I am Diona Danelyn S. Dionisio, Registered Nurse in the Philippines. I passed the Nursing Licensure Exam last December 2012 with a fairly decent rating of 83.40%. I graduated from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (University of the City of Manila), which has one of the most reputable and top performing Nursing Colleges in the Philippines as evidenced by its consistent remarkable performance in the Board Examination. As a novice nurse, I am honored to have worked as a R.N. Resident in Philippine Airforce General Hospital and have been exposed in various areas where I utilized my professional skills and improved them. I learned a lot from my experience and actually enjoyed the challenging environment of the hospital. During my residency, were not only encouraged to enhance our skills as a nurse but were also challenged to use and further improve our theoretical knowledge by handling, studying complex cases and even plan and anticipate effective nursing interventions appropriate for the patients. As one competitive nurse, I am willing to take risks to jumpstart my career. I know, right now, I dont have that much of an experience, but I am not giving up in pursuing my dreams and be a successful health care provider I really wanted to be. As the nursing industry continues to be more challenging, I on the other hand, wont let it discourage me but Id rather push myself beyond limits and take whatever opportunity there is to succeed in my chosen career.

Why did you choose to work in the [medical field] profession? I choose to work in a medical field profession because I believe that I can utilize what Ive learned and challenge myself even more with new experiences as I render safe, effective and efficient service to the public.

Is the expanding role of nurses a benefit or a danger to the medical profession? In my point of view, the expanding role of nurses is a benefit to the medical profession because it could help and improve collaborative management towards meeting effective medical and nursing interventions and goals.

In what ways do you take the Hippocratic Oath to heart? The Hippocratic Oath is very vital for health care providers like me. It should be always taken to heart whenever youre practicing in your field of profession because it serves as your personal protection to your

profession and license and as well as the number one concern of all health care providers, patients safety.

There is a patient that is verbally abusive. What do you do? When it comes to verbally abusive patients, you must treat them in a calm, assertive, empathetic and professional manner. First, I would personally ask the patient about his/her concerns and respond politely with respect. I believe that if you show respect to other people, they will give back the respect you deserve to be getting.

What skills have you learned that you feel will help you work in the healthcare field?
There are a lot of experiences that I could consider that would be a great help in the healthcare field. Basic and complex technical nursing skills that are usually rendered in he ER, ICU and Medica;Surgical fields. Its also vital to possess comprehensive history taking, in-depth assessment, critical thinking skills, effective nursepatient communication skills and a lot more.

How confident are you in your interpersonal skills?


Im pretty much confident with my interpersonal skills. I have experienced handling different kinds of patients and I honestly think I have been an effective communicator with all of them. What makes it easier for me is to always think about being empathetic. Seeing yourself in the patients situation makes you a more effective nurse and youll definitely understand the patient more.

Are you comfortable around people with serious illnesses?


Professionally, I have to be comfortable with any patient that I will encounter in this profession and I think patients with serious illness needs more attention, care and empathy. Our role as nurses isnt supposed to be skills-oriented nor personally-oriented; it should be patient-oriented. Were in this field to provide care and help improve the patients condition

Are you comfortable with the idea that you might see death?

To be honest, I have experienced a patient died during my shift back when I was still a Student Nurse. Well I have to say its not really a good feeling. You see crying relatives and you just have to keep your emotions aside and stay strong. In this field, people live, people die. Were dealing with actual life, and its just part of it. Death is inevitable. Thats why as health care providers, we should be extra careful and meticulous, because its a persons life thats at stake.

How are you at dealing with diverse populations?

Often times we will need you to be on call at all hours of the day. Can you handle that?
