PREFACE
March 31, 2011 marked the completion of the 98th year of The Indian Science Congress Association. The 98th Indian Science Congress was held at Chennai under the auspices of the SRM University, from January 3-7, 2011. Dr.Manmohan Singh, Honble Prime Minister of India, inaugurated the Congress on 3rd January. Shri Kapil Sibal, Honble Union Minister of State for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Government of India delivered his speech. Sri M. K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu was also present. Dr T. R. Pachamuthu, Chancellor, SRM University gave the Vote of Thanks Prof K. C. Pandey, General President of ISCA delivered his address on the Focal Theme Quality Education and Excellence in Scientific Research in Indian Universities. Afterwards, the Honble Prime Minister of India, Dr.Manmohan Singh, delivered his Inaugural Address and presented Awards to dignitaries. The inaugural function was attended by over 7000 delegates including quite a few overseas scientists. There were Eighteen Plenary & Special Sessions devoted to different facets of the Focal Theme and Public Lectures in which Nobel Laureautes, many eminent scientists, technologists, policy-makers, industrial executives from industrial sector and social activists participated. Following the past tradition, Symposia on different interesting topics were organised in 14 sections besides the Platinum Jubilee Lectures which constituted a significant component of the entire programme. Invited Lectures and Paper Presentations (through Posters/Oral) organised in different sections were highly applauded. Special emphasis was given on ISCA Young Scientists Programme in sections and the awards were presented in this occasion by Dr Venkataraman Ramakrishnan, NL. A large number of students from the neighbourhood schools and colleges visited and participated in the programme on Science for School Children. Endowment lectures constituted a vital part of the programme. This apart, public lectures by Nobel Laureautes and few award lectures were organised. Pride of India Expo 2011 was one of the major events of the 98th Indian Science Congress. The development, achievement and contribution of Science and Technology vis--vis the Society was being show-cased by scientific institutions and the universities. The major organizations of Central and State Govts, R & D Institutions, Corporates, Academic Institutions, NGOs, Defence & Allied Organisations participated. Besides above, 4th Vigyan Sancharak Sammelan was organised with support from NCSTC, DST, New Delhi, where science communicators selected from different chapters of ISCA participated. The Valedictory Session was held on January 7, 2011. Prof. P. Satyanarayanan, Vice Chancellor, SRM University, gave the Welcome Address, Prof K. C. Pandey, General President, ISCA, made his presidential remarks and also presented awards and certificate to the participants judged for Best Poster presentation in the respective sections. The 98th Indian Science Congress concluded with handing over of Vigyan Joyt to Prof Geetha Bali, General President Elect.

ISCA Chapters continued their activities during the year under report by organizing seminars, symposia, lectures, quiz contests, etc. Among various activities, the Chapters observed National Science Day, World Environment Day, World Wetland Day, Earth Day, National Technology Day, World Health Day, World AIDS Day, National Children Day, Teachers Day, etc. The Association feels greatly honoured for receiving active financial support from Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India, to carry out many of its intended activities and to execute improvements over its existing infrastructure. The attempts are being made to expand resource base and improve the fund position by effective finance management. The strength of Association lies on the strong support it is receiving from its members. I am confident that with this support, the Association will be able to fulfill its objectives in a bigger way.
