Microsoft Windows Vista

IPA Help settings and word lists are stored in C:\Program Files\SIL\IPA Help. On Windows Vista, settings and word list changes are redirected by the operating system to the users Virtual Store. This has the following effects: Each user starts with default settings regardless of settings changes other users make. Any user can create a word list. Only the user who created the word list can view it. Any user can edit a word list. Editing a word list creates a copy in the users Virtual Store. Only the user who made the edits can view the edited copy of the word list.

To allow all users to view new or edited word lists, log on an administrative user account and copy the word list files to the C:\Program Files\SIL\IPA Help folder.

Non-English Versions of Microsoft Windows

Phonetic symbols may not display correctly on some non-English versions of Microsoft Windows which use a different code page. (For example, Chinese and Korean Windows have the problem. French does not.) To correct this symbol display problem, set the language for nonUnicode programs to English by doing the following (Windows XP terms shown): 1. In Control Panel, double-click Regional and Language Options. The Regional and Language Options dialog box appears. 2. Click Advanced. 3. Under Language for non-Unicode programs, select English (United States). 4. Click OK. 5. Click Yes. 6. Click Yes to reboot. If the problem persists, follow the procedure under Phonetic Fonts in the Known Issues section.

Keyman
Tavultesoft Keyman is not required. However, if you want to create Word Lists, Keyman version 6 (or newer) is recommended to type transcriptions in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). For more information on the Web, go to http://www.tavultesoft.com/keyman/editions.php. IPA Help provides a Keyman keyboard and keying chart for typing IPA characters in the ASAP IPA fonts. The keyboard file to install is C:\Program Files\SIL\IPA Help\IPA-ASAP.kmx. The keying chart can be found at C:\Program Files\SIL\IPA Help\ IPA-ASAP Keying Chart.rtf.
