For a live/production unit, service outage will last approximately one minute. DSR6050 service outage is approx 20 minutes & DSR6300 is approx 50 minutes. Identify the DSR Firmware Version using the Front Panel Display
Starting at the Main (DSR-XXXX) Menu, Select Install

Press arrows within the Install menus, to find the sub-menu labeled FIRMWARE. The High field is the current firmware version that we need to identify.

As of 4-23-2010, here are the LATEST and PREVIOUS versions for each model: This information will eventually be out-of-date as new models and code are released. Consult DSR Firmware Release Notes for current version information.

Note the firmware version numbers are hexadecimal, where A-F (equal to 10-15) are used and have a higher value than any digit (0-9). 17A is higher/newer than 178, for example.

Configure a PC and the DSR to communicate

Besides using the DSR and PC on a common network, you can also simply connect straight or crossover Ethernet cable directly from PC to DSR 10/100 Ethernet port. This is the lower port (on most units) of the two, labeled 10/100.

GigE is not a control port and cannot be used for upgrade on every model.

On a Microsoft Windows OS PC: START menu> Settings > Network Connections > Local Area Connection Double Click on Properties

Scroll down to and highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Then click on Properties.

Select the radial button for Use the following IP address Specify an IP address that will allow us to communicate with the IRD by putting the IRD and PC on the same subnet. (ex. 192.168.0.XXX) With a default DSR IP Address configuration, set the PC to 192.168.0.103 The Subnet mask can be 255.255.255.0 Click on OK, to store the change of IP address on the PC. On the front panel of the DSR, confirm or set the IRD IP Address On DSR4410 front panel: Main Menu > Install > IP ADDRESS > Address On all other listed DSR models: Main Menu > IP > PORT 10/100 > IP Address It can be edited, but the default (192.168.0.100) will work with 192.168.0.103 set on the PC. Test the Network

Ping the IRD, to prove the Ethernet communication path is open. START > RUN > Type CMD and press Enter, to open a Command Prompt

Type: ping 192.168.0.100 (IRD IP Address) Press Enter

Confirm (0% loss) near the bottom of the results from the ping request and close the command line window. If the ping is not successful, use the continuous ping command: ping 192.168.0.100 t Use a space followed by a dash and lower case T. Press Enter. Next, reboot the DSR4410 by pulling the power cord or using the front panel Power Cycle Reset option. As the DSR4410 boots up, it should begin to respond to the repeated pings. Once it does, close the command line window and continue to the next step.

DSR Ethernet Upgrade

The software Zip File that comes from Digital CM has some extra files and folders. Find and Save the file with the .pkg extension, found within the kflash folder. The remaining files and folders can be deleted. Through a separate download/CM order, the KFlash utility (KFlash2.exe executable) needs to be saved onto your PC as well. This utility is used to perform the upgrade. NOTE: The KFlash2.exe file from Digital CM does not work with Windows 7. NOTE: The KFlash2.exe file from Digital CM must have its .exe extension changed to .zip and the desired KFlash.exe file is inside the resulting Zip File. When you have copied the correct Kflash2.exe file, it will have a black microchip icon. Heres an example file folder, containing the necessary files. (.exe and .pkg)

Open the KFlash2.exe ftp upgrade utility, from this PC location. Select an upgrade package file using the Package button found below the IP Address window. Only files with *.pkg will be allowed. Once the user selects a *.pkg file, the KFlash will scan the package for verification, update the data in Select Firmware Package section and allow access to the Upgrade button.

Click on Upgrade after reading CAUTION! The unit will automatically reboot at the conclusion of the upgrade. This happens 2-5 minutes after clicking Upgrade. This will interrupt a live service for at least one full minute*, during this automatic reboot. If the unit is processing a live service, you may wish to wait and choose a specific time to perform the upgrade (and interrupt the service).

CAUTION!

*DSR6050 & DSR6300 take much longer.

The upgrade firmware moves to the IRD memory within 2-5 minutes.

The DSR unit will reboot. There is an approximately one minute boot up and recovery time.* *DSR6050 & DSR6300 take 20 and 50 minutes respectively, to perform internal encoder upgrades that trickle from main memory.
