Film Script Writer Responsibilities Scriptwriters deliver script lines to give a story a sense of life to it. They are the ones that give a story and make research to make the story more realistic and informative. What it Involves Come up with informative and educational stories for the viewers. Write accordance to the vision and instruction of its producers and directors. Give any detailed information and facts about the story. My Experience: Now that the unit complete, looking back I can see that I have gained much experience throughout. As this is the first big project we have done in the course, almost everything I have done I have learnt new. I gained experience in pre-production from storyboards, shot lists etc I have gained experience in production from the filming and acting and I have gained experience in post-production from the editing stage and write-ups etc. I have also learnt that only one person can handle so much in one go, and that is why it is best to have a team in a large project, rather than one person biting off more than they can chew. Although I did do much independent work, I enjoyed working with the team most, as the project would not have been half as good if we did one each. I am thankful for having a great team who helped pick up the pieces if I ever let them fall.

On March 23 we went to an event hosted by Human Rights Activist Peter Tatchell called Gay Rights are Human Rights. At the end of the event our Social Action video was screened. This was a great opportunity as many people got to see our work and it was the perfect place for it to be shown. At the end of the event many people congratulated us on our work including Peter and we received very positive feedback. The college magazine iNews wrote an article about the event. This gave our project even more publicity. The full article can be seen below:
