nPreference Dental is offering free
exams, cleanings, fuoride sealants and
fllings to children 14 and under in honor
of national Give Kids A Smile day on
Feb. 3.
From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Preference
Dental, located at 7255 Nine Mile Road
in Mecosta, has about 54 20-minute
slots available to schedule childrens
dental exams. They will not see any
other patients that day.
Dental health also affects the rest of
(childrens) health, said Bonnie Nel-
son, employee at Preference Dental. If
children have a toothache in school, they
cant focus. Its important to teach them
good hygiene.

nMecosta Area Committee invites all
local Mecosta Area veterans to the third
annual Veterans Appreciation Dinner.
The dinner will be held at 4 p.m. on
Sunday, Feb. 19, at the Mecosta VFW
Post on M-20 in Mecosta. Reservations

nNew Hope Snow Stomp 5K and
T.U.F.F. Fitness A Thon for Healthy Hearts
will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on
Feb. 12 at New Hope United Methodist
Church, located on 7296 9 Mile Rd., in
Mecosta.
New Hope UMC and T.U.F.F. Fitness
are teaming up to support Mecosta
County Medical Center Cardiac & Pulmo-
nary Rehab Unit. In honor of National
Heart Month we will be hosting a Snow
Stomp Snow Shoe 5K and for those not
wanting to brave the cold, there will be
an Indoor Fitness A Thon.
No Heart will be Left Behind, we
have something for everybody.
Goodies await participants at the
fnish line including chili, hot chocolate,
and a warm spot around the fre.
Youll also earn yourself a stylish long
sleeve tee for your achievements.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the
race starts at 10 a.m. Participants should
bring their own snowshoes, warm
clothes, gloves, hat, and other warm
essentials.
Cost: $25 minimum, larger donations
always appreciated

With preventative screenings, you
can curb serious health problems

About half of American adults
suffer with at least one chronic con-
dition, such as heart disease, cancer
or diabetes, according to the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC). However, many of these con-
ditions are preventable or can be de-
tected early through check-ups and
screenings, which oftentimes are free
or covered at low costs by most health
plans.
Being proactive by regularly tak-
ing advantage of the availability of
preventive tests can decrease trips
to the doctor or the emergency room
and help detect chronic conditions
before they become serious and re-
quire expensive treatment. To en-
courage their members, many health
insurers offer rewards, such as free or
discounted medications, for taking
these preventive tests. Some plans
also help make it easy for members
to have the screenings by setting up
appointments for them or providing
home test kits.
However, despite these benefts,
there is concern that adults arent get-
ting the preventive care they need for
lifelong health and well-being. Here
are four key areas where Humana
suggests you get preventive care:
1) Cancer. Fewer than half
of adults over age 50 are up to date
with screenings for colorectal can-
cer. However, estimates suggest that
a screening, such as a colonoscopy
recommended every 10 years by the
CDCcould help save more than
18,000 lives annually from colorectal
cancer, the second-leading cause of
U.S. cancer-related deaths.
Additionally, recent studies found
that only half of eligible women in the
U.S. get their recommended annual
mammogram. Mammograms lower
the risk of dying from breast cancer
by 35 percent in women over the age
of 50.
2) Diabetes. Diabetes, which
affects 24 million Americans, is the
leading cause of heart disease, stroke,
blindness, kidney failure and lower-
extremity amputation. With tests
available to monitor for cholesterol,
blood sugar, blood pressure, blind-
ness and foot issues, it is easier than
ever to diagnose diabetes and reduce
the progression of related complica-
tions.
3) Heart and Stroke. Heart
disease and stroke are the frst and
third-leading causes of death, re-
spectively, also accounting for a large
number of disabilities for Americans.
Fortunately, screenings have helped
reduce death rates for both condi-
tions by more than 20 percent since
1999. Cardiovascular screenings ev-
ery fve years to test cholesterol, lipid
and triglyceride levels can help detect
conditions leading to a heart attack or
stroke. It is also important to elimi-
nate smoking, a direct contributor
to heart disease and stroke. Today,
many health plans like Humana offer
help with smoking cessation.
4) Mind/Body. On average,
adults with serious mental illnesses
live 25 years shorter than their coun-
terparts without these illnesses, which
are largely due to preventable condi-
tions. Depression screenings are just
one service designed to help monitor
for serious mental health conditions.
Counseling for alcohol and drug
abuseboth of which can lead to a
wide range of physical, mental and
social problemsis also available.

Pay Attention to Those Who Care
Someone sent me this little quiz. Read the six questions. Think about the answers, but do not try too
hard if you do not know the answers immediately.
1. Name the ve wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last ve Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last ve winners of the Miss America pageant.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decades worth of World Series winners.
Did you know the answers to any of those? I only knew two. The point is this: very few of us remember
the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their elds. But the
applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certicates are buried with
their owners.
Heres another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who helped you in your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difcult time.
3. Name ve people who have taught you something worthwhile.
