4-H Regional Mini Conference 2012

Who: All 4-H members, leaders, parents and families are invited to join Bristol, Norfolk and Plymouth County 4-H for our annual 4-H conference! What: A day of fun-filled, educational, hands-on learning activities. When: Saturday, February 4, 2012 Registration is in the Lobby from 9:30 to 9:50 am. Workshops from 10 am to 3 pm. Where: Silver Lake Middle School 256 Pembroke Street Kingston, MA 02364 Cost: $10.00 per 4-H member or sibling with a maximum of $30.00 per family; no charge for adults. Please make checks payable to Plymouth County 4-H Advisory Council. Meals: Breakfast coffee and donuts will be for sale in the morning. Boxed lunches will be available for purchase including sandwiches, chips, cookies and drink or please bring your own bag lunch for this event. Snow: If there is a severe storm, we will cancel the event; there is no snow date. Money will not be returned but will be used toward the event next year since materials will have already been purchased. In the event of bad weather, call the Plymouth County 4-H Office at 781-293-3541 and listen to the machine for instructions or visit Plymouth County 4-H on Facebook. Remember that everyone must make their own decisions about whether the roads are safe to travel on based on local conditions and their personal feelings!

Registration forms are accepted until January 30th, but workshops are made on a firstcome, first-serve basis! Get your forms in early for the best chance to get the workshop of your choice!

From the South: Take Rte. 3 North to Exit 10.

YOUTH AND ADULT WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Winning 4-H Presentations: Lean how to put together an award winning visual presentation and have a chance to get all your questions answered. This workshop is for all ages and will be taught by 4-H volunteer Cathy Acampora and 4-H member Cheryl Acampora. Paint a Breyer Horse: In this fun workshop, you will make a breyer horse model. Learn about horse coloring and breeds. Taught by 4-H volunteer Gerri Schell. For ages 9 and up. 4-H Livestock Jeopardy: Livestock Jeopardy is an interactive knowledge game played with buzzers to answer questions about livestock and 4-H in general. Livestock Jeopardy categories are poultry, goat, rabbit, dairy cow, beef cow, swine, sheep and 4-H trivia. Come find out more about Livestock Jeopardy with 4-H volunteer Robin Clapp and even get a chance to play along! For ages 8 and up. Beekeeping and the Environment: This hands-on workshop, taught by 4-H volunteer Susan Whalen, will help participants learn more about beekeeping and how the honeybee lives and produces honey. Also get the chance to roll bees wax into a small candle to take home! For all ages. Chicken and Egg: This workshop is a hands-on presentation of information about eggs and the care of chickens as a hobby, taught by 4-H volunteer Susan Whalen. For ages 5-10. 4-H Finance 101: Learn about 4-H reporting requirements, the tax exempt status of 4-H and the IRS filing requirements, and basic 4-H fiscal procedures. Learn what you need to know and have all your questions answered! Taught by Program Leader Sherrie Guyott, this workshop is for teens and adults. Astronomy: Come explore the basics of astronomy with 4-H Educator Kim Pond and learn about some of the major constellations we see at night while learning how a telescope works. This workshop is for all ages. 4-H 101: For parents and teens, get your questions answered about all things 4-H. What events and fairs are all about and how to get the most out of opportunities for your child. A round table discussion with 4-H Assistant Valerie Schell, and veteran 4-H parents will take place. Balls & Tracks: For ages 8 and up, or younger with an adult partner, use materials to create a series of twists, turns and jumps as you explore the dynamics and scientific principles behind the designs of Olympic ski jumps and amusement park roller coasters. Can you get your skier to jump the highest? Land on target? Whats the biggest loop you can make on your roller coaster? Taught by 4-H member Tyler Crager. My Plate Workshop: A nutrition workshop taught by Extension Educator Andrea Gulizean. Come learn about the new food recommendations and what proper portion size is. Also learn to prepare a healthy snack. For ages 5-9 and ages 9 an up.

4-H Club Officer Training: Taught by 4-H Program Leader Sherrie Guyott, come learn what it takes to be a great club officer and how to run your 4-H business meetings. For youth ages 12 and up. Explore It: Come explore the chemistry of cooking and also learn what it properly takes to make a cake. Taught by 4-H Extension Educator Jay Field. For ages 9 and up. Hippology: Taught by 4-H Leader Priscilla McGilvary, come learn about what this unique part of 4-H Horse Bowl is all about and learn some new horse knowledge. For members 8 and up. Ambassador for Animal Welfare: Every youth exhibitor showing an animal project should understand the purpose of their 4-H project: in this workshop taught by UMass Livestock specialist Carrie Sears, learn the importance of ethics, proper animal handling and management, the difference between animal rights and animal welfare and preparing to be an ambassador for animal agriculture. Outside the Showring: There are numerous opportunities for youth to participate in life skills contests such as public speaking, quiz bowl, judging, fitting teams and promotional contests. We will explore various programs available along with a discussion on what is involved in being selected as a delegate to the Big E 4-H Shows. Former Mass 4-H delegates will share their experiences. Taught by UMass Livestock specialist, Carrie Sears. Records on the Go: This workshop will teach 4-H members and volunteers how to better keep track of your 4-H records year round. Learn tricks to staying organized and up to date. Taught by 4-H leader Dawn Smith and 4-H member Emma Smith. 4-H Plant Science: Participants will learn about what plants need to grow while making a recycled craft. How does this mini green house work? Monitor their plants growth and changes. Taught by 4-H Educator, Kim Pond. Open to all ages. Equine Vet Workshop: Taught by Dr. Mark T. Rilley, DMV, DABVP of the South Shore Equine Clinic will offer a workshop on how to keep your horse/pony healthy. Topics include preventative care, first aid and emergency care. Emergency Preparedness: Taught by 4-H Assistant and 4-H volunteer Valerie Schell. Learn about emergency situations for your animals, especially equine and how to handle barn safety and emergency situations. For youth 10 and up. How to make a 4-H Exhibit: Taught by 4-H Ambassadors, come learn about how to make a proper 4-H display for recruitment events, Exhibit Week contests (Plymouth County), fairs and more! Create and exhibit for your club and help promote 4-H. For ages 12 an up.

4-H Kitchen Chemistry: Learn how to make your own pH paper (indicator) from red cabbage and even form Christmas poinsettias. Introductions to acids and bases using things found in your kitchen. Taught by 4-H Educator Kim Pond, for all ages.

1. Indicate your workshop choice (first, second and third choice) for each period. Write the number 1, 2 or 3 in the small square in each workshop box to indicate your choice of workshop. 2. You must select a workshop for each period for your own age group. Do not select the same workshop more than once! 3. Cost: $10.00 per 4-H member and siblings with a maximum of $30.00 per family. No charge for adults. 4.
