Title of Unit What are the Different Types of Clouds? Grade 4th Level

Stage 1 Identify Desired Results


List the understandings of your unit: Content Standards: S4E3. Students will differentiate between the states of water and how they relate to the water cycle and weather. c. Investigate how clouds are formed. d. Explain the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, and precipitation). e. Investigate different forms of precipitation and sky conditions. (rain, snow, sleet, hail, clouds, and fog). S4E4. Students will analyze weather charts/maps and collect weather data to predict weather events and infer patterns and seasonal changes. a. Identify weather instruments and explain how each is used in gathering weather data and making forecasts (thermometer, rain gauge, barometer, wind vane, anemometer). b. Using a weather map, identify the fronts, temperature, and precipitation and use the information to interpret the weather conditions. c. Use observations and records of weather conditions to predict weather patterns throughout the year. d. Differentiate between weather and climate.

Essential Questions
Overarching Questions: How are clouds formed? What are clouds made of? Topical Questions: What is a cloud? What are the different types of clouds? How can clouds help us predict the weather?

Stage 2 - Evidence Performance Task(s)


Media specialist will read a non-fiction book which discusses the various types of clouds. Students will then view the web 2.0 multimedia video Somewhere Over the Rainbow and will discuss the various types of clouds afterwards. The classroom teacher will then have students construct a collage using photos of clouds which they have chosen and cut out of old magazines in the classroom. Their collages will then be displayed in the case outside of the media center.

Definition of cloud will be given. Discuss with students the different types of clouds and utilize Web 2.0 multimedia video Somewhere over the Rainbow. Have books available for students to read which deal with cloud formation and types of clouds. Goal: Students will have a clear understanding of the different types of clouds. Role: Facilitate and lead discussion about clouds and weather predictions. Audience: 4th grade students Situation: Lesson in the library for 45 minutes and then classroom teacher to facilitate collage construction.

Classroom teacher may choose to give a quiz to assess student knowledge and understanding. Classroom teacher will facilitate construction of cloud collage.
