Carving Courses at Axminster

Our two day carving courses for beginners and intermediates are designed to teach woodcarving using a wide range of traditional and modern tools as well as the use of power carvers. You will learn to sharpen your tools and use them safely and efficiently to create your chosen project. Advice will also be given on tool selection and students are offered a 5% discount on purchases of carving tools during their visit. The cost of the course includes a light lunch on both days and materials used during the course. Kirschen Carving Tools

Kirschen brand tools are made in Germany by the Wilhelm Schmitt Company. They are one of the oldest and most respected manufacturers in the world with production going back as far as 1858. Over many years the company has developed its own special high carbon steel (made to a closely guarded secret recipe). The blades are hardened and tempered over the full length and each blade is fitted with a tough hornbeam handle that is octagonal in shape which is not only comfortable in the hand but also prevents the tool from rolling off the bench. The illustrations of sweeps shown here are on a 1:1 scale and are therefore the impression the tools edge would make if pressed into the page. However, the hand forging process may make for some very slight variations.

Kirschen Carving Tool Set

This handy set of carving tools will appeal to the well organised carver who likes a place for everything and everything in its place. The very elegant wooden box is fitted out with stowage slots for six of Kirschens familiar octagonal handled tools: a straight, a skew, three curved gouges and a Vee tool plus four chip carving knives and a double-sided sharpening stone, enough variety to satisfy most beginner carvers. This would make a very acceptable present for anyone thinking of getting into carving.
Straight Gouge 3 Sweep Kirschen Palm Carving Chisel Tool Set

A handle designed as nature would have intended is how the manufacturer describes these tools and there is no doubt that the pear shaped handles fit easily into the palm of the hand for comfortable and accurate carving. We are not so sure whether nature would have put the flat on the side of the handle but Kirschen can be excused this little deviation in the interests of stopping the tools rolling around the bench. The 6 piece set consists of three straight tools, one Vee and two curved gouges, all made to their usual high standards of design and manufacture. Very useful for general carving or block making.

8 Piece Axminster Detail Carving Tool Kit

An excellent 8 piece set of small carving tools, very nicely made and great value for money. Although mainly intended for filling in detail work on larger carvings, they are equally useful for tackling small size carving projects. There is a useful range of shapes, curved gouges, skew and straight chisels and a V tool, and the edges are very sharp and will stand up well to heavy usage. The low price should make this set very attractive to beginners who might like to have a go at carving but are reluctant to invest too much at the outset. The overall lengths are 150mm, the blade lengths 25mm and the widths across the blades vary from 4 to 8mm.

5 Piece Japanese Woodcarving Set

Kirschen Micro Chisels

The traditional Sheffield list, on which most manufacturers base their production, lists 1/16 or 2mm as the narrowest tools available, leaving the true miniaturist forced to make do with whatever he, or she, can find. Fortunately, Kirschen have come to the rescue with this range of tools which covers seven designs in sizes from 0.5 to 1.5mm. All are fitted with 4 long octagonal hornbeam handles, with a recessed circular grip near the ferrule. The blades are fully polished and lacquered and of the same high quality steel as used on their full sized tools. Overall they give the distinct impression of having been designed by a carver, having bevels ground to the right length and angle requiring only a light hone before use. With Kirschens guarantee of superb quality and their sheer usability, these tools will find a place in practically every carvers tool roll.

Japanese Carvers Stone

A set of two 4000 grit waterstones, firstly a 108 x 63.5 x 16mm block with 5 shallow rounded grooves on one side for sharpening the bevels of a wide range of sweeps of carving tools, the reverse side and edges can obviously be used for flat tools. Japanese Wood Carving Knives

These hand-forged knives are excellent for carving, whittling and a variety of other crafts. The straight edge examples make superb marking or veneer cutting knives. Each blade is laminated using a mild steel backing forge-welded to high carbon Blue Steel, which forms the edge. Tempered to HRC 64-65 this steel takes a fantastic edge and holds it like no other. The handles are beech, shaped for comfort and control. The single bevel knives have one side slightly hollow, similar to the Japanese chisels making sharpening much easier. These files are ideal for carvers, cabinetmakers, toy makers, musical instrument makers and sculptors. With safe edges, theyre useful for fine tuning joints. Rasps produce sawdust, files make filings (dust), an Iwasaki file produces miniature shavings. Like a rasp, an Iwasaki file removes material very quickly but the resulting surface is much smoother, requiring only a little sanding to finish. The secret lies in the shape of the teeth, milling and chemical etching produces a sharp edge with real bite. Diagonal grooves stagger the teeth and the shape of each tooth acts like a mini chip-breaker, minimising clogging. The half-round files have teeth only on the convex side. The tooth pitch of the fine file is 1.6mm and 1.2mm for the extra fine. All our Iwasaki files have beech wood handles fitted, made in Japan. Flexcut SlipStrop
Produced for honing and maintaining the edges on both the inside and outside of gouges and vee tools, the Flexcut SlipStrop consists of a complex moulding with two areas of leather and a bar of a specially developed honing compound. The compound is available separately for those wishing to use it on their existing strop. In use, the particular part of the moulding most suited to the chosen tool is rubbed crayon-like with compound and the tool stropped. A mirror finish is achieved quickly, and the resulting razor edge can be maintained by repeating the process many times before resharpening is required. Use for gouges and vee tools both inside and outside.

KN17 1 Mini Draw Knife. This miniature draw knife is designed for hard-to-reach areas, where a pulling action is more conducive to efficient stock removal. The flexible shank allows the cutting angle to be changed easily for contoured cuts. KN20 Mini Chip Knife. The mini-chip carving knife has a 5/8 ultra thin blade, making unwanted chipping in delicate cuts less likely. Although designed with carvers in mind the benefits of hard leather honing wheels can be used to refine a full range of the sharp edge tools. The Standard kit contains a block of honing compound and one flat faced 90 x 20mm wide leather honing wheel. The Deluxe kit contains a block of compound and two 90mm hard leather honing wheels, one flat faced 20mm wide the other with a narrow 60 vee edge. The wheels are arbor mounted for fitting to a drill, pillar drill etc. Unlike polishing mops and other softer surfaces, which can round over the edge being honed, hard leather wheels are better at holding a straight line and maintaining a precise edge.

Another great innovation from Veritas. The carvers screw is made from solid brass bar. The thread that locates in the workpiece is slightly tapered and deeply cut. Work can be removed and replaced many times without the danger of tearout occuring. The body is hexagonal allowing it to be securely clamped in a vice, or the screw tightened using a spanner. The large moulded knob is fitted with a low friction brass insert. At 125mm long overall it can be used through benches up to 95mm thick via a 13mm hole.

Veritas Bench Stud

The Veritas Bench Stud mounts in a 19mm(3/4) diameter hole. It can lock into material as thin as 16mm(5/8) (depending on the strength of the material) and in blind holes 32mm(1.1/4) deep. Place the wedge in the hole and rotate the toggle bar until the wedges lock in the hole. The 125mm(5) long stud has 1/2-13 UNC threads and provides an overall clamping capacity of 103mm(4.1/8) using the supplied wing nut. N.B. The 1/2-13 thread offers enormous mechanical advantage, and is fully capable of drawing the post out of the dog hole, even if it has been tightly locked in place. Do not over-torque the wing nut.

For anyone who would like to make a start in woodcarving, Henry Taylor, in conjunction with well known craftsman, teacher and author Jeremy Williams, has developed this special Starter Set Pack. The set contains five hand-forged tools (a range of four gouges plus a flat chisel), all sharpened and honed ready for use, and a 12 page leaflet written by Jeremy Williams, with complete instructions and a pattern to enable the beginner to produce an attractive relief carving. The hexagonal beech wood handles prevent the tools from rolling off the bench when not in use. This set contains: 1/4(6mm) flat chisel, 1/4(6mm) shallow gouge, 1/4(6mm) and 5/16(8mm) medium gouges and a 5/16(8mm) steep-cut gouge, blade lengths: 82mm - 90mm. Any good carvers vice should be adjustable in all three dimensions. The Veritas vice has full rotation in two and up to 75mm(3) of height adjustment in the third. An internal arrangement of a spring and an O ring ensures that repositioning the workpiece is a smooth, controlled operation, with no violent swings or movements, allowing precise placement for the next angle of attack. The layout of the base enables the vice to be mounted in a variety of ways, clamped in a vice, permanently fixed to a bench (side or top) or through a 19mm(3/4) dog hole with the optional dog mounting kit. The mounting plate provided with the vice is 90mm(3.1/2) diameter and there is an additional 50mm(2) diameter one also available. As with all Veritas products, form and function are combined to present a very superior tool. High quality materials and excellent workmanship mean this vice is going to serve the carvers needs for many, many years. This is a general purpose carving vice which offers a combination of ruggedness, versatility, ease of use and low cost. The body and base are made from cast iron and the mounting plate and other components are steel. Particular attention has been paid to the rigidity of the mounting plate and its stem which can be a source of flexing on less well made vices. The 125mm diameter mounting plate has 16 holes for the mounting screws, arranged in 3 concentric circles. The combination of heavy duty steel clamping handle, knurling on the shaft and serrations on the clamping faces ensures that nothing will move under onslaught from the mallet. The height excluding the mounting plate is 200mm. Also available as an accessory, is an arbor to accept the three most common thread sizes of woodturning chucks, faceplates etc. This enables woodturners to mount their work in the carvers vice without removing it from their chuck or faceplate.

Arbortech Woodcarver PRO-4

This carving disc fits onto most 100mm or 115mm angle grinders and removes large amounts of wood quickly and effectively when carving or sculpting. The blade has an extremely hard cutting edge with a resilient core which gives it a very low wear rate and the strength to withstand the stresses of high speed operation. Sharpening can be carried out with a 5.5mm chain saw file. The Arbortech PRO-4 Kit comes as a complete package including the Arbortech blade and Pro-Guard, a multi-purpose guard which also acts as a depth stop, safety guard, parallel guide and chip deflector.
This carving and shaping blade will give excellent results when used on a 115mm angle grinder (22mm bore). Being a little heavier than similar products and well balanced with five tungsten carbide cutting tips, the blade is very smooth in use with a controllable cutting action. The blade is 100mm diameter and the cutting tips are 6.8mm wide with a rounded profile. If you need to remove a lot of material quickly when carving or sculpting this blade will take some beating. N.B. It is important that protective equipment and adequate guarding should be used when using this type of blade.

Arbortech PCH100 Power Chisel Kit

Made to fit 4 (100mm) and 4.5 (115mm) angle grinders with a collar size 1.1/2 (38mm): to 1.3/4 (44mm) and a minimum height of 8mm. We recommend using either the Makita 9557 (406754 240v or 610774 110v) or the Bosch GWS850 (611072 240v or 311073 110v). The kit contains: Power Chisel Extension complete with fitting instructions, a 20mm No.7 gouge, a 20mm No.1 flat chisel and a bottle of cam oil.

Ideal for trimming skirting boards when installing laminate floors this is a heavy duty 4mm thick solid steel dished wheel with TCT tips for fast trimming work on melamine, nonferrous metals and wood. 115mm diameter x 4mm thick, cuts up to 25mm deep. Its easily sharpened using a diamond hone.
Arbortech Mini Carver

This smaller version of the Arbortech Pro Blade is much appreciated by professional carvers for its ability to reach into areas where the standard Arbortech will not work, with its 150mm long arm. The Mini Carver comes complete with arm, two blades and mini sanding kit as a package. Suitable for most 100mm grinders (not suitable for Axminster AW115AG), although some Black and Decker and Makita Grinders may require an adaptor kit. This unique tool, made to fit most 100mm or 115mm angle grinders, is precision machined from high quality steel and fitted with three tungsten carbide teeth. The cutting teeth are rotatable and replaceable so theres no need for sharpening. Replacement teeth are available, but with a life of almost 25 times longer than the Pro 4 it may be some time before they are required. Dura-Grit 6 Piece Woodcarving Set

Dura-Grit are powerful, long lasting shaping tools that finish as they cut! This is an excellent selection of six profiles for woodcarving, made with tungsten-carbide grit in sandpaper grades, braze welded to steel. These tools need little cleaning, however, residue can be removed by running the tip into the bristles of a wire/stainless brush or into uncured rubber.Cleaning the burr will restore the cutting surface to virtually new and extend the working life of the tool.
