As David S. Kris, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, remarked: "This case underscores the potential threat that U.S. citizens with foreign fighter experience pose upon returning to the United States, specifically in terms of inciting other U.S.-based individuals to follow their example. They return from conflict zones with combat experience, a network of contacts overseas and strong credibility withrecruits seeking an authority figure."51 p g y g y g FBI Director Robert Mueller, referencing the Boyd case and others, added, We have learned that it can take years before individuals with foreign fighter experience begin to develop a radicalization network.52
Case represents another example of sons adopting their father s jihadist belief systems. A 2004 Canadian Security fathers systems Intelligence Service report, classified SECRET and leaked to the public, pointed out that "there are a number of young men living in Canada who are the sons of known Islamic extremists and who have adopted a jihadist mentality...In most cases, these young men are the product of an upbringing by Islamic radicals who want their sons to follow in their footsteps."53 Rhetoric of a war against Muslims consistently used as a radicalization tool. (Ex: Dylan Boyd believed that the FBI has it in for all Muslims.) Continued focus on military targets within the U.S. (Ex: The Arkansas recruiting station shooting, the plot to target recruitment offices in southern California the Fort Dix plot and the recently foiled plot to attack the National California, plot, 54 Guard air base in Newburgh, N.Y.) Continued trend of homegrown extremists training domestically, often in rural or mountainous areas. (Ex: Daniel Boyd, Hysen Sherifi, and Zak Boyd practiced military tactics and the use of weapons on private property in Caswell Co nty Cas ell County, North Carolina ) Terrorists have demonstrated a particularly strong affinity for paintball in recent Carolina. ) ha e partic larly years.
