C.I. Reactive Blue 19 is an extensively used reactive dye, which has excellent color fastness on cotton fabric, especially the fastness to light. The color fixing reaction between C.I. Reactive Blue 19 and cellulosic fibre happens, meanwhile, the hydrolytic actions of vinyl sulfone(II) and water occurs. Because the pH value of reaction solution is an important influential factor to the hydrolysis of reactive dyes, the hydrolysis of C.I. Reactive Blue 19 at different

pH values was investigated by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), thus summing up the effect of pH value on hydrolysis reaction. While the temperature maintaining at 64C, going along with the rising of pH value, the hydrolysis rate of C.I. Reactive Blue 19 increased, which was relatively slow at pH 7.5, and the hydrolysis was perfectly quick when pH value rose to 8.77 and went on came to an end within 5 minutes.

The formation rate of vinyl sulfone(II) the hydrolysis product of C.I. Reactive Blue 19 was relatively slow at pH 7.5, however, vinyl sulfone could stably exist under the condition. The rate was quite fast at pH 8.77 the relative content of vinyl sulfone reached 95% within 5 minutes, and the value descended slowly when time was extended. When pH value went on rising to 10.57, the hydrolytic stability of vinyl sulfone came down remarkably; its relative content immediately reached the maximum value 85% and then began to hydrolyze sharply, which was less than 20% after 60 minutes. Correspondingly, at pH 8.77 the relative content of hydroxyethyl sulfone(III) the hydrolysate of vinyl sulfone was very low and could be neglected, which began to go up when pH value attained 10.57, reaching more than 50% after 3 hours. Besides the pH value, the temperature of

reaction solution has a tremendous effect on the hydrolysis of reactive dyes. The hydrolysis of C.I. Reactive Blue 19 at different temperatures was further studied and compared, finding out that the hydrolysis rate of C.I. Reactive Blue 19 and the formation rate of vinyl sulfone and hydroxyethyl sulfone were all increasing while the temperature was rising. Moreover, sulfatoethyl sulfonyl (I) could stably exist at pH 7.530C, while vinyl sulfone was relatively stable at pH 8.7750C.
