WAN VIRTUALISATION WITH SIMULATION IN CLOUD COMPUTING

ABSTRACT

Cloud computing is offering utility oriented IT services to users worldwide. It enables hosting of applications from consumer, scientific and business domains. In the modern business world, the bandwidth demands facing IT managers running networks for enterprise-level business continues to grow. With the growing adaption of applications such as video-conferencing and streaming video, allowing end users to have reliable and cost-efficient access to the network is becoming increasingly difficult. For those who can afford it, MPLS is a reliable solution, but one that is not very scalable due to its very high cost. Furthermore, the price per bit of high-end networking technologies such as MPLS and Frame Relay has not seen nearly the same speed of decline as public broadband connectivity. In this occasion, a new technology known as WAN virtualization has emerged. This network virtualization process is based upon adaptive private networking appliances that leverage the cost efficiency and available bandwidth of broadband internet with the reliability of MPLS of Frame Relay. The end result is a simultaneous increase in bandwidth and application performance coupled with a reduction in monthly WAN spend, which is any IT managers dream. This paper illustrates the virtualization process using the WANEM an emulator.

WAN VIRTUALISATION WITH SIMULATION IN CLOUD COMPUTING

Introduction:
Cloud is the set of the connected computers and virtual machines that has a centralized virtual pool for storing all the software. It works on the basis of pay-As-you-use. This is the efficient way in which a software company can ensure the piracy of its products. This technology is growing day by day such that even the operating system which we use is also available in cloud. The bandwidth demand is also growing simultaneously. To share or efficiently utilize the bandwidth a technique called WAN VIRTUALISATION can been introduced. With Adaptive private networking (APN) WAN VIRTUALISATION technology the bandwidth can be increased even 20 to 30 times. This mechanism provides better customer services. This paper describes the some of the prospective in WAN VIRTUALISATION. This also evaluates the
proposed mechanism through implementation of simulation tool.

area network. Apart from increasing the bandwidth, this also provides a lot of benefits. 1. This is cost effective when utilizing technologies such as video conferencing, voice data applications and other multimedia applications. 2. It utilizes unique RAID-like methods and overlay networking techniques in delivering voice over the public Internet. This ensures the effective storage of data. This WAN Virtualization technology allows businesses for the first time to take advantage of the economics of broadband and the public Internet without sacrificing business quality reliability and availability.

Key issues:
Cloud computing is the delivery of computing as a service rather than a product, whereby shared resources, software and information are provided to computers and other devices as a utility (like the electricity grid) over a network (typically the Internet).Though it provides a lot of customer and business service, there exist a key issues in cloud computing. Some of them are, Cost effectiveness-Monthly WAN operating costs are one of the biggest expenses in any IT manager's budget; other than employee costs, it's frequently the single largest item. The maximum IT cost savings can be attained by eliminating expensive private WAN connections altogether and using

WAN VIRTUALISATION: WAN virtualization is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of components that constitute the WAN, such as a hardware platform, operating system, a storage device or network resources. This is basically a model to connect the machines in the wide

multiple Internet connections from at least two different service providers. Increasing bandwidth/sharing bandwidth-bandwidth (it is a bit rate measure of available or consumed data communication resources expressed in bits/second or multiples of it (kilobits/s, megabits/s etc.) need to be utilized in an effective manner. the limited bandwidth may leads to the improper delivery of information. Congestion avoidance- network congestion occurs when a link or node is carrying so much data that its quality of service deteriorates. Typical effects include queuing delay, packet loss or the blocking of new connections. A consequence of these latter two is that incremental increases in offered load lead either only to small increase in network throughput, or to an actual reduction in network throughput. Increase the reliability of service-The key issue in transaction/any service is reliability. The reliable service must be ensured for the customer satisfaction. Apart from these issues, it must ensure the basic need of the cloud computing such as, 1. Privileged user access: The user must be provided specific information on the hiring and oversight of privileged administrators, and the controls over their access. 2. Regulatory compliance. Customers are ultimately responsible for the security and integrity of their own data, even when it is held by a service provider. Traditional service providers are subjected to external audits and security certifications. Cloud computing providers who refuse to undergo this scrutiny are "signaling that customers

can only use them for the most trivial functions," 3. Data segregation, Recovery. Long-term viability

Proposed solutions:
This paper briefly describes the better solution to these issues in more effective manner and working of an emulator for the WAN virtualization. Cost effectiveness: WAN Virtualization is a powerful solution that enables you to reduce monthly WAN costs by 40% to 90% while simultaneously adding network bandwidth and improving both network reliability and application performance predictability. And if that 90% overall figure might usually apply only for certain high-cost international locations, overall savings of 60% to 75% are quite easy to attain. It can eliminate any expensive redundant MPLS or Frame Relay backup connections and/or ISDN connections.

It is comfortable to mix existing private WAN bandwidth together with Internet connections to reduce the amount of private WAN bandwidth purchased at any given location, say reducing a 2 x E1 MPLS connection to a 1 x E1 connection, or reducing the amount of Frame Relay CIR bandwidth or MPLS Quality of service(QoS) bandwidth at a location. Increasing Bandwidth: WAN Virtualization makes it easy to increase bandwidth. IT can easily (and affordably) expand WAN bandwidth by 10 to 20 times. And not just more bandwidth on average

more bandwidth for all of the applications, not just those that are well suited to compression, like bulk file transfers. Adaptive Private Networking (APN) WAN Virtualization technology, can increase usable, reliable bandwidth to private WAN for remote sites by leveraging Internet links that today are only used as VPN backup connections and/or for local Internet access. If there exists redundant private WAN connections between two hosts, APN can use those, too,. Bandwidth optimization can be achieved through proper management of multiple connections to leverage reliability with affordability.

WAN Virtualization technology which uses multiple active, load-sharing connections between locations provides uptime and predictable performance.

Simulation Results:
The study of the emulation is done using WANEM emulator. The flow diagram gives the work of the emulator as,

Congestion Avoidance:
APN allows adding up of seven additional links to WAN. The low cost of broadband Internet links makes it particularly easy to add bandwidth inexpensively at remote sites. Example: one 6 Mbps downstream, 768 Kbps upstream DSL to a 1.5 Mbps T1 MPLS connection and it has increased the corporate WAN bandwidth by 5x at that location. Add three of those 6 Mbps links and it leads to 12x more bandwidth at the site.

The WANEM acts as an intermediate Ethernet between the client and the server. This is depicted as,

Increased Reliability of service:

Just as RAID added significantly to the reliability of storage systems while using inexpensive, "lower quality" hard disks than prior storage systems, WAN Virtualization similarly delivers increased WAN reliability and application performance predictability over single-provider WANs, even as it enables lowers monthly WAN costs and provides greater bandwidth.
