Co-curricular activity (Singapore)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This article relies on references to primary sources or sources affiliated with the subject, rather than references from independent authors and third-party publications. Please add citations from reliable sources. (March 2011)

The Tahan Mountain Trekking Team (a CCA in Hwa Chong Institution), on an expedition to Annapurna Base Camp, Nepal in 2000 Co-curricular activities (CCAs), previously known as Extracurricular Activities (ECA) are non-academic activities that all Singaporean students must participate in. This policy was introduced by the Ministry of Education, as a means to enhance social interaction, leadership, healthy recreation, self-discipline and self-confidence. Through CCAs, students in their early teens are often given actual public responsibilities. Red Cross and SJAB members, for example, are often required to render first aid at public events. Most uniformed groups require precision, management and organizational skills, providing training to prepare students for the outside world. In polytechnics and universities (tertiary education institutes), CCA records are considered by potential employers.

[edit] Classification of CCAs

There is a wide choice of CCAs in schools, for which students can sign up based on their interest and ability. Schools typically classify CCAs under one of the following groups: Performing Arts Sports and Games Uniformed Groups Clubs and Societies Student Associations Core CCAs, which typically include the Sports, Performing Arts Groups and Uniformed Groups, tend to take up more time and resources and have more emphasis placed on them by the school. Membership in at least one Core CCA is compulsory for secondary school students in Singapore and it is considered an integral part of the education system. Merit CCAs, which typically include the Clubs and Societies, are usually less timeconsuming. Academic clubs however may be consume as much time as, if not more than, Core CCAs. Merit CCAs serve as an optional pursuit for students with an interest in what the CCA has to offer.

Secondary schools typically divide CCAs into Core CCAs and Merit CCAs:

[edit] Structure of the CCA Programme

CCA choices vary widely from school to school, although schools at each education level are required to conform to national standards prescribed for that level. For instance, all secondary schools must compulsorily offer Band as a musical group. Secondary schools with an enrolment of less than 1000 must offer either National Cadet Corps or National Police Cadet Corps as a uniformed group, and those with an enrolment of more than 1000, both. In primary schools, CCAs are often introduced to students at Primary Three. Not all primary schools make CCA participation compulsory. In primary schools, Brownies are likened to junior Girl Guides. In secondary schools, CCAs are treated more seriously. Students are required to pick at least one Core CCA to join at Secondary One. Belonging to a Core CCA is compulsory, and the students may choose a second CCA if they wish. At the end of the fourth/fifth year, 1 to 2 'O' Level points are removed from the examination aggregate (a lower aggregate indicates better marks). Although the marks are few, it is believed by many that they may make a difference when the students are considered for the most popular tertiary institutions. For example, one minimum prerequisite for admission Raffles Institution at Year Five, via the 'O' Levels, is an already perfect score with the maximum of 4 points removed.

[edit] Structure of Typical CCAs

CCAs are held outside of curriculum hours and the activities partaken depend on the nature of CCA. For example, Uniformed groups do foot drills and team-building exercises while competitive sportsmen spend most of the time training and learning techniques from their instructors. CCA groups typically feature an Executive Committee. In musical groups and CCAs catering to specific interests, the Executive Committee typically consists of a Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer, among other positions. The National Police Cadet Corps has started a few Open Units in the tertiary institutions, recruiting members to serve as student leaders in the secondary school units. Many former students return to their alma mater after graduation to help impart what they have learned to their juniors. Some do so within a formal framework, such as those in the uniformed groups (where ex-cadets are appointed as cadet officers), or the Voluntary Adult Leader scheme (for those above age 20). Others do so on a casual basis.

[edit] Competitions
Many CCA-related competitions are held in Singapore, creating a competitive environment which provide CCA groups an objective to work towards. The Ministry of Education organizes competitions for competitive sports at the zonal and national level, respectively the yearly Zonal and National Schools Competitions. MOE also organizes the biennale Singapore Youth Festival for the Aesthetics CCAs.

Co-Curricular Activities

Champlain Abroad courses are designed to connect our students to the place, the people and the culture. These connections happen through a variety of extracurricular and co-curricular events and activities. For the Montreal campus two weekend trips are part of the optional extracurricular activities, one to Ottawa (Canada's capital) and one to Quebec City (Quebec's provincial capital). Our local faculty and guest speakers bring their cultural perspective and professional expertise to the course content, challenging students to understand the material through a new global lens. Many of our courses have an embedded experiential component that takes the students outside the classroom and connects them to the places and culture related to the course content.

Course Related Events and Activities

The following is a partial list of some of the co-curricular activities that have been offered in Montreal.

ART 220 Canadian Culture through the Fine Arts

This course is designed to introduce students to Canadian culture through an exploration of its fine arts. Much of the course includes beyond the classroom explorations of Canada's historical landmarks such as the McCord Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Montreal Museum of History & Archeology (Pointe a Calliere), the Inuit Gallery 'Le Chariot' and the St Joseph Oratory.

Literature, Conversational French and History Courses

Students taking any of the Canadian literature, history or conversational French courses enjoy first-hand the hockey passion synonymous with living in Montreal by visiting the AMC Forum (The Hockey Legacy), and experiencing the bilingual atmosphere of one of Montreal's major hockey arenas while attending Montreal Junior's games. The students may attend one or more theatrical performances that expand their understanding of universal and local issues at the Centaur Theater. They also visit cultural landmarks of Montreal (the Main, the Plateau, Westmount, the Point, etc.) and important sites including the great religious symbols of Quebec culture (St-Joseph Oratory, Notre Dame Basilica, etc.).

All Business Courses

Business students in Montreal will have opportunities to explore business from the perspective of the United States' largest trading partners by meeting industry professionals and touring some of the following companies: the Port of Montreal ( third largest port in North America); the Simard Warehouse (leader in the Canadian Transportation and Warehousing Industry); the Canadian National Railway Yard (students meet and ride along side CN personnel); Conterm Containers (students learn first-hand how containers are handled, repaired, stacked and stored within a closed system); Hunt Refrigeration (a fullservice climate controlled container-care company). Spring semester students may also visit the Quebec Ice Hotel (redesigned and rebuilt in its entirety each year in Quebec City).

All Game Majors

Game students have the opportunity to join (student rate) and attend the Montreal Chapter of the IGDA Meetings (International Game Developer Associations) where they will meet industry professionals. Students often visit (Eidos , EA/Bioware, A2M, Ubisoft, and Space & Dreams) where they may tour the facilities and often have an opportunity to speak with one of the company's creative/producers. Game students may also visit of the NAD CenterNational Animation and Design Centre one of Canada's major training centres for new technologies and new media. The NAD Center was the first in the country to open video

game training and the first in the world to teach Softimage softwares, offers innovative and comprehensive training programs. During the fall semester our Game students attend the Montreal International Game Summit (MIGS) an annual event for game development specialists from all over the world. The conference is hosted by world-renowned experts in programming, visual arts, game design, audio design, production and business. Depending on availability, Spring semester students may get to participate in the Global Jam. Founded in 2008, this event seeks to broaden the outreach of IGDA while giving an opportunity to create games in the world's largest Game Jam to date.

Graphic Design Majors: Duality, Design and Dissent

Students taking the Duality Design and Dissent course visit and attend workshops at the Canadian Center of Architecture (CCA), an international research center and museum based on the conviction that architecture is a public concern. The Graffiti Caf may take our students on a cultural urban tour of Montreal's graffiti art in various parts of the city. Through this tour, students learn where the artists came from and what experiences and ideas inspired their work. At the Museum Pointe a Callire students take the unusual underground route covering six centuries of history from the time when Natives camped to present day through the permanent exhibit, "Where Montreal Was Born." Montreal provides our students with limitless opportunities to explore the arts as you can see in the introductory video on the Quartier des Spectacles.

Global Environmental Science

This lab science allows students to explore global environment issues by using three unique Montreal locations as their lab. At the Mount Royal Park that occupies part of the mountain lying in the midst of Montreal Island includes the highest spot in the city. Students will learn about about various landmarks, rocks, soil types and trees on the mountain and discuss the evolution of the mountain over time and the forestry in Quebec over time. At the Biodome students explore the recreation of some of the most beautiful ecosystems of the Americas (Tropical Forest, Laurentian Forest, St. Lawrence Marine, Ecosystem and the Polar Worlds). The Biosphere exhibits and events guide the students' understanding of major environmental issues, including those related to water, air, climate change, sustainable development and responsible consumption.

Weekend Trips
Quebec City
Students visit the capital of Quebec established by Samuel de Champlain in 1608 as a trading outpost and strategic fort on the St. Lawrence River. Qubec is the second largest city in the province after Montral, and it retains a mostly French flavor. The city's most noticeable landmark is the looming Chteau Frontenac, a grand hotel in its heyday and a part of a chain of Canadian Pacific hotels that helped the railroad link together Canada's vast landscape. Just outside the walls of the Upper Town are the Plains of Abraham, where a French defeat in a pivotal battle of the Seven Years' War decided the fate of New France and influenced the later creation of Canada. The historic district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each semester the students tour the historic Chateau Frontenac and Old Quebec one of the oldest and only fortified walled cities north of Mexico. They may visit the Museum of Civilization, the Capital Observatory, and/or the Plains of Abraham. In the Spring Semester students have the chance to attend the winter splendor of the Quebec Carnival and may even experience Quebec's famous Ice Hotel.

Ottawa
Students can also visit Canada's capital city, Ottawa and experience a bit of English Canada. Ottawa is the fourth-largest urban area in Canada and many people think of it as the ideal capital city-beautiful, green, cosmopolitan and full of cultural offerings. Students take part in a guided tour of the Royal Canadian Mint and the Museum of Civilization, explore Parliament Hill, home to the House of Commons, the Library of Parliament, the Hall of Honor, the Senate, and the impressive Peace Tower. Students who choose to visit the Canadian Nature Museum explore the world of insects, prehistoric dinosaurs, and the changing face of the earth. Students may also discover the military history by exploring the Canadian War Museum.

Extracurricular Activities & Events

No matter which semester, Montreal abounds with unlimited activities, festivals and events. Montreal enhances our students' personal and professional interests. Throughout the year it is the home of various film festivals from the Montreal World Film Festival to the Montreal 60 Second Film Festival and the Fantasia Film Festival - there is always something to engage and entertain. Students interested in playing a more active role in their entertainment can attend Improvisation Nights at Theatre Ste Catherine and take part in scoring spontaneously created the scenes by the local preformers. Performers with lowest scores are eliminated until there is only one "survivor." Even more engaging is the CBC Experience which offers a TV news workshop where students assume the functions of reporters, anchormen and technicians. Working as a team, they produce the equivalent of a Canadian evening news program. Along with the cultural enriching experiences described above, students may also participate in fun activities offered throughout Montreal such as a fastpaced laser tag game in the multi-level arena of Montreal's LaserQuest. During the Fall Semester students will enjoy the drumming vibes and laid back atmosphere to of the Mont Royal Tam Tams and the end of summer in the parks and outdoor cafes. They may also experience a variety of Halloween events from the annual midnight showing of the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show, or the Extreme Halloween Labyrinth at the Old Port. Students many also participate in a Ghost Walk Tour of Old Montreal or attend any number of costume contests and related events. From mid-September to November students will experience the wonders of the Chinese Lantern Festival at the Botanical Garden. Over 700 lanterns are designed in Montreal and handcrafted by skillful artists from Shanghai. During the Spring Semester students can take part in a plethora of winter related festivals and activities. One of the major winter festivals is Montreal's Igloofest where a kingdom of igloos takes over the Old Port and people dance outside to the music of Piknic Electronik. The other major winter festival is the Montreal High Lights Festival: original and impressive, this multidisciplinary event features stilt walkers, musicians and acrobats blending with digital arts, dance, projections and fire-handling. Our Montreal students actually share the festivities of St. Patrick's Day with our Dublin students as they enjoy the St. Patrick's Parade which has been held every year since 1824; this parade is the oldest St. Patrick's Day parade in Canada. No circumstance, from snowstorms to wartime or economic depression, has stopped the parade from marching on. Finally, skiers can still get on a hill as there are several places to ski in the region; prices range from $35-$60 per day (plus gear and bus transportation). Some of the most well known ski areas are: Mont Tremblant, Owl's Head, Mont Ste-Anne, Mont St. Sauveur and Ski Bromont.

Brunei schools go to war on November 19

PSSSM organising committee Chairman and Acting Director of Co-Curriculum Education Department Pg Suhaimi Pg Hj Bakar (2nd L) addressing the media during the press briefing yesterday. He is accompanied by Acting Assistant Director of Co-Curriculum Education Department and Co-Deputy Chairman of the committee Roslin Suhailee (R), Sports School Principal Zaman Hj Gapar (L) and organising committee secretary and Head of Sports and Games at the Co-Curriculum Education Department Pg Jusri Pg Hj Hassim (2nd R).Picture: BT/ Chua Guan Cheong Chua Guan Cheong BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN Friday, November 11, 2011 SECONDARY schools and colleges in Brunei are set to wage war against one another come November 19 in the 5th National Secondary Schools and Colleges Sports Festival (PSSSM). During a media briefing by the PSSSM organising committee at the Co-Curricular Education Department in Lambak Kanan yesterday morning, Chairman Pg Suhaimi Pg Hj Bakar, Acting Director of Co-Curriculum Education, announced that the biennial festival will run for nine days from Nov 19-27. The schools and colleges will be divided into four zones nationwide, and competition is split into two categories the under 15 (category B), and 16, 17 and 18 (category C). According to organising committee secretary Pg Jusri Pg Hj Hassim, Head of Sports and Games at the Co-Curriculum Education Department, this edition of the sports festival will see the introduction of hockey into the national schools' sport scene. Making its first appearance in the sports festival, the sport will see four men's team

representing all four zones, and three ladies team competing for the winner's medal. Pg Suhaimi admitted that hockey as a sport is still quite limited in the schools' sports scene due to a lack of hockey fields and qualified coaches. "We want to promote the sport (hockey) in Brunei, and we will, in future, suggest that more (hockey) fields be built in schools while developing programmes to train more coaches to promote the sport," said Pg Suhaimi. "We are always looking to introduce new sports in schools, but we will observe the response of students towards the sport before deciding whether or not to promote it," he said, adding that they are also considering promoting cricket in schools. According to the organisers, the key objective of the sports festival is to provide a healthy and vibrant environment for students to be nurtured both physically and mentally. The event was also organised to give added incentive to schools' management and parents to encourage the students to actively participate in sporting events. The event will hopefully increase collaboration, mutual understanding and foster unity among the officers of the department with the teachers of the schools and sports associations to improve sporting standards in the country. The sporting event is seen as a long-term project in discovering and nurturing athletes to represent the country, and according to Pg Jusri, they will be looking to select athletes to represent Brunei in the Asean School Games during the sports festival. Acting Assistant Director of Co-Curriculum Education Roslin Suhailee and Sports School Principal Zaman Hj Gapar, co-chairmen of the organising committee, were also present at the briefing. The Brunei Times BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN gscfk9.jpg The board games are presented to the School Principal, Hjh Noraini Ibrahim (4th R) by Pg Hj Mohd Yussop Pg Hj Abas (5th L) and witnessed by the School's Administrators. Picture: Courtesy of Sekolah Menengah Perdana Wazir SEKOLAH Menengah Perdana Wazir received a welcome addition to its resources a donation by Pg Hj Mohd Yussop Pg Hj Abas last month. The donation, in the form of board games has "great educational value across a range of different subject areas", said principal, Hjh Noraini Ibrahim. It will bring a lot of value to the students of the school, she added. The games include Chess, Chinese Checkers, Cluedo, Life, Ludo, Mastermind, Monopoly, Scrabble, Snakes and Ladders, Taboo, Uno and Upword; a grand total of over 50 games. The games will be used to develop students' thinking and logic skills as well as enhancing their English Language development. They are a fantastic resource for class use and for CCA

(Co-Curricular Activities). The Brunei Times Page: A10 Dennis Lim BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN ggz0bb.jpg Brunei's Under-12 athletes saying their goodbyes prior to their departure for the 5th Asean Primary Schools Sports Olympiad (APSSO) from Oct 8-15 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia yesterday.Picture: Bt/ Dennis Lim 26 headed for Yogyakarta, Indonesia TO Yogyakarta they go! A total of 36 athletes and officials from Brunei flew off to the Indonesian city last night to compete in the 5th Asean Primary School Sports Olympiad (APSSO) held from Oct 8-15. Pg Jusri Pg Hj Hassim, the Senior Officer at the Sports and Games Unit at the Department of Co-Curriculum Education, Ministry of Education who is part of the contingent said that he is hoping to take advantage of the opportunity to properly bring up the young athletes. 26 athletes, 19 boys and seven girls ranging from ages 12 and below, along with 10 others comprising a team manager, officers, coaches and assistant coaches, will be competing in five sports football, badminton, athletics, chess and table tennis. "We try our hardest for them, preparing them at the grassroots of their time. We hope that this will provide them with the exposure needed for them to grow into the future national team," Pg Jusri told The Brunei Times. "These athletes may be the future of Brunei sports," he said. The senior officer certainly has high expectations and hopes for the seeds of the nations, adding that most countries are exposing their young athletes to foreign competition at this age as starting to do so when the youngsters are already in secondary schools would be too late. It is at the ripe age of 12 and below that the proper fundamentals of sports should be drilled into their systems, he said. From there, progress on their skill levels can come swiftly towards bringing Brunei to the next stages of its sporting level. "So with this we hope to develop them properly and get them to be the best they can, for the future of our country," said Pg Jusri. This year's edition of the competition will be most welcomed by the Sultanate's youth footballers who were forced to sit out of last year's APPSO U-12 7-a-side competition due to Fifa's ban.

It was a most unfortunate incident as Pg Yusri had expressed full confidence in the squad then. "It is not impossible that these players will go on to represent the country one day. APSSO is just an early step and I am full of confidence after the results in Bangkok where we beat Indonesia 2-1 and Myanmar 2-0," he said last year. The team had placed second in the Asean Youth Football Cup 2010, held in Bangkok, Thailand. Their success prompted the introduction of the DST Group National Under-10 League and the DST Group National Under 12 League which were hoped to help prepare the youth footballers for anything coming their way.
