Honorary Chairman: IJGPS Former Prime Minister (Japan)
Dear Friends In August 2000, I paid an official visit to India as prime minister of Japan to resolve the seeming stalemate in Japan-India relations brought about by the Indian nuclear tests of May 1998. It was the first time in ten years for a Japanese prime minister to visit India, the previous time being the 1990 visit by the then Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu. During my visit in 2000, I worked with the Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to create the Japan-India Global Partnership, an initiative to bring our bilateral relations to a new dimension. As a result, the Japan-India relationship improved greatly and the foundation was laid for the excellent ties we enjoy today. The Japan-India Global Partnership has taken root in the last decade or so since my India visit and a strong bond between our two countries has further developed into a Japan India Japan-India Strategic and Global Partnership. Our bilateral relations have seen further rapid development since then, and our nations have become mutually indispensable partners in the areas of security and economy. We still have not fully attained the original goal, however. I say this because what the Indian prime minister and I agreed to was not simply to strengthen Japan-India relations, but to also consider how to share the fruits of this with the world and how Japan and India could contribute to global international relations. Although these objectives were also included in our agreement, they have yet to be fully achieved. To commemorate the partnership started in 2000, the India Center will hold the India-Japan Global Partnership Summit (IJGPS) for three days starting from September 5, 2011. I highly regard this initiative of the India Center, a nonprofit organization, and have agreed to be honorary chairman because I am confident that the IJGPS will q , y, p y discuss the question that remains, namely, Japan-India relations in the international community. The IJGPS will feature a variety of events. I hope that many Japanese will participate in areas that interest them and will create, alongside the many Indians who will attend, a second phase in the Japan-India Global Partnership era. Yours Yoshiro Mori
