On the importance of promoting the arts in our county, I am excited that our executive director Meri Mass has been elected to the Americans for the Arts Private Sector Business Council on the Arts in Washington DC and NYC. This is a great opportunity for Polk County to be on a national platform, to be involved with the AFTA initiative, the pARTnership Movement, and to be involved with some of the best and brightest in the arts and business community. This partnership will help PAA bring awareness of what our creative industry sector has to offer and to promote the cultural arts and educational opportunities that exist in our communities. This is an exciting time to be President of the Polk Arts Alliance and I look forward to promoting and participating in our vast cultural arts initiatives. Dan Clark

CARP Awards
Community Arts Recognition Program Awards Announced
Polk Arts Alliance, Polk Countys official Local Arts Agency, presented the 5th Annual Community Arts Recognition Program Awards at a reception on Thursday evening, December 15 at The Lakeland Center. The awards, given on behalf of the PAA Board of Directors and the Cultural Arts Council, honor and recognize individuals who generously give of themselves to support the arts in Polk County. PAA, whose mission is to cultivate an environment for the arts to flourish in Polk County, is excited that this years program recognizes the investment, partnership, support and stewardship from volunteers and the business community across the entire County in support of the arts. This program was created to show how much the Polk Arts Alliance and the Cultural Arts Council appreciate the contributions community members make in our lives through their support of the arts. Nine honorees who passionately invest their time and commitment to cultural arts organizations and events were selected. We are better off as a community because of these individuals and we are truly grateful for their tremendous effort. Nominations were completed by their direct nonprofit arts organization recipients and in some cases by community members who are just so thankful for the work of these individuals. Nine individuals were honored this year: Kay Hutzelman on behalf of the Ramon Theater, Nancy Hale Hoyt on behalf of Polk Arts Alliance and the Cultural Arts Council, Vicky Luffman on behalf of Arts on the Park, Bob Milligan representing the Polk County Advertising Federation on behalf of Polk Arts Alliance, Marilyn Newell on behalf of Nancy Hale Hoyt and Lake Wales Arts Council, Cheryl Scanlan on behalf of The Ritz Theatre, Joe Tedder on behalf of Kids Tag Art and Polk County Schools, Rob Tritton on behalf of Platform Art, Mike LaPan on behalf of the Polk Arts Alliance and the Cultural Arts Council. PAA is pleased to celebrate those whose dedication, hard work, passion and support, help make quality and accessible arts available throughout Polk County. Local artist Randy Glotfelty was chosen to create original works of ceramic art for each honoree. The CARP Awards reception was sponsored by Allen & Company.

MUSEUM HoUrS

Sketches & Steel,

olk Museum of Art proudly welcomes an exhibition of internationally renowned American sculptor Albert Paleys artwork this spring. The exhibition, Sketches & Steel, will be on view March 31 to June 23 in the Dorothy Jenkins and Emily S. Macey Galleries. Paley is best known locally for Tribute to Volunteerism, the brightly colored sculpture that graces the Lake Mirror Promenade. He also created Splayed Bench, the steel and mahogany bench that sits in the Museum lobby.

MUSEUM AdMiSSion

Works by Albert Paley

Paleys use of steel can be described as industrial poetry. His large sculptures combine an apparent heaviness with an almost lost sense of gravity as unfurled and animate forms construct massive works of art. Those who view his artwork often are surprised to learn that Paley completes for each piece a planning process that includes an abundance of preliminary sketches and cardboard models. This exhibition will focus on both sides of Paleys creative process: the plan and the end product. His steel sculptures will be on view alongside the initial sketches Paley produced to create the sculptures. By understanding Paleys process, viewers will gain a new perspective on his constructed steel creations. The Museum will honor Paley with a Lifetime Achievement Award on March 29. For more information on sponsorships or reservations, please call 863.688.7743, ext. 240. In addition, Paley will be at the Museum through the weekend to speak at the opening reception for his exhibition. The Sketches & Steel exhibition will be celebrated at a reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, March 30. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the artist will lecture beginning at 6. A reception featuring light hors doeuvres and a cash bar begins at 7 p.m. Members are admitted for free; guests are welcome at $10.

News from

FROSTPROOF ART LEAGUE & GALLERY

Spring has sprung at Frostproof Art League. The snowbirds are here and its a busy time of year. FEBRUARY brings Cathy Futral, who teaches her watercolor workshop on February 21 and 28. Cathy is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable teacher who fills the room with students every year. MARCH brings the Annual Quilt Show, the 3-D Art Show and of course our famous Wearable Art Show. The Wearable Art Show is Tuesday, March 13th at 1pm. The show concept is to take something from your closet or go to the Care Center, a faith-based thrift store, and find something that could be great if it just had that extra something. Past participants have painted on fabric, used decorations to cover stains or repairs, cut down and restructured clothing, added bling, embroidered, embellished and accessorized to make something over the top. Many talented people participate. Their skills and method of work vary greatly. Some are skilled with a sewing machine and others with a paint brush. The variety of creations combines to make a fabulous show. Many of our patrons mark the Wearable Art Show onto their calendar every year so they dont miss it. The 3-D Art Show is a juried show that runs the entire month of March. The show includes fabric art, decorative painting, sculptures, carving, found objects, generally anything that is not 2-D. The Quilt Show also runs in the Gallery throughout March. This is not a juried show. Our ladies display their favorite quilts everything from antique, family heirlooms to modern art quilts. APRIL brings the Student Art Show. We have fabulous art on display from students in kindergarten through senior high school. All the art is judged and elementary students get participation ribbons. The kids have wonderful imaginations and are so much less inhibited in their work than adults. The high school art is judged with the usual standards, and first, second and third place ribbons as well as Best of Show are awarded. A scholarship is awarded to a 12th Grade student who is going to study art. The youngest students are always thrilled to see their art work displayed in a show. The encouragement they receive from the show is amazing. Visit the Frostproof Art League & Gallery at 12 E. Wall St, in Frostproof. Find Frostproof Art League & Gallery on facebook or call (863)-635-7271 for more information.

Jos Ramos Photographer in Residence

os M. Ramos, nationally known aviation photographer, joined the SUN n FUN Marketing Communication team in September, 2011 as Sun n FUNs Photographer in Residence. Jos began documenting military aviation at the age of 18 and, for the past 22 years, has been photographing military aviation subjects all over the United States for various international media outlets, as well as the military itself. His first air-to-air photo assignment was in the F-14 Tomcat covering training operations at NAS Key West in 1997. Jos has logged flight time in almost every tactical aircraft type in the U.S. Navy inventory and is an honorary member of Fighter Squadron Composite One Eleven, the Sun Downers, at NAS Key West. Raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Jos picked up his first camera, Kodak X-15, at an early age and has been snapping images ever since. He attributes the greatest influences for his aviation work to the late George Hall, CJ Heater Heatley, Edward Steichen and Katsuhiko Tokunaga. Joss fascination with aviation started at an early age listening to his fathers stories of flying with the Cuban Army Air Corps during the1950s and served as a basis for his passion for military aircraft and deep respect for the men and women who fly them.He continually strives to engage the public in aviation through his work by putting the viewer in the midst of the action. As a resident of Lakeland since 1991, Jos has been no stranger to SUN n FUN. In recent years, hes not only volunteered his photographic services during the annual Fly-In & Expo, but for the past three years has co-hosted the SUN n FUN photo contest on behalf of Nikon Professional Services, for whom he is also a contract representative at various events across the country. See page 16 of Art-i-facts to learn more about this years SUN n FUN Nikon Photo Contest during the SUN n FUN International Fly-in & Expo, in Lakeland, March 27-April 1, 2012. The annual event is the primary source of funding for an expanding schedule of yearround, aviation-oriented education programs offered through the Florida Air Museum (FAM), a separate 501(c) (3), named the statesOfficial Aviation Museum and Education Center by the Florida legislature in 2003. A growing scholarship program provides financial support to ensure these education programs are accessible to all.

Florida Citrus Hall Of Fame

Kicks Off 50th Anniversary at

Arts on the Park

Historic Citrus Exhibit and Crate Label Show through February 18th

he Florida Citrus Hall of Fame celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year and recently launched an historic citrus exhibit at Arts on the Park in downtown Lakeland, to kick off their Golden Jubilee year. The exhibit opened on Friday, January 6, 2012 during Lakelands First Friday celebration and featured a Florida Citrus Crate Label Show & Sale. Approximately 500 people visited the exhibit, which showcased a timeline of Floridas citrus industry and included various vignettes of antique equipment and artifacts. Videos of old citrus commercials from the Anita Bryant era were also on display, as were people serving complimentary juice costumed in everything from vintage orange-motif dresses to Mr. Juice Man. In addition, citrus label collectors from across the State were on hand selling original labels that once graced the ends of the wooden citrus crates that were used to ship Florida citrus. The exhibit was coordinated by LuAnn Mims, archivist for the State of Florida Citrus Archives at Florida Southern College, and assembled with the help of Florida Southern students involved in the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame Fellowship Program. Made possible through the support of the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame, Florida Southern College, HESCO, MacroPlastics and Noble Juices, the exhibit remains at Arts on the Park, located at 115 N. Kentucky Avenue in Lakeland, through February 18, 2012. The Florida Citrus Hall of Fame was created in 1962 to honor distinguished leaders who have made significant contributions to the Florida citrus industry. During the first year, 17 people were inducted to the Hall of Fame, and 50 years later that number has grown to 167 members. In 2008, the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame created a partnership with Florida Southern College (FSC), in Lakeland, to house the Hall of Fame Archives and to help catalog, preserve and digitize citrus memorabilia and artifacts for inclusion in the State of Florida Citrus Archives. The Florida Citrus Hall of Fame Display and Citrus Archives Center is located within the McKay Archive Building at Florida Southern College, 111 Lake Hollingsworth Drive in Lakeland.

Polk County

Historical Museum
& New Exhibit: Polk in the War Between the States
The spring calendar at the Polk County Historical Museum includes a cattle drive, and a new exhibit Polk in the War Between the States. On April 12, 1861, when the Civil War began, Polk County was among the most remote areas of land in the Southern United States. Still many of the ablebodied men of Polk answered the first call for volunteers. Defending hearth and home against aggression was an age old honored tradition. Floridians paid a high price for their service in the Civil War. Approximately 5000 Floridians, one out of every three in the military, died or were killed fighting for the Confederacy, the highest percentage of any state, north or south. The exhibit opens February 14, 2012. Our final event for the celebration of Polks 150th anniversary year will feature the dedication of a new outdoor Cow Camp classroom on February 25, 2012 at the Circle B Bar Reserve. The special event includes a family picnic; cattle drive reenactment, and historical music.

Cattle Drive

Photos: Courtesy: Florida State Archives Cracker Cow The first cattle in Polk were descendants of the breed first imported to Florida in the 1500s by the Spanish. Portrait of William Hampton Johnson Hamp Johnson moved to Polk County in January of 1862 with his father. At age nineteen he enlisted in Company E of the 7th Florida Infantry Regiment. He was wounded near Atlanta in May 1864.

Admission to the museum is free. The museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The museum is located at 100 East Main Street in Bartow. For more information call Myrtice Young at (863) 534-4386 or visit the Polk County Historical Museum on the web at

Elvis Sighting Reported atRamonTheater

Elvis was in the building on Saturday, August 6, 2011. It was a quiet summer morning in Frostproof, but no one noticed him. There were no screaming fans standing in line at the Ramon to see the King of Rock & Roll. Not yet anyway. But that will change on March 3, 2012. Elvis Tribute Artist, Dwight Icenhower, came to Frostproof, to sign a contract for an appearance in the Ramon Theater 2012 Music Series. Greeting him were Kay Hutzelman, the Ramon Theater Board President who also happens to be the Mayor of Frostproof, along with Tina Miller, Office Administrator for the Ramon Theater. Dwight is extremely personable and quite unassuming. However, when he goes onstage he becomes Elvis. His March 3rd performance will include the early Elvis in the first portion of the show. In the second portion he will pay tribute to the Las Vegas Elvis. His last two appearances at the Ramon Theater have drawn sellout crowds. Icenhower has loyal followers in many areas of the state who flock to our small City of Frostproof to see him perform. The first two performances have already occurred, those being The Porchdogs on January 7th and Long Shot Band on January 14th. Our remaining performances include Laurie Miller, Feb. 4th, The Repeatles , February 11th and Elvis Tribute by Dwight Icenhower on March 3rd. The Music Series has become an extremely popular tradition for the Ramon, with performances scheduled in January, February and March of each year. Season tickets are offered at a discounted price or tickets may be purchased for individual shows. Proceeds are used for the continuing restoration and refurbishing of this grand old theater which was built in 1925 for vaudeville shows and movies. With grants, donations and the support of our many patrons the theater has once again become a venue for entertainment in our community. It serves not only our own residents but also guests who travel from surrounding areas to attend the events. The Ramon may be rented for individual and corporate functions. For additional information about the Ramon Theater, please call 863-635-7222 or visit our website @ www.ramontheater.com.

latform Art presents Platform Art Party #19: Art in AgriCulture on April 28 in downtown Lakeland.

A public art piece funded by Platform Art will be unveiled during the event, which is a celebration of Earth Month and Polk Countys rich agricultural heritage. Popular belief is agriculture cannot exist in hot concrete jungles, but Art in AgriCulture will, in conjunction with the City of Lakeland, highlight urban agriculture by making improvements to the citys environmental landscape. Various community partners will present visual art, short films, sound and performance pieces focusing on Polk Countys agricultural heritage during the Art Party. An agriculture-themed fashion show will also take place, ensuring that all forms of art can represent agricultural heritage. Along with a garden at the corner of New York Avenue and Orange Street, all efforts of Art in AgriCulture will ultimately help usher pedestrians seamlessly from The Lakeland Center to downtown locations such as Hollis Garden, the Frances Langford Promenade at Lake Mirror, shops, bars and restaurants in the area. St. Petersburg artist Charlie Parker has been commissioned to design and produce a large ceramic tile mural to be installed on the Orange Street Bridge to create a gateway from The Lakeland Center into the downtown area. For tickets to Art in AgriCulture, order online at www.platformart.org. Tickets are $15 in advance, and $20 the day of the event, $15 with student ID.

Polk State College Professor Lives His Dream

hen Polk State College Music Coordinator John Anderson was growing up in Bartow, he never dreamed he would one day build a successful college music program virtually from scratch, or lead a performance at Carnegie Hall, or conduct hundreds of voices for Disney World. He just knew he loved music, and he knew he wanted to make it for a living. Growing up in Polk County, I realized that if we were going to enjoy music, we would have to do it ourselves, he said, explaining that the bigger cities were simply too far away. As a boy, Anderson, 56, watched his parents perform in churches all over Polk. His mother sang and played the piano. His father could play just about anything, even a handsaw. By the time Anderson was 12, he was deeply in love with music, showing an affinity for the organ, an instrument he would later play at many weddings. After graduating from Bartow High School, he went on to Florida Southern College, earning a bachelors degree in music education. He also holds a masters from the University of South Florida.

He spent 28 years teaching for Polk County Public Schools, building programs that attracted hundreds of students. While at Bartow High School, he and his choir were invited to perform a solo at Carnegie Hall in New York City, an experience that was for a handful of his students their first adventure outside Polk. Later, he spent several years conducting hundreds of volunteer performers for the popular Disney Candlelight Processional. Seven years ago, he joined the faculty at Polk State as the programs only permanent, full-time instructor. Hes since recruited 16 adjunct instructors and the number of music majors has grown from 15 to nearly 70. In spring 2011, for the first time in the programs history, all 21 graduates were accepted to a university music program, no small feat considering acceptance is based on an audition. At the heart of his career, however, is still that simple, childlike joy for music a joy he loves to share with others. If I can get someone to like music even a little bit, then I think Ive done some good, he said.

Fat Women & Their Hair

Act 2Broadway2002
The show, now a musical, with twelve million in advance sales, gets twelve Tony nominations, winning eight, including Best Musical. The new Tracy-Marissa Winokur, is diagnosed with cervical cancer during rehearsals, undergoes a hysterectomy but tells no one. She goes on to star in the show. She has spent two years on voice and dance lessons. Aint giving this up The show eventually goes on to be produced in Las Vegas, London, Australia, Toronto, South Africa, Manila, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Dubaiand Shanghai, China.(not many Negroes there but a whole lot of egg roll lovers). The movie is shot in Toronto (cheaper, better weather, great egg rolls), cost 75 million and grosses 202 million worldwide to become the fourth highest grossing musical of all time (ok, Ill tell you: GREASE, CHICAGO and MAMA MIA). Want some gossip? Since Scientology was Travoltas religion of choice and calls for workshops to cure homosexuality, a gay publication called for a boycott of the film by gays (remember, Travolta played a woman in drag but the original part was also a man in drag--and he was gay. You figure it out). Act 4New Line Cinema asked the original writer/director, John Waters, to write a sequel using the Viet Nam war as a backdrop. Travolta announced publicly that he would not return, since he was not a sequel guy. You may remember the GREASE sequel. But thenprobably not. This summer Theatre Winter Haven presents the musical version of HAIRSPRAY. The show runs from July 20 to August 5, and you dont have to be overweight to attend. Call 294-SHOW.

Act 1the movies1988

A cult film appears with a drag queen in a lead part and an overweight girl looking for acceptance. The title of the film was quite peculiar but the response joyous. It was called HAIRSPRAY. From a movie to a musical to a musical movie, this was to be the story of a remarkable success that spanned almost thirty years in the making. (Later-to-be shock show host Ricky Lake was young Tracy Turnblad and drag queen Divine was her mother in the original). John Waters made this quirky movie about an overweight teenage girl who wanted so much to dance on the popular Corny Collins show. Alas, fat girls who champion racial integration can never be teen queens, especially big girls who wear big hair-dossomething her teacher called hair-donts. Such social commentary was fodder in the Kennedy age-of-Camelot, but Tracy perseveres to learn the dance steps and become our dancing queen, pre-ABBA anyway.

Act 3the movie musical2007

John Travolta is cast as Edna, Tracys mother, but the film company first wanted Robin Williams or Steve Martin, proven comedians. The producers wanted John Travolta, a proven greaser who could also sing. Chistopher Walken beats out Billy Crystal for the part of Tracys dad. Yes, Travolta wears plenty of spandex, latex and a body suit. He undergoes four hours of makeup each day of shooting. 1100 girls audition for the part of chunky Tracy and unknown Nikki Blonsky gets the part. She had absolutely no professional experience (see, dreams can come true).

She came to the U.S. when she was accepted into the Fellowship program at The Ailey School in NYC. In addition to The Ailey School, Miho attended Earl Mosleys Institute of the Arts for two consecutive summers. This is her first season with Florida Dance Theatres professional company. Miho started taking ballet classes at Mikuni Ballet in her home town when she was four years old. She began her first real ballet technique classes at the International Ballet Studios in Japan at the age of six. Miho says, Dance is where I feel the most happy in my life. I aspire to become a dancer who inspires others and makes the audience feel deeply moved by my movement. At age 17, Miho was invited to study at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater by former director Mrs. Denise Jefferson where she was accepted into the prestigious fellowship program.

Miho came to Florida this season after meeting Freddie DeJesus at Earl Mosley Institute of the Arts were she was given a solo in a dance he choreographed. After seeing her perform, he asked Miho to come down and dance with Florida Dance Theatres professional company. The Firebird

he Firebird is a ballet created by composer Igor Stravinsky and choreographer Michel Fokine. The story is based on Russian folk tales of a magical glowing bird that is both a blessing and a curse to its captor. The ballet was premiered by the Ballets Russes in Paris on June 25, 1910 to critical acclaim and was a major breakthrough for Stravinsky with the public and critics. Florida Dance Theatre brings a fresh interpretation of the classic story to the historic Polk Theatre on Saturday May 12 at 7:30 p.m. Also on the program are new works by Associate Director/Resident Choreographer Ferdinand De Jesus, and company member Stefan Dolbashian. My Fair Lady
My Fair Lady has been called the perfect Musical and for good reason. It opened in 1956 on Broadway and was an immediate smash hit, setting what was then the record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. The musical is based on George Bernard Shaws Pygmalion and with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. A popular film version directed by George Cukor and starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison has become a classic. The film won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director. Audrey Hepburn would not receive Best Actress for her film role, that coveted award went to the original star of the Broadway production Julie Andrews for her portrayal of the magical nanny in the Disney Classic Mary Poppins that same yearsweet vindication for not being offered her original role for the film. Nol Coward was originally offered the role of Henry Higgins in the stage musical but turned it down, he suggested Rex Harrison instead. After much deliberation, Harrison agreed to accept the part. Mary Martin was an early choice for the role of Eliza Doolittle, but declined the role. The young actress Julie Andrews was discovered and cast as Eliza Doolittle after the shows creative team went to see her Broadway debut in The Boy Friend. Moss Hart agreed to direct after hearing only two songs. On opening night Rex Harrison, who was unaccustomed to singing in front of a live orchestra, announced that under no circumstances would he go on that night...with those thirtytwo interlopers in the pit. He locked himself in his dressing room and came out little more than an hour before curtain time. The whole company had been dismissed but were recalled, and opening night was a successthe rest is history. My Fair Lady closed its original Broadway run on September 29, 1962 after a record breaking 2,717 performances and the Original Cast Recording went on to become the best-selling album in the country. Lakeland Community Theatre presents what the New York Times has called One of the Best Musicals of the Century. Dont miss My Fair Lady opening February 24, 2012 for a three week engagement. Performances Feb 24 - Mar 11 Fri-Sat, 7:30pm Sunday, 2:00pm Performances are held at the Lake Mirror Center Theatre 121 S. Lake Ave, Lakeland FL 33801
