Power management system / generator control interface

1 Purpose
This hardware interface provides communication between MAN SACOS (SAfety and COntrol System) for dual fuel engines and the power management system (PMS) / the generator control (MSB). All these signals are hardwired contacts. Detailed information is given via modbus-signals by SACOS -> IAS.

2 Description
The binary outputs at SACOS are designed as floating contacts (max. 230V AC, 2A). Connected inductivities have to be supplied with a self-induction recuperation diode at the coil. Analogue inputs at SACOS are passive, galvanically non-isolated 4-20mA inputs. Analogue outputs from SACOS are active, galvanically isolated 4-20mA outputs. Used terms in this description: LOP = local operating panel (at the engine, SACOS-scope of supply) ROP = remote operating panel (at the interface cabinet, SACOS-scope of supply)

MSB -> SACOS

Start blocking (NO) This signal blocks the engine start under all circumstances (except for an engine start via the manual activation of the pneumatic start valve at the engine). The signal includes, amongst others, the indication of the closed generator earthing switch. The start blocking does not have to be acknowledged or reset.

Engine start stop at diesel mode by PMS (external control)

ID_ID_Power management_generator control_2.1.doc

PMS -> SACOS

Request start/stop authority by PMS This contact has to be closed if start/stop should be carried out via the PMS. In external control, engine start / stop and setting of engine speed is possible via the PMS.

SACOS -> PMS / MSB

Release start-stop authority external (= remote mode at PMS/MSB) (NO) The operator is to release a control authority changeover to PMS/MSB by turning the switch at the LOP to Remote and by pressing the Command External button at the ROP. The authority can only be given back to SACOS by turning the switch to Local at the LOP and by pressing the Command Panel button at the ROP.

PMS / MSB themselves cannot give authority back to SACOS.

SACOS -> PMS / MSB

Start release (NO) The engine can only be started by PMS/MSB if this contact is closed. If the start sequence is aborted due to a start failure, this contact is opened again. Then start failure has to be fixed and acknowledged via modbus. The reason of the start failure is sent to IAS via modbus and is displayed at the LOP/ROP. If the start sequence is carried out successfully, MSB will get the Release Synchronisation signal and the Start Release signal will be deactivated.

MSB -> SACOS

Engine start request (NO) The engine can only be started in diesel mode. If the Release Start-Stop Authority External and Start Release signals are active and Start Blocking is inactive, the start sequence will run by closing this contact (rising edge is detected). The request is sent either directly from MSB (MSB local mode) or the PMSsignal is looped through by MSB (MSB remote mode).

PMS -> SACOS

Acknowledge start failure Using this impulse input, an engine start failure alarm can be reset in order to allow a new attempt to start the engine.

MSB -> SACOS

Engine stop request (NO) If the Release Start-Stop Authority External signal is active and this input is activated (rising edge is detected), the stop sequence will be started. Therefore, it is necessary to unload the engine and open the generator breaker before this signal is activated. The request is supplied either directly from MSB (MSB local mode) or the PMS-signal is looped through by MSB (MSB remote mode).

Speed control:
MSB -> SACOS
Increase external (NO) The synchronisation / load control device requests an engine speed/load increase by closing this contact. The request is either sent directly from MSB (MSB local mode) or the PMS signal is looped through by MSB (MSB remote mode). It is 1.5 rpm/sec (value to be adjusted during commissioning).

Decrease external (NO) The synchronisation / load control device requests an engine speed / load decrease by closing the contact. The request is either sent directly from MSB (MSB-local mode) or the PMS signal is looped through by MSB (MSB-remote mode). It is 1.5 rpm/sec (value to be adjusted during commissioning). Actual active generator power (4..20mA) SACOS needs this signal for speed control in diesel mode and especially in gas mode.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Generator control:
SACOS -> MSB
Release synchronisation (= ready to synchronise) (NO) This contact is closed if the engine speed exceeds 90% of the nominal speed and the Generator Breaker Closed contact is open. Engine standstill (NO) Engine speed < 20 rpm

MSB -> SACOS

Generator breaker closed (NO) This signal is used for parameter set changeovers of the speed governor. It is time-relevant and should be sent without any delay.

SACOS -> PMS / generator control

Open generator breaker The contact is designed both as a make and break element. It is activated during a normal stop sequence (not auto shutdown) as soon as the power output is less than 5% of the engine power rating. If it is activated, the generator breaker must be opened in order to permit an engine stop. The contact remains active until the engine speed decreases 80% of the nominal speed or the stop request is set back by a renewed start signal.

This signal is only active if any prealarms occur, which could be followed by a load reduction request or auto shutdown; e.g. engine lube oil pressure low, main bearing temperature high.... PMS should stop the engine and start another one. Load reduction request (NO) For some engine conditions (e.g. exhaust gas temperature high,), SACOS requests a load reduction to 60% of nominal load (-> refer to modbus list and list of measuring and control devices for detailed information). This load reduction is not done by SACOS itself.

SACOS -> PMS / MSB

Auto shutdown (NO) While an engine shutdown (auto shutdown, emergency stop) is activated by SACOS, this contact is closed. An immediate opening of the generator breaker is required. This information is also important for electrical propulsion drives because of the sudden power drop.

PMS -> SACOS

Auto shutdown from PMS (NO) NO-Contact at PMS has to be supplied with a parallel 24kOhm-resistor.

MSB -> SACOS

Auto shutdown from MSB (NO) NO-Contact at MSB has to be supplied with a parallel 24kOhm-resistor.

Fuel management : Change-over from diesel to gas mode

SACOS -> PMS
Engine running in diesel mode (NO) Gas mode released (NO) This contact is closed if no gas blockings are active (engine load > 12%, gas temperature and pressure at GVU are in special range,) -> refer to list of measuring and control devices or to modbus list.

ID_ID_Power management_generator control_2.1.doc

PMS -> SACOS

Request gas mode (NO) A closing of this contact will initiate the gas start procedure (block-and-bleed test, pilot combustion check,). If this start procedure was successful and if there did not occur any switchover-alarms, the engine will run in gas mode. Otherwise, the Gas Mode Released contact will open and the engine will switch back to diesel mode.

Fuel at diesel mode

PMS -> SACOS
HFO selected for diesel mode This signal could also be supplied by the control of the fuel booster module. The contact should be closed if the engine runs on HFO. The contact should be opened if the engine runs on MDO. Viscosity (4..20mA)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Standby
PMS -> SACOS
Request for standby (NO) This signal has to be activated as long as standby is requested.

SACOS -> PMS

Standby active (NO) The signal is activated following a Request for Standby, provided that the following conditions are met: 1. Engine at standstill 2. The last engine stop / standby was carried out no more than 60 min ago 3. Prelubrication pressure > 0.3 bar (prelube pump is requested by SACOS) 4. HTCW temperature > 60 (80 for applications wit h HT/LT) 5. Engine lube oil temperature > 40 . If the signal is activated, the engine is available immediately after start request (no prelubrication or slow-turn is required prior to engine start). If one of the conditions 3-5 is not met for more than 60 minutes, standby mode is terminated automatically by SACOS. The maximum standby time is limited to 7 days. After that the engine has to be taken out of standby mode. Please note that this period is not monitored by SACOS. Instead, standby mode has to be terminated by PMS via de-activation of the signal Request for Standby.

When standby mode has been terminated by SACOS, the signal Standby active is deactivated and it is not possible to set the engine back to standby right away. It must run once (reaching n>200 rpm) before it can be switched back into standby mode. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blackout
PMS -> SACOS
Blackout (NO) In case of a blackout, this contact has to be closed. Upon activation of this signal, engine control (buffered by the UPS) will start a timer of 60 minutes. During these 60 minutes the engine can be started locally at the LOP, at the ROP or by the PMS closing the Engine Start Request contact (in case the PMS has the control authority). As long as this Blackout contact is closed, the engine lubrication pressure is not monitored and the engine is allowed to start without prelubrication pressure. Only some start blockings (blocking from MSB, auto shutdown active, emergency stop active, turning gear engaged) are still valid. This is only allowed if the engine has been in standby or running before the blackout occurred. After 60 minutes (or if the UPS fails before 60 minutes) the engine will only start after one minute of prelubrication and after the engine has been turned successfully (by slow-turn or, in case of slow-turn failure, manually) (-> normal start procedure).
