Tyres4U to distribute Pirelli
ormula one tyre supplier, Pirelli, has appointed Tyres4U as its new truck and bus tyre distributor in Australia, effective 1 January. Pirelli has manufactured truck tyres for the past 100 years and is currently the fifth largest global tyre company. Chairman of Pirelli & C. S.p.A., Marco Tronchetti Provera, recently announced plans
to fast forward Pirellis strategy to become the worlds leading premium tyre maker, with capital investment over the next four years of nearly $3 billion. Tyres4U was established over 20 years ago and has 14 distribution centres, with over $50 million worth of tyres in stock. Tyres4U supplies over 200
independent truck tyre dealers, who together form the TEN-24 Truck Tyre Emergency Network. t the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show (TMS), Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) presented the most innovative fleet of vehicles it has ever displayed. The stand focussed on green technologies - especially hybrid systems, and included the world premiere of the new Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid. In line with the shows theme, Power to the Future, MFTBCs presentation underscored the importance of innovative technologies for safeguarding our social and economic future and promoting environmental protection all over the world. MFTBC showcased its pioneering activities in four vehicles. The new Fuso Canter Eco Hybrid
celebrated its world premiere at TMS. Although the vehicle is based on the model launched in 2006, its second generation has been completely revised. The new hybrid truck will initially be launched in Japan, where it will be introduced in spring 2012. The Fuso Canter E-Cell light-duty truck will be presented in Japan for the first time. This CO 2 -free test vehicle is part of Daimler Trucks Shaping Future Transportation initiative, which focuses on reducing pollutants, carbon dioxide, and fuel consumption through the utilization of clean, efficient drive systems and alternative fuels. The Fuso Super Great Eco Hybrid is the first long-distance haulage truck under development for
commercial sale by a Japanese manufacturer. This makes MFTBC one of the worlds first manufacturers to test a hybrid heavy-duty truck for highway use under real-life conditions. The Fuso Super Great HEV test truck allows Daimler Trucks to increase fuel efficiency when compared to conventional dieselpowered vehicles. Another vehicle presented at the TMS was the Aero Queen large travel coach featuring BlueTec technology. All of the models now boast improved fuel economy and already meet the fuel efficiency standard that will go into effect in Japan in 2015. The travel coach combines luxury, efficiency, safety, and functionality.

inners of the inaugural 2011 Australian Road Safety Awards, presented by Caltex, were announced on 23 November, during a National Final and Gala Dinner held in Sydney. At the awards, which are organised by the Fatality Free Friday Road Safety Foundation (FFFRSF), Gold Coast based company, VisionDrive, was named winner of the Innovation category. The company imports and sells in-car technology that teaches safe driving habits, including in-vehicle drive recorders which record video, audio and g-forces all referenced with GPS information (date/time/ speed/location). Marketed as your safe driving partner, the VisionDrive auto blackbox can record and store past driving events in high quality
video. During reckless acceleration, braking and turning, VisionDrive will warn the driver in order to promote safer driving behaviour and prevent the chance of an accident. Chairman of Fatality Free Friday Road Safety Foundation, Russell White, said VisionDrive won the award because the technology is both user-friendly and delivers road safety messages directly to the driver. VisionDrive was a very worthy winner of the Innovation category. The product takes road safety to the coalface, providing an everpresent reminder of the importance of safe driving, said Mr White. FFFRSF launched the Awards program to recognise outstanding achievement and innovation in the area of road safety in Australia.
As well as formally recognising stakeholders commitment to improving road safety outcomes, we hope the Awards will encourage new standards of excellence in the road safety industry and in turn, will act as a catalyst to increase road safety activities across the nation. In total, nine awards were presented on the night from a field of 35 finalists across ten categories.
unday 20 November was World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The day is held each year to remember the millions of people killed and seriously injured in road crashes around the world. The first National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims was marked by British charity RoadPeace in 1993. In 2005, the United Nations agreed to mark the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on the third Sunday in November. This day of remembrance is overseen by the World Health Organisation which acknowledges
that road safety is a significant public health issue. It is estimated that 1.3 million people are killed around the world every year in road crashes. The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) fully endorses the significance of this day and recognises the importance of actively promoting road safety. Deaths on Australian roads have dropped by 17 per cent in the past five years and the number of people aged between 17-25 years killed in road crashes has declined by 21 per cent over the same period. While these figures are
encouraging, road crashes are still killing approximately 1400 people each year and seriously injuring around 32,000. Chairman of the NRSC, Roger Cook, believes that we can still do more to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on our roads. With more commitment to action, Australia can continue to drive down these figures. Australias new ten-year National Road Safety Strategy commenced this year. The strategy sets targets for reducing the annual numbers of deaths and serious injuries on our roads by at least 30 per cent by 2020.
hilip Lovel AM, VTA CEO, and Paul Ryan, National Industrial Advisor, Australian Road Transport Industrial Organisation (ARTIO), attended the TWU Safe Rates Summit in Canberra on 21 November 2011. The Summit was addressed by Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, the Hon. Anthony Albanese and Assistant Treasurer, the Hon. Bill Shorten. The Summit involved a combination of truck drivers, academics and industry representatives who gave their views on safe rates and industry safety.
The main outcome of the Summit was an announcement by Minister Albanese that legislation will be introduced into Federal Parliament on Wednesday 23 November 2011. The legislation will establish a new Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal. The Tribunal is expected to commence on 1 July 2012 and will include members from Fair Work Australia (FWA) along with independent work, health and safety experts. At the Summit, the VTA presented a comprehensive industry position outlining that Safe Rates is about more than just rates. It must be a
safe system, including customers, drivers, operators, roads, vehicles, payments and a system of compliance. Mr Lovel also highlighted the diverse range of industry sectors that need to be considered in any legislation. He said it was clear to the VTA that the Federal Government is taking action on what it considers to be a major community issue and that it will now be up to industry associations to interpret the legislation, work with the TWU and other parties (including Fair Work Australia) to ensure we improve road safety.

he series of exhaust emission regulation changes of the past 20 years have come thick and fast. the latest emission reduction to affect europe will be introduced in 2013. euro 6 sees a reduction in nitrogen oxides allowed and a sizeable tightening on the amount of particulate matter in exhaust gases. Scanias development team in Sodertalje, just outside Stockholm in Sweden, explained to Prime Mover what has had to be done to the engine systems over the line to meet the latest regulations. euro 6 comes into effect as of 1 January 2013 for new models and extends to all truck models in europe on 1 January 2014. Scania has already released some of the new models onto the european truck market in anticipation of some october 2011
governments offering incentives to trucking operators who moved to the cleaner trucks earlier than they are mandated. Low emission incentives were effective in bringing forward the adoption of euro 5 technology in many countries in europe. however, no major european country has yet announced any measure, either reduced road tax or reduced road tolls. the european Union only recently finalised the euro 6 emission level figures first suggested in July 2009, giving truck manufacturers a tight deadline. Apart from the usual limits of allowable pollutants in exhaust gases, a new kind of limit was introduced. this restricts the number of individual particles permitted to be emitted. nitrogen oxides are reduced by 80% when compared to euro 5 levels, down to 0.4g per kilowatt hour. Particulate matter is halved to 0.01g per kilowatt
hour with carbon monoxide unchanged at 1.5 and hydrocarbons reduced by 75% to 0.13. euro 6 has been, and is, a challenge to us, says Bjorn Westman, Scanias engineering Director, head of engine Development. in practice, the mass limit for particulates has made the amount of particulate matter the engines can emit much smaller than the regulators imagined, i think. When we started looking at euro 6, particulate counting was not on the table. Different scenarios with nitrogen oxide levels and particulate matter mass were discussed along with their effects on fuel economy. the politicians set the limits knowing it would drive a 2% fuel economy penalty when compared to continuing with euro 5. it was clear to us it would be possible to achieve half the particular mass emissions without
Tailored FreighT was born Five and a halF years ago when Two besT maTes made The decision To sTarT Their own TransporT business To service The needs oF melbournes Fresh produce markeTs. and according To iTs Founders, The business has been based on qualiTy raTher Than quanTiTy From The very beginning.
As the son of highly regarded horse trainer John Hawkes of Hawkes Racing, Wayne Hawkes was surrounded by trucks from quite a young age and is now a well-known horse trainer himself. Since I was about 10 years of age, I travelled around the country with Goldners Horse Transport from Adelaide and thats how the trucks started for me, says Wayne. I always said I was going to own the biggest and best float company around but that went by the wayside and I became a horse trainer instead, before establishing Tailored Freight, so it all just marries together really well. The opportunity to start Tailored Freight arose when Waynes long time friend, Todd Moraitis, was working for his uncle Nick at the Melbourne fruit market. At the time Todd knew everything there is to know about fruit and vegetables so thats basically how it started, says Wayne, who began Tailored Freight with Todd in mid 2006. The business almost started overnight. Tailored Freight began with four employees and now employs 11. Based near the Argosy both of which still have their place in the fleet today. Before long, the demand placed on the two vehicles had increased and there was a need to implement a third vehicle within the first six months of the companys operations. This year another two vehicles were added to the a new supermarket depot was being built on the Albury and Wodonga border and Todds uncle needed to have some freight transported. Footscray market in Melbourne, Tailored Freight began its life with two B-doubles, towed by a second hand 2005 Mack Vision prime mover and a brand new Freightliner
fleet, bringing the total number of prime movers to five and the total number of trailers up to 11. Tailored Freight now operates nine insulated tautliners and two refrigerated pantech trailers which all operate as B-doubles, servicing the Melbourne, Wodonga and Shepparton districts as well as all the distribution centres in between. Fruit and vegetable cartage accounts for approximately 90 per cent of operations, while general cartage takes up the remaining 10 per cent. And while there has been several opportunities for the company to travel interstate, Wayne says that the companys fleet is geared to service the needs of Victoria. We dont want to be the biggest but we are trying to be the best, he says. It is easy to get too big and lose sight of the big picture. We are quite happy to stay around this sort of number of trucks. Every trailer in the fleet has been manufactured by Freighter, with all but one trailer purchased brand new. The most recent trailer purchased is a second hand Freighter trailer that has been completely refurbished. All vehicles in the fleet operate seven days a week and the business is open every day of the year except for Christmas Day and Good Friday. Horse training is no different to the fruit and vegetable market, it also runs seven days a week so the two work hand in hand, Wayne says.
