Mission
The Medical Center, as a public, tertiary hospital is so maintained as the peoples partner and improved to provide accessible, quality, cost effective, preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative health care services to the general public, especially the destitute. The institution is also committed to medical, nursing, and allied health education, training and research.

Responsibilities of a Clinical Manager

Utilizes the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as the foundation for nursing practice. Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and others practicing in a Shared Governance model of nursing practice. Directs nursing units and programs. Ensures quality of care to patients and families represents best in class. Develops and monitors programs. Collaborates and assists professional staff and university in statewide regional programs. Promotes satisfaction of internal and external customers. Provides leadership, direction and guidance to assigned staff.

Coordinates and maintains the required training and skills of staff. Implements corrective actions and conducts performance evaluations. Effectively addresses personnel issues in order to promote a productive and healthy work environment. Performs other duties as assigned or required. Implement national nursing standards. Effectively intercede with family and patients and resolve concerns related to the delivery of health care services. Develop, maintain, and evaluate patient/client and staff data collection systems and processes to support the practice of nursing and the delivery of patient care. Collaborate with nursing staff at all levels, interdisciplinary teams, executive officers, and other stakeholders in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services. Develop and implement recruitment and retention programs for staff. Evaluate factors related to safety, outcomes, effectiveness, cost, and social impact when developing and implementing practice innovations. Delegate responsibilities appropriate to licensure, education, and experience of staff. Monitor and evaluate appropriate utilization of staff in collaboration with hospital wide stakeholders. Utilize evidence-based practice to develop and implement standards of practice that guide practice improvement initiatives.

Recognize the diverse skill levels of individual staff members and the unique needs of the patient population when developing staffing plans; ensures level of staffing for the level of acuity is appropriate 24 hours/day. Evaluate staff competency by direct observation, peer review, orientation and employee input, documenting this in the appropriate system. Develop and implement effective educational programs designed to assist the staff in the progression from novice to expert in the care of the patient and family. Operationalize the Shared Governance model of Nursing Practice and integrate point of care staff into decision making.

Responsibilities of a Head Nurse

Assumes the responsibility for the delivery of quality patient care to patients within the unit. 1. Provide nursing standards and policies regarding patient care to guide the staff nurses. 2. They have the responsibility of orienting and updating the staff of the systems and standard of patient care. 3. Responsible for the implementation of the health care programs, and standards of patient care. 4. Assumes the role of patient advocate. 5. Assumes the role of staff members advocate. 6. Acts as liaison with the medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care.

7. Serves as resource person to nursing personnel under him in assessing, planning, implementation and evaluating nursing care provided. 8. Coordinates the patient care with the other members of the health care team. 9. Keeps superior informed regarding problems or issues in patient care. 10. Evaluates the quality of patient care through frequent rounds. 11. Evaluates the nursing standard cyclically to provide development of the new standards of patient care.

Nursing Duties A head nurse is expected to undertake normal nursing duties when staff resources are lacking. Typical duties in this role include monitoring patients' vital signs, administering medication and changing wound dressings. 13. Administration Role A head nurse initiates and maintains work schedules for the nursing staff in her department. In addition to assigning duties and organizing shift patterns, she ensures medical records are securely stored and accurately maintained. 14. Maintaining Standards Head nurses assess general hospital ward areas and patients' rooms to ensure they are kept in a hygienic and comfortable state. They accompany doctors on their rounds of patient visits and take notes of any special instructions with regard to treatment or care changes. Head nurses also ensure all care and treatment activity is carried out in strict accordance with state regulations.

Hospital Inventories Head nurses are responsible for ordering drugs, medical solutions and equipment needed for patient care. They also must keep accurate records of the amounts and types of medication administered to individual patients so they can assess recovery times and speak to physicians about treatment changes when necessary. 16. Staff Supervision A head nurse oversees nurses administering medication to ensure all regimens are in strict accordance with the physician's instructions, as stated on the Career Planner website. Head nurses are ultimately responsible for the quality of the work performed by nursing staff.

Staff Development Head nurses ensure nurses are fully trained and capable of performing the duties assigned to them. They also assist in preparing training materials and techniques for nurses failing to perform their duties correctly and for those recently hired. 18. Patient Complaints Head nurses field complaints from patients or their relatives regarding issues with nursing care or the efficacy of treatment regimens. If a head nurse cannot deal with the complaint herself, she might refer it to the director of nursing or the facility administrator.
