Game, set and match for revamped tennis centre

Tennis players are set to score with the $3 million redevelopment of the Redcliffe tennis centre.
Councils proposed upgrade of the complex on the corner of Oxley Avenue and Portwood Street, Redcliffe

includes plans to resurface the tennis courts with plexicushion and synthetic grass surfaces. While the key aim of the project is to resurface the existing ten courts, construction of another two courts is planned. The redevelopment will be carried out in consultation

with Tennis Qld, ensuring the tennis centre can host a range of junior and open tournaments. The upgraded courts will boost opportunities for social and competition tennis as well as coaching and development programs. Improvements to the complex will include better

lighting, new fencing around the courts and an upgraded clubhouse. The project will be jointfunded by Moreton Bay Regional Council and the State Government. Construction is scheduled to commence later this year.

Major upgrade for leisure centre

A $3.2 million upgrade to the Albany Creek Leisure Centre is expected to be finished by September.
While council funded the car park extension for a further 44 vehicles, it has also entered into a joint venture agreement with Belgravia Leisure Pty Ltd to expand the health club. The upgraded health club will have an improved weights area, a bicycle fitness centre, aerobics floor, consulting fitness rooms and a new physiotherapy section. There also will be expanded programs and classes. Other works at the leisure centre include a new entry, reception offices, a child care area and caf deck.

Beautiful Beachmere
The third stage of a council project that is rejuvenating the coastal township of Beachmere is nearing completion. Beachmeres beautification project has improved the amenity of the area while retaining its unique charm and the third stage of works has included upgrading Clayton Park and the Activity Centre Park. Council has used more than 8,000 plants in extensive landscaping works at the parks. It has also constructed pedestrian pathways, installed lighting, upgraded the skate park and provided an additional picnic shelter and park furniture. Younger residents can play basketball and soccer games in a new multigoal area. The works are expected to be completed by August, weather permitting. Stages one and two of the Beachmere project involved remodelling the towns Main Street, Biggs Avenue, the northern section of Clayton Park and A&H Lehman Park.

Fish feed on mozzie problem

Native fish may be made available to residents as part of a new initiative to reduce freshwater mosquito populations in the Moreton Bay region.
More than 2,000 fish were recently released into dams at Murrumba Downs and Samford with plans to make the fish available to residents by the end of the year. The breeding program, co-ordinated by council and the Pine Rivers Fish Management Association, involves two species of fish: Firetail Gudgeons and Crimson Spotted Rainbowfish. These fish are found in local freshwater creeks and streams and are also natural predators of mosquitoes, capable of eating hundreds of larvae each day. Council has an extensive mosquito control program spraying more than 54,000 hectares of salt water tidal areas each year. However, until now, this program didnt combat mosquitoes breeding on private properties, dams and ponds. This initiative will help residents manage trouble spots on their properties, which will have a big impact on the number of mozzies found in both the backyard and the wider Moreton Bay region.

Caboolture East projects brighten community spaces

A rainbow river mural, new playground equipment, new footpaths and public gathering space are helping improve the community atmosphere of Caboolture East. Rafting Ground Park at William Street, near Caboolture River, now has new playground equipment and landscaping. A rainbow coloured mural of a river is brightening Lower King Streets streetscape and new footpaths have been built in several locations around the suburb. A public gathering space with a covered shelter and two separate play areas for children have been constructed at Rowe Street Park. Artists have also been engaged to work with the local community to incorporate art into the project. An amenities block at Wallace Street North Park was recently completed. Council has been working closely with the State Governments Community Renewal Program to deliver key projects identified through community surveys taken in late 2007.

Creative community website

The creative arts community now has its own council website.
Creative Moreton will provide a portal to arts, culture and heritage information in the region. Logon to www.creativemoreton.org.au for information about artists, actors, dancers, historians and organisations.

Give our parks a workout

Council is making outdoor fitness easy, constructing a new recreational trail network at Talobilla Park and installing fitness equipment in parks throughout the region.
A new 1km trail network at Talobilla Park, KippaRing is now complete and has transformed the sport precinct into a space that caters for recreational use and independent fitness such as walking, running and cycling. Council and the State Government co-funded the $170,000 project and there are plans in place to extend the trail network around the park in future stages. As part of its commitment to encouraging residents to lead healthy and active lifestyles, council is installing outdoor gym equipment at Wyllie Park and Sweeney Reserve, Petrie; Peter Campbell Park, Strathpine; Everest Street Park, Warner and Tom Simpson and Bleakley parks at Albany Creek. Fitness equipment was also recently installed at Wally Strong Park, Bellmere.

Welcoming Place

Deception Bay Library is reaching out to the local Indigenous population through the addition of a Welcoming Place. The well-resourced Indigenous focus space is the third of its kind in Moreton

Bay Region Libraries, with other Welcoming Places at Caboolture and Bribie Island libraries. A digital artwork by David Williams depicting the land and sea of Deception Bay provides a visual focus for

the area. The space can be accessed by all members of the community and features information, resources, newspapers, book lists, flags, a noticeboard and seating. The project was established in partnership with

Murriajabree ATSI Assoc Inc and will help serve Indigenous people living in the Deception Bay area. An official opening will be held at Deception Bay Library on 3 July, at 3pm.

Tantalise the taste buds while admiring the acacias at the annual Whats Cooking in the Gardens? event on Sunday, 2 August.
Weather permitting, thousands of food-lovers are expected to flock to Redcliffe Botanic Gardens between 10am and 3pm, to celebrate with delicious cuisine, horticultural demonstrations, gardening seminars, entertainment and market stalls. Restaurateurs and food retailers will display a

smorgasbord of seafood, meats, poultry and vegetarian dishes throughout the day. A selection of quality wines will also be available for tasting. Gardening guru Colin Campbell will answer all of those garden-variety questions and Kim McCosker - who co-authored the 4 Ingredients cookbook with Rachel Bermingham - will talk about her inspiring journey to success. Kim will also share some simple recipes and cooking tips on the day. The Weber barbecues will be fired up for the Battle of

the Butchers and there will also be roving performers and plenty of fun activities for kids. Entry to Whats Cooking in the Gardens? and most activities are free. Gold coin donation parking will be available at Bradley Park with all proceeds to go to the Friends of the Redcliffe Botanic Gardens. The gardens are located at George Street, Redcliffe.
