TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER

Tarporleys chestnut tree
AT its January meeting, Tarporley Parish Council resolved to accept the kind offer from the owner of the tree to gift it to the village, together with a sum towards its maintenance. Also included is the raised bed in which the tree stands. As the tree has grown over the years it has achieved an almost iconic status, featuring in many views of High Street and forming the centrepiece of the Christmas illuminations.

.and other trees

The Tarporley area appears green and well provided with tree cover. All, however, is not well. Over the years there has been a significant decline in mature tree numbers and relatively little new planting. Disease, accident and pure old age are regular causes of loss. In the former category elms have long gone, oak are threatened by Sudden Oak Death and chestnuts are under attack from Bleeding Canker. This has caused devastation further south and is now apparent in this area. Chestnuts are also being weakened by the attentions of the Leaf Miner. The parish council is also seeing a steady trickle of applications to fell mature trees. Sometimes this is justified and part of a well founded management plan. On the other hand it is often that they are in the way or too near to houses, despite the fact that they were there long before the way or the houses.. Tarporley Opal Club The normal reaction of the parish council when consulted on applications to fell is to request that The volunteers who run the Tarporley one or more replacement trees of native species be Opal Club would like to invite local older planted. The Club brings together 14 people for a Prominent on the residents wish list in the Tarporley Parish Plan was a local produce market. When first established the monthly market was well used. It seems, however, that footfall has declined in recent months, as has the number of traders. Ask the experts at Tarporley Health Store

www.healthstore247.co.uk

I take a daily calcium supplement. Is that all I need to protect my bones? Calcium is indeed a vital nutrient for healthy bones; however it does not work alone. Many other nutrients are required for optimal bone health. If you choose to take a calcium supplement, consider looking for one that combines other bone-supportive nutrients such as magnesium, vitamin D3, vitamin K2, zinc, boron, copper and manganese. Whilst calcium is the most abundant mineral in the bones, its utilisation is dependent upon vitamins D and K. Recent research has highlighted the importance of vitamin K in relation to calcium utilisation, with K2 emerging as having superior bioavailability to K1. Vitamin K2 helps promote the incorporation of calcium into the bone matrix, as well as preventing calcium being deposited in artery walls. Vitamin D3, the most bioavailable form of vitamin D, promotes the transportation of calcium into the bones. Other key bone-building nutrients include zinc, boron, copper and manganese.

As Id rather not use HRT, are there any traditional remedies that can offer relief from menopausal symptoms? Pueraria mirica (also known as Thai Kudzu) is a plant found in Thailand that has for many hundreds of years, been a part of the diet of Thai women. Many women around the world have beneted from the hormone-balancing properties of this herb and more specically, its ability to support women going through the menopause. In a study, women who took PM experienced positive results immediately, and after six months, reported improvements in menopausal symptoms, including hot ushes, night sweats and low mood. Pueraria mirica contains several phytoestrogens (plant oestrogens) including genestein and diadzein, but is the only known source of one particular phytonutrient called miroestrol. Miroestrol is similar to oestriol, a weak oestrogen found in the female body that plays a protective role in health. It is thought that miroestrol occupies the bodys oestrogen receptor sites, resulting in the regulation of oestrogen levels in the body. All these nutrients can be found together in Ultimate Bone Support and PM Phytogen Complex.

TATTENHALL Park Primary School is celebrating after achieving the best Key Stage Two results in the county. The league tables showed that r every child reached the national targets. The school is placed 34th out of over 20,000 nationwide. l CHESHIRE West and Chester Council has to lower the age range at Tattenhall Park Primary School to 3 11 years. A report stated that Tattenhall Park Primary School currently leases one of its classrooms to a local pre-school The Park Preschool and Out of School Club. School governors had formally requested that the Council should consider its request to change the age range from four-11 years to three-11 years, to enable the school to operate a maintained nursery class. The Scottish singer songwriter is set to wing her way to Tarporley to perform in front of VIP and celeb guests on Thursday 16th February. Her performance will be just days before she is presented with a coveted Critics Choice Brit Award. Peckforton owner Chris Naylor is very excited about the event and is pulling out all of the stops to show that his luxury venue is back and better than ever. The castle suffered a suspected arson attack in the early hours of the 19th June. Around a quarter of the castle was damaged but conferences, events and even weddings are going ahead as much to plan as possible. Extensive rebuilding and restoration work has begun, in conjunction with English Heritage with the view to it being reopened in February.

PECKFORTON Castle staff celebrated the end of a turbulent year with a party held at Cruise Nightclub, in Chester, last month. A total of 140 castle staff members attended the staff party and awards, affectionately nicknamed The Peckys, in an Oscars-themed awards ceremony and after party. The event marked the end of a turbulent year for the Castles owners and staff following an arson attack on the castles main function room in June of last year which caused millions of pounds worth of damage. Attendees were greeted by a red carpet and photographer at the exclusively hired Cruise Nightclub and were wined and dined before an informal ceremony and dancing late into the night. MD Chris Naylor, saw the event as an opportunity for all staff to move on from the years tragic events: It was an opportunity for us to mark the end of an unsettled year, to toast our successes, to learn from our mistakes and prepare ourselves to move forward and continue all the hard work we all put in in 2012.

Wine talk
with Gill nicol, from enigma Wine
WouLDnT it be nice to be able to have a couple of glasses of wine of an evening and wake up the day after feeling as clear and fresh as if youd had none. Im finding this more and more difficult, especially with the size of the glasses of wine served in wine bars these days! So this month Im advocating wines with a little less alcohol but with plenty of flavour. The Ogio Frizzante from Tesco (4.99 when on offer) is a semi-sparkling Italian white wine. It is made in this style so that the bubbles dont overpower the delicate flavours. It has subtle floral and orchard fruit aromas on the nose with t. crisp but 370 898 a 01244 m. 07964 588 453 medium dry palate, making it soft but refreshing. Ideal as an aperitif and at just 10.5% e. info@enigmawine.co.uk ABV its very easy to drink and doesnt leave you with a fuzzy head the w. www.enigmawine.co.uk day after! I also enjoy the San Valentin by Torres, which can be bought from Morrisons (6.19 when I last bought it). This is made with the Parellada grape from Cataluna in Spain, one of the main grape varieties used in the famous sparkling wine of this region, Cava. This however, is a still, medium dry style of aromatic white wine again at a relatively low ABV of 11%. It has hints of ripe apple and quince on the nose with a slightly sweet, fresh grape flavour on the palate giving it a somewhat voluptuous texture. Served traditionally with seafood it also pairs nicely with a lighter dessert, such as a fruit tart. This might also be the perfect wine to share on Valentines Day! Finally I recently tried a bottle of what is considered to be the Italian equivalent of Beaujolais Nouveau, called Vino Novello, which translates as young wine. This is a light, fruity red wine made throughout most of Italy and is released in early November each year. Once again relatively light in alcohol, on average 11% and available in many local wine merchants. It is best consumed within the first few months of sale and is considered the ideal accompaniment to chestnuts! So if youre looking for something a bit unusual and of interest, why not try a bottle. TARPORLEY HIGH SCHOOL & S

LAST term the school library was transformed into a busy newsroom as 24 Year 10 English students were involved in a journalism master class courtesy of Peter Henshaw, the Editor of SecEd Magazine. Students were given the challenge to research, interview and write news stories around the topic of cyber bullying with a strict deadline of 2.20pm. In order to secure the most exclusive interviews, students adopted a true journalistic approach with dictaphones and notebooks at the ready whilst interviewing staff.

After working tirelessly throughout their lunch break, as per the working world, students went on to produce some cutting edge and sharply written articles which will now be scrutinised and edited by Peter Henshaw, before publication. This day served as excellent preparation for their upcoming BBC School Report project where students will be writing and producing news for the BBC later this term.

Year 11 students took part in the annual mock interviews hosted by Tarporley Rotary club. There is always a buzz of excitement around school over these days as students experience what is, for the vast majority of them, their first ever formal interview. This year there was an outstanding, record-breaking student attendance of 99.4% The students were highly praised for their punctuality, appearance and interview technique and 13 candidates were selected to receive prizes for their superb efforts. Students were presented with their awards, by members of the Tarporley Rotary Club at a special assembly held last term; Winners were: Gemma Penk (11HH), Fern Gibbon (11RG), Tom Rees (11SB), Henry Heath (11RR), Harry Huxtable (11RG), Abbie Mulherrin (11ER), Kathryn Murie (11HH), Lee Shackleton (11SP), Harriet Farrow (11RG), Alex Law (11SP), Francesca McCready (11HH), Sam Dale (11SP), Ryan Gaskell (11HH) Tarporley High School & 6th Form College would like to thank Tarporley Rotary Club for their ongoing support,

Tribute to school volunteer Barbara Steele

by Sarah Lee, Headteacher It is with very great sadness that we announce the death of Mrs Barbara Steele, who will be remembered fondly by many former students and staff. Mrs Steele began her long association with Tarporley High School as a volunteer, and was then employed from 1974 until her sudden death at the end of the autumn term 2011. She was awarded her MBE for services to education in 2006 (as seen in the photograph above). Her funeral took place at St Helens Church, Tarporley, where family, colleagues and former students of the school joined together to celebrate her life and to say our goodbyes to her. I speak for all of us at the High School when I say how shocked and devastated I was when I heard about her sudden death. Our thoughts now are with her husband and her family as we say goodbye to our most highly distinguished member of staff and a very dear and special person, who will always be in our hearts.

Tarporley Salon celebrates 21 years in business

Enter as strangers - leave as friends

Opened in February 1991 by sisters Stepanie and Karen along with their mother June, Skin Deep is a salon renowned for its client care and expertise. Both sisters trained at the Bretlands Beauty Centre in Tunbridge Wells and have CIDESCO and CIBTAC qualifications. Karen was an international examiner for CIDESCO and CIBTAC and once appeared on Blue Peter. Stepanie was also an international examiner for CIBTAC. Due to the continued success of Skin Deep and commitment to her clients, Stepanie gave up examining a few years ago to focus on the salon. Skin Deep has come a long way over the past 21 years and we would like to thank all of our clients for their continued support during this time and look forward to providing the same relaxing atmosphere for all of your treatments for another 21 years!

Skin Deep was the first Beauty Salon to open in the beautiful village of Tarporley and this year will be celebrating 21 years in business.

We would also like to thank all of our staff, past and present, for their help in making Skin Deep one of a small number of Clarins Gold Salons in the UK and the success it is today. We are a friendly, inviting salon with a dedicated team of fully qualified therapists. You can feel assured that whatever treatment you choose will be carried out to the highest standard with the courtesy and quality that Skin Deep is famous for. Enter as strangers leave as friends

with Angela Bartlett
Q. Im 45 and my skin always look dull and lifeless in the morning, why is that and what can I do about it? A. While you sleep your oil production slows down causing your skin to become drier and because your skin becomes drier it tends to lose water content causing dehydration making it look more dull. Your skin also becomes hotter and more acidic during the night which will also adversely affect the appearance of your skin. Make the most of your skins well earned rest from its daily assault by using a specialized product overnight to increase your skins hydration and luminosity in the morning. Read more about your skin and your bodys Circadian rhythms on the February newsletter page at www.angelabartlett. co.uk Q. I have deep wrinkles forming between my eyebrows which is making me look much older than I am and quite angry for most of the time! Is there anything I can do to get rid of them? A. Once wrinkles have formed there are no creams, lotions or potions that will remove them unfortunately! The only recognized treatment is an injectible wrinkle softening treatment of botulinum toxin. Several treatments may be needed if the wrinkles are deep as it will take time for the collagen to re-establish in these areas for the wrinkle to disappear. Our clients have been really pleased with the effects that these treatments give. As always, wrinkle prevention is the best course of action so make sure you always have a good skin care routine and use a sunscreen on your face all year round.

FOOTBALL TALK... TARPORLEY VICS FC

Vics struggles continue

TARPORLEY Vics First Team have only played twice since the last report and having lost both games they remain seven points adrift of Garswood FC at the foot of Division One of the Cheshire League. Lostock Gralam visited the Flacca and won convincingly by three goals to one. This defeat was expected, due to the level that Lostock are now performing at, however the defeat away at Grappenhall was harder to deal with. The Tarporley Vics players performed well in difficult windy conditions however the usual lack of a threat to the opposition goal resulted in a two-nil score line to Grappenhall. Steve Lloyd, as coach of the Cheshire Leagues representative side, has been able to add Vics player Alex Moores name to his latest squad, along with regulars Nick Abson and Al Rowntree. They will now face the Lincolnshire County League side in the National League Cup on February 11th for a place in the semi finals. Good Luck boys; bring the Cup home to Cheshire. Tarporley Vics Reserves have also completed two games since the last report, losing 2-0 to Bentley FC and drawing 0-0 with MMU Cheshire, and they now lie in 7th position in the Crewe & District League.

l TARPORLEY Vics would like to take this opportunity to thank all its 2011/2012 season sponsors for their continued support; From Peckforton Castles generous support of the new kits, along with their excellent hosting of our Sportsmans Dinner, to the individuals and Businesses who sponsor each and every Home match. We are all extremely grateful for all your generous donations. Can we please ask that we all show the businesses the same support in return? For this season alone the following have all dug deep to sponsor Home matches.
Grappenhall Sports Gamesley FC Capenhurst Lynotype Cheadle Golbourne FC Denton Town FC Billinge FC Garswood FC Styal FC Greenhalls FC Lostock Gralam Knutsford FC Lay Site (Paul Latham) John Pattinson Storm Aviation (Sean Taylor) Stu Hulse @ the Foresters Stu Hulse @ the Foresters Gary Moss & Andrew Slinger @ Brand Vista Rob Rowntree Dave Wright Kenny Hill Colin Lloyd & Saul Dacosta Harewood Phil Evanson (P Evanson Aerials Ltd) Stu Snelson (Apollo Travel)

Peter Willis has kindly supplied us with some vintage pictures from his extensive archive. Left: Mr Desmond and Cherry oBrien who lived at Arderne Hall. Mr oBrien had the old hall demolished and rebuilt a modern structure which is now part of the Portal Golf Course. Cherry oBrien was an actress.

FEBRUARY FLOWERS
February can be a month of contrasts ranging from severe cold to balmy sunny spring weather. Whatever the weather, you should find hellebores, snowdrops and crocuses flowering with the promise of spring around the corner. Winter flowering clematis such as Clematis armandii or Clematis cirrhosa varieties may be starting to flower now. Large plants can be pruned by cutting back old wood to large buds and removing weak or older shoots whilst leaving newer growth. For those who are keen to grow vegetables now is the month to get your seed potatoes and set them out in seed trays in a cool light place to chit. This starts the new shoots growing ready to plant out in March. If you want lovely new potatoes in June, then choose a first early variety such as accent or for later, try Kestrel. you can also warm the soil where they are intended to grow by covering it with black plastic. This will raise the temperature of the soil slightly and you can plant the potatoes through holes cut in the plastic. another growing

GardeninG by Janet HeatH

method is to plant 3 seed potatoes in a large robust plastic bag situated outdoors, in which you have placed potting compost such as John Innes No 3. as the shoots grow up, add more compost and keep well watered then be ready to harvest when the first flowers grow. You can buy potato planting grow sacks or kits if you do not have enough space in the garden to grow potatoes. by late February you can plant seeds of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers indoors and get the seedlings growing ready for transplanting into a greenhouse or outdoors in sheltered spots. I grow tomatoes outdoors and find that they do ripen by the early autumn if you are prepared to wait. you can continue to ripen green tomatoes indoors in October provided they are in a warm place. My favourite varieties are Sweet Million for tasty cherry tomatoes, Outdoor Girl or for a change of colour any of the yellow varieties. There are some tomato varieties that do well in pots or hanging baskets such as Tumbler, Tumbling Tom (red and yellow) or Garden Pearl so try planting a tomato in with your petunias this year!
