Moralersandvolunteersprovidenecessary supportatthemarathon

Moralers and Volunteers serveasavitalpartoftheUNC DanceMarathoncommunity. The week of Jan. 1620, members of the UNC community, as well as the outside community, were recruitedtoserveasmoralers and volunteers during Morale and Volunteer Recruitment Week. Individuals could sign upinthePitoronline. Moralers and volunteers pledgetostandfortheentirety oftheirshift.Thisallowsthose that are unable to commit to dancing to be involved at the marathon. Moralersservesix-hourshifts, with the option of signing up for four shifts. Moralers raise $60fortheirfirstshiftand$30 foreachadditionalshift.Each shift has its own theme and moralersdressaccordingly. [Moralers] provide a new burst of energy and serve to support the dancers in their 24-hour stand, said Morale chairMaggieRiddell.

Volunteers raise $20 for a three-hour shift and an additional $10 for each extra shift. Volunteers help with thelogisticsofthemarathon. Responsibilities can include serving meals or leading dancerstooutsideeventssuch as the lunch break on Hooker Fields. Chelsea Dulaney, a sophomore in the School of Journalism and Mass

Communication, signed up to bothmoraleandvolunteerfor herfirstmarathon. I think its going to be a really powerful experience to be around people so determined to help kids and who are willing to stand up for 24 hours straight -- thats somethingIwanttobeapart of,Dulaneysaid. Senior Donald Cooley has been involved with UNC-DM

for four years. He admires the work of moralers and volunteers. We appreciate those who serve as moralers and volunteersbecause we all haveagoaltoaccomplishand that is to run an efficient yet fun marathon devoted solely to helping the kids and their families,hesaid. Sonya Rice has also been involved with UNC-DM for fouryears.Bothgroupsraise money for the marathon . . . and contribute significantly to the marathon running smoothly,shesaid. WillThomason,aseniormorale captain, said moralers and volunteershavesignificantroles. Without [moralers and volunteers],wewouldhaveless dancersexcitedandwillingto stand[atthemarathonforthe entire] 24 hours, and would not have anyone to set-up food, help with facilities and keep the marathon running, Thomasonsaid.

OfallthepeoplewhomaketheUNC Dance Marathon a success every year, no group understands how much work isrequiredtopulloffthe24hourevent quite like the Overall Committee. Diane Morris, a senior and this years Entertainment committee chair, is a unC-dM CoMMIttee ChaIrMan greatexampleofthesepassionateand UNC-DM COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN dedicatedteammembers. BYEMILYEVANS Morris almost missed her chance to get involved with UNC-DM as a first-year. After throwing away a flyer someone handed her in the Pit advertising Committee Recruitment Week, she couldnt get the marathon out of her mind. I figured I may as welllearnaboutUNC-DMandtryitout. SoIappliedandgotontheOperations committee,myfirstchoice,shesaid. ImsogladIendedupactuallypaying attentiontothatflyer. After being a part of the Operations committee,Morrisbecameasub-chair for the committee and worked as the marathonsvolunteercoordinator.Even PHOTO UNC-DM PUBLICITY | Entertainment Chair Diane Morris enjoys whileabroadherjunioryear,shekept this years Benefit Reception with fellow members of the Overall UNC-DM in mind, working hard at the Committee. marathon in February once she made thetripbacktoChapelHillfromFrance. These experiences encouraged Morris to apply for the Overall Committee her senior year. When it came down to it, I decided that I should apply. I reallystartedtoappreciatewhatIhad learnedduringmythreeyearsofbeing involved,Morrisexplained.

The hospital was one of Morriss biggestinspirations.Ihadlearned how to get people excited and howtomotivatethemtohelpsuch an amazing cause. I had learned about the amazing work we do at thehospital.Andthebiggestthing I had learned was about myself - thatIcarrythispassionandenergy and love for the kids with me all the time. When I realized that, I couldntnotapply. Now, Morris says she absolutely loves heading the Entertainment committee. I get to use the logistical knowledge of the marathonthatIvegainedoverthe lastthreeyearsaswellasalotof creativity.Itstheperfectmix. Though serving on the Overall Committee is a large commitment of both time and effort, Morris says the group is tight-knit and supportive of each other -- and thatmakesitwellworthit. I am so inspired by the other members of the OC, she said. We get to work together so much on so many things - weve canned together, Pit sat, helped to recruit over 2,000 dancers, bagged groceries at Whole Foods on our five percent day the list goes on and on. DEDICATION:Hospital Committee member witnesses UNC-DMs impact


Smith, who is the hospital events sub-chair of the Hospitalcommittee. AccordingtoSmith,working at the hospital makes the stories of the hardships patients and families face in the hospital real. "It's really different when you see the kidswiththeirparentsattheir bedsides -- this is everyday, shesaid.I'llbeinthehospital 12hoursandthencomehome exhausted -- but that's only 12 hours. Parents are there nonstop." Smithhasbeeninvolvedwith UNC-DM since she was a firstyear.Shebeganherjourneyon the Outreach committee and as a sophomore worked as a sub-chair for the committee. Onceshefoundherpassionfor nursing,shebeganvolunteering inthepediatricplayroomonce a week for about a year and ahalf.Shethensignedupfor theHospitalcommittee,which shehelpsleadtoday. Smith said as a nursing student,it'shardtonotwantto joinUNC-DM'sefforts.Working inthehospitalhaschangedher ownperspectiveofUNC-DM. "Before I started nursing, I felt UNC-DM was very objective.Nowinsteadofjust talkingaboutwhatwe'redoing forthehospital,Iactuallyget to see things working in the hospital. I get more excited formeetings." Now whenever Smith hears aboutanewinitiativeorlearns about a way in which UNCDM is supporting the hospital, she anticipates witnessing its implementation or use. "It means a lot more being in the hospital. When you don't directly see things occurring, itdistancesyoufromthecause andcanalmostmakeyounumb to what UNC-DM actually is," shesaid."Beinginthehospital has brought me back to the heartofourmissionandwhyI gotinvolvedinthefirstplace." Smith's initial desire for involvement started because of her sister, former UNCDM dancer Natalie Smith. Smith visited her sister at the marathon, and when she walkedintothegymand"saw everyone freaking out," she thought to herself, "What is thisfor?Whatmeritsthistype of craziness?" Once her sister explained it to her, Smith promised herself she would get involved when she was a studentatUNC. Now, three years later, she istheonewhoplansUNC-DM's hospitalsocials. "It's been really cool to see people playing with kids and running after them [at the socials]. I love when I see peoplewalkingaroundcampus who you would never think thatlayingonthefloorcoloring withakidwouldbetheirkind offun,Smithsaid.It'sgreat to see people's faces light up as they paint kids faces or interact with them. The kids and volunteering can bring outtheothersideinpeople. When looking toward the marathon, Smith is especially excitedtomeetthekids."I'm

A UNC Dance Marathon hospital volunteer cannot wear jeans, must take off jewelry,wearclosed-toeshoes and sport a UNC-DM t-shirt. But junior Olivia Smith wears scrubs. UNC-DM volunteer opportunitiessuchaspediatric playroom, Healthy Steps and Parents Night Out are no longer her only opportunities to interact with the patients andfamiliesofN.C.Children's Hospital -- she holds plenty of hands, witnesses countless smiles and impacts several lives weekly during her 12hourpediatricclinicalshiftsin thehospital. ThefundsraisedbyUNCDanceMarathon havefarreachingeffectsatN.C.Childrens Hospital,farbeyondtheinfamousForthe KidsFund.Thismonthwearehighlighting the Patient and Family Resource Library attheInpatientPediatricEatingDisorders UnitinN.C.ChildrensHospital. Thelibrary,establishedinAugust2011, isfundedentirelybyUNC-DM. Withoutitscontributions,thisresource would not exist, said Kelley Marrale, a recreational therapist with the UNC Hospitals Eating Disorders Program. Marrale, along with her colleague Rose Gray,cameupwiththeideaforalibrary afterseeingthesuccessofasimilarlibrary inthehospitalsoncologyunit. The library contains eating-disorderrelated information and resources in a varietyofforms,includingbooks,CDsand DVDs that are available to patients and familymembers.Italsocontainspositive affirmationbooks,relaxationtools,games andpuzzles. Before the existence of the library, patients would ask to borrow our department resources and would inquire of additional educational material, Marralesaid.Unfortunately,wedidnot have the resources to provide for the need, thus, the proposal for the Patient andFamilyResourceLibrary.

Thelibraryhelpsaugmenttheservices offeredthroughtheEatingDisorderUnit, Marralesaid.Shealsosaidtheresources allow patients to make use of their free time between scheduled programs. Patientscanselectappropriateresources according to their own interests. The library also provides parents and family members with materials that emphasize their important role in the recovery processoftheirlovedones. Marrale said since the librarys establishment it has garnered lots of positivefeedback.Over100patientsand familiesvisitedthelibrarythisyear. Thelibraryisuseddailyandmanyofits visitorsleavebehindtheirgratificationon commentcards.Thankyouforallowing metoreadthisbookandgetgreatquotes tohelpmewhenIgethomeandthrough life,onepatientwrote.Ithinkthelibrary has some very useful tools with helping meinmyeatingdisorderrecovery,wrote another. This book makes you not feel soalone,anotheradded.Itwasniceto readasuccessstory,yetanotherwrote. Marralesaidthelibraryhasbeenagreat tool in helping the patients and families whoworkwiththeEatingDisordersUnit. We are so appreciative of UNC-DMs contributionsandextendourgratitudeto yourgroup,saidMarrale.

Danny is 17 years old and has cystic fibrosis. He lives with his two older sisters,hisbrother-in-lawandhismother whoisdisabled. Thefamilyhaslittleincome.Dannyand hismomreceiveSupplementalSecurity Income and his sisters and brother-inlaw work minimum-wage jobs. With therecentlossinfundingforChildrens Special Health Services, Dannys family has to pay out of pocket for vitamins thatwerepreviouslycovered. Danny also relies on a nebulizer and a chest physiotherapy vest both of whichrequireelectricity.Thefamilyhas haddifficultypayingtheelectricalbill. TheFortheKidsFundpaidforaportion oftheelectricalbill,keepingthefamily from avoiding service termination and ensuringthatDannycontinuestoreceive themedicaltreatmentsthatheneeds. social

working just as hard as I am to makethisyearandthismarathonthebest oneyet. As the marathon gets closer, Morris and the rest of the OC will be working diligently to hammer down every last detailoftheiryearlongplanstomakethe crazy24hoursinFetzerGymasuccess. Butitsguaranteedtheywilltaketime to reflect on and appreciate the cause theyareworkingfortogether.Andwhen itsallover,Morrissaysshellneverforget everythingsheslearnedandexperienced throughUNC-DM. UNC-DMhastaughtmewhatitmeans to work hard for what you love. It has beenthemostmeaningfulexperienceof mytimeatUNC,andIknowthatwhenI lookbackonmyfouryearsasaCarolina student,Iwillbesoproudtohavespent much of that time working for such a greatcause,shesaid.
