Introduction to Engineering Design
Similar to problem solving methodology
Define Problem
Synthesize Concept
Evaluate
Sell your work; how is it useful, etc.
Present Solution
Analysis
Use mathematics, science, engineering techniques and economics to quantify the performance of various options
Communication
Writing documents and oral presentations Document all information!
Implementation
Execute the plan; build the design; etc.
Four main steps (5-8) are repeated 3 times (approximately): 1. Feasibility Study Ideas are roughed out 2. Preliminary Design Promising ideas are explored further 3. Detailed Design Highly detailed specifications and drawings are prepared for the best design option
Design-and-Build Project
Goal: Build solar-powered winch-and-cart system capable of transporting an object as rapidly as possible along a 25 meter track. Project ties together several engineering practice concepts illustrating the basics of energy transformation and machine design.
Winch Object
(eagle statuette)
DC motor
Necessary Components
Open-ended problem but it must have:
Solar panel to convert solar energy to electrical energy to power DC motor DC motor to convert electrical energy from solar panel to mechanical work to windup winch Winch to pull cart
Winch is mechanical device that adjusts the tension of rope or wire (pull on rope is windup)
Variants:
Cart doesnt have to have wheels Four wheels vs. six
Track Layout
16-bracket, double elimination Each lane approximately 1 meter wide and 25 meters long Beyond the finish line, a 0.5-meter-long Stopping Zone will be provided

Things to Consider
Placement of Work Light
Determine best location of work light to get the most electrical power from solar panel.
Motor Specifications
Understand how the DC motor transforms electrical power into mechanical power. How do you use this information in the design process?
Force Analysis
How much force is required to pull the cart you design and the object? How much power is required to achieve a desired velocity? What are the loads acting on the winch? Is it going to tip over? Will the winch have enough pulling force?
