materials and flexible pavements

38th Residential course in asphalt materials and flexible pavements
4 - 9 September 2011

Who should attend?

An understanding of the properties and performance of asphalt and the design, construction and maintenance of asphalt pavements is a fundamental requirement for a highway engineer and those in associated disciplines. This course has been designed primarily for highways-related operatives, technicians, engineers and managers or anyone who wishes to extend their knowledge of asphalt materials and flexible pavement design, construction and maintenance. The course serves personnel at all levels in the highways sector (both public and private) that are involved in, or responsible for, the design, specification, procurement, supply, installation, assessment or maintenance of highways and highway materials.

Why attend?
The course is broad and provides participants with an extensive overview of the subject. The comprehensive lecture notes provide an up to date introduction and include references leading to more detailed study. The course investigates: constituent materials of asphalt mixtures and their composition, design, production and installation in a quality assured industrial environment elements of pavement design incorporating the moves from empirical to analytical methods, explanations of how such techniques are employed the evaluation of material and pavement performance by laboratory and site testing the assessment and design for maintenance of pavements health and safety in asphalt production and laying

A well balanced and structured course which is useful to both experienced professionals and trainees. I will definitely be recommending this course to colleagues

broader sustainability issues including recycling techniques The course will deal with asphalt materials as they exist within the framework of Harmonised European Specifications, including those covering bitumen and aggregates. Therefore, in addition to traditional UK materials, reference will be made to innovative asphalt materials, such as EME2 bases, SMA and thin surfacings, which originated in Europe and have been introduced in the UK over recent years.

The course is based on a series of lectures with time for formal and informal discussions alongside practical demonstrations and site visits. Acknowledged specialists from appropriate backgrounds will contribute lectures to the course and deliver an appropriate blend of principles, research and practical application. Feedback from delegates on previous courses has been taken into account in setting the course syllabus and content to ensure that this years course will continue to meet the current and future needs of the industry. Lecturers include representatives from the following organisations: Mineral Products Association Aggregate Industries Cemex UK Materials Ltd Colas Ltd Durham County Council Finnpave Hanson Central Ringway Specialist Services Tarmac Group Shell Europe Volvo Construction Equipment WDM Ltd Full details of the course lecturers and syllabus can be found at: www.ceg.ncl.ac.uk/asphalt/ The course has been organised, since its inception, by Newcastle University in conjunction with MPA and its predecessor Associations. Newcastle Universitys School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences offers undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD programmes. The courses, which are research informed whilst remaining industrially focused, may be studied full or part time. MPA Asphalt is part of the Mineral Products Association (MPA), the representative body for the UK aggregates, asphalt, cement, concrete, lime, mortar and silica sand industries. The MPA was formed in March 2009 through the merger of the Quarry Products Association (QPA), the British Cement Association (BCA), and The Concrete Centre.

This course has greatly widened my knowledge of this subject and will be very useful in my day to day job
