SECTION C (1119/2) - SUMMARY EXERCISES for weak classes 1.

Read the text carefully and know exactly what points you are required to include in the summary. 2. Mark out the specified portion of the text. 3. Pick out the required/relevant points. 4. Leave out repetitions, irrelevant references and opinions. 5. Generalise details, examples and explanations include them if the number of words are not enough. 6. Change all direct speech into reported speech. 7. Use your own words as far as possible use plain language. 8. Rearrange points so that it will flow logically from one point to another. 9. Use conjunctions and sentence connectors to direct the flow of the sentences. 10. Write out the summary and check to make sure they are grammatically correct. 11. Count the number of words THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT !!! NEVER CHEAT ON THE NUMBER OF WORDS !!! Any extra words will be cancelled out. If the summary is too long, try to delete words or phrases without losing any main points. If too short, you will be penalized. Include more details to lengthen the summary. EXERCISE A - REPETITIOUS MATERIAL Shorten the sentences, leaving out repetitious materials. 1. He is a very fat man. He is certainly not thin. 2. The boy was very tired. He was too tired to study any more. He decided to go to bed. 3. I was very excited. I could hardly wait for the day to pass. I had never been to the cinema before. 4. The girl was very frightened. She did not know what to do because she was too scared to think properly. 5. There are many things for children to do these days. They can play with toys, computers or video-games. They can read books. 6. Children always love holidays. They enjoy themselves. They have a good time doing whatever they want to do. They are always happy when the holidays are approaching. EXERCISE B DESCRIPTIVE MATERIAL Shorten these passages by leaving out descriptive material. 1. The small boy started to say something in a soft voice. 2. The big female turtle comes to the sandy shore to lay its soft eggs. 3. The chunky, ugly toad has warts on its body. 4. The beautiful, pink flamingo piles mud up high in a flat-topped mound. Then it lays a single egg on the top of the mound. 5. The five-armed starfish which lives at the bottom of the sea can grow a whole new arm if one of its arms is chopped off. 6. Hundreds of small, white baby lambs live with their mothers in large flocks. EXERCISE C LENGTHY EXPRESSIONS Shorten the lengthy expressions in each of these passages. You may have to join the sentences. 1. After a number of years, the boy grows up into a young man. When he is a man, he begins to understand many things. 2. It is hard to think of any other young animal that is as cute and as lovable as a little, yellow duckling. It is lovely to look at and lovely to touch. Its feathers are very soft.
