INTRODUCTION: Examining the Roles of Correction and Repair in Instructional Practice 1. This assignment requires you to read a journal article, reflect on its ideas and apply them in the language teaching and learning in an ESL environment. 2. The required reading (in PDF) can be downloaded from your course myVLE: Hall, J. K. (2007). Redressing the roles of correction and repair in research on second and foreign language learning, The Modern Language Journal, 91, 511-526. 3. If you do not have any teaching experience, you are required to interview 3 in-service teachers who could assist you by sharing their relevant experiences of teaching in an ESL context in Malaysia. Be sure that each interview lasts for at least 30 minutes. For in-service teachers, you are advised to relate your answers with your own teaching experience. INSTRUCTION: After reading the journal article, complete the following tasks. In her study of the roles of correction and repair in research on second and foreign language learning, Hall (2007: 523) highlights the importance of correction and repair in enabling a more robust understanding of the enterprise of classroom-based language learning. What are the possible implications on language teaching and learning? Support your discussion with suitable examples from an ESL classroom and relevant ideas from at least TWO related studies on second language acquisition (SLA) and language teaching.
