A Message from Co-Chairman (Industry)

Innovation is todays mantra for success. In a world where start-ups are making rapid strides within a short period of time and big names of yesteryears are falling by the way side, the one approach that separates the winners from the losers is the ability to constantly recreate products, processes and services. Harvey Firestone has rightly said that Capital isn't so important in business. Experience isn't so important. You can get both these things. What is important is ideas. If you have ideas, you have the main asset you need, and there isn't any limit to what you can do with your business and your life." Ideas that revolutionize the way we think or act, or usher in a change that contributes to the betterment of society by fulfilling the needs and aspirations of those at the bottom of the pyramid, or are environmentfriendly are creating waves across the world. It is interesting to note that innovative and creative ideas are coming from the youth. Spontaneity and fresh thinking coupled with real time access to information and knowledge has ensured that young people across different cultures, economic strata and professions have been able to contribute significantly to the innovation revolution sweeping across the globe. Young Indians with their vast talent are playing a major part in the innovation revolution and in the process are getting upwardly mobile. I send my best wishes to the GTU Innovation Council and congratulate you on your efforts to encourage young students from different disciplines to unleash their creative energies and share their ideas for the betterment of our country.

Abstract:
Electronics Sequential Gas Conversion System is a one year interdisciplinary project involving following two disciplines: Electronics & Communication Engineering. Computer Science & Engineering. Apart from above two disciplines, Mechanical as well as Automobile concepts are also involved. Starting with the main concept, our main motive is to introduce an innovative and cheap Gas conversion system for cars. Now in this conversion system an electronic circuitry called ECU (Engine/Electronic Control Unit) will be developed by our project partners from Electronics & Communication Engineering. This ECU has to be reprogrammed, but before that the vehicle has to be tested under various conditions. Thus the software to be developed plays its part over here. With the help of the software the vehicle will be tested. In order to overcome all the above mentioned problems an electronic kit is to be developed by our project partners of E&C dept. This kit will control the gas flow; hence the average will be increased as there will be less consumption of gas compared to above mentioned legacy systems. Moreover the switching of petrol to gas and vice versa depending upon the speed, acceleration, load and other environmental conditions will be possible through this kit. This kit will be programmed and attached with the original ECU of the car. It will be capable to handle and manipulate the engine depending on the driving conditions. But every car differs according to design, as well as location also matters for functioning of each car. Thus in order to decide all those parameters the software will be used to analyze and reprogram the ECU.

In recent years, the interest on research in library management system has grown notoriously. Many authors have made individual proposals of interesting topics to be researched around library management systems, but no overarching research agenda has yet been proposed. Based upon a recent research literature review that we have undertaken, which includes several real case studies conducted in order to learn from library management system experience within specific colleges & schools, we propose and detail what appears to be a natural library management system life-cycle. Although a more focused cycle has been mentioned for library management system implementation, we propose and define in detail a library management system life-cycle which covers other phase preceding and following implementation. Defined cycle may help in future propose of research agendas around library management system, as well as in the contextualization of more specific research themes.

A brief report on Project Work

Our institute was established in 2009. The first admitted batch students are right now in Semester-VI. These students will have to choose IDP after completion of this current semester. However, institute constantly encourages faculty members and students to carry out innovative projects / experimentation. It gives me pleasure to brief about following projects carried out by faculty members and students.

Development of Reynold's Apparatus

Prof. Pradipsingh Rana, Prof. Nalin Jaiswal & Prof. Rinkesh Prajapati, faculties of Mechanical department have developed an experimental setup of Reynold's Apparatus. Reynolds's Number is a dimension less number used by engineers to determine type of Fluid Flow and Testing on scale down models of airplanes, ships etc.

Objectives of experimental setup: To determine the Reynolds number &hence the type of flow either laminar or turbulent. To determine upper & lower critical Reynolds numbers and velocities.

The experimental setup consists of an acrylic tube with one end having bell mouth entrance connected to the water tank. Valve is connected to the tube in which the dye is injected at the mouth from the dye bottle. By varying the discharge, dye in the form of Thread is observed for the stream lined flow and a wavy form of dye thread is observed in the transient stage from stream lined to turbulent flow and finally the dye is observed in the diffused form when turbulent flow occurs as the discharge is increased.

Design of Autonomous Robot with multiple frequencies:

Sheth Bhagyesh, Patel Harsh and Patel Parind, students of CE & IT Department have designed Autonomous Robot with multiple frequencies (27 MHz, 40MHz & 49MHz) working on the principle of ELECTRONIC ACCELERATOR. Main Features: The 27 MHz & 49 MHz frequency are used to control the robot movements. The 40 MHz frequency is used to operate an ELECTRONIC ACCELERATOR. Whenever the track will be narrow, the robot will move slowly with less rpm of DC motor and if the track will be wider, the robot will move faster with more rpm of DC motor.

The design of above robot was awarded for Best Designing of NFS ACCELERO SESSION-2 at FOOTPRINTS sponsored by ABB at M.S. University, Vadodara.

Innovative project work by SVIT students : Microcontroller based solar tracking and grid automation Guided by: Asst. Prof. P. R. Gandhi Name of Students: Parth Jani Dhara Shah ABSTRACT
The electricity scenario in rural India is still alarming even after 63 years of Indian independence. As per the statistics as of now more than 1 lakh villages are still deprived of basic electricity needs. And due to the staggering requirements of industrial and commercial sector the supply to present rural connections is also below standard. The availability, quality and the time schedule are the major issues when it comes to rural electrification. During our statistical research for this project we found out three main reasons for the dismal performance of our supply system. Less generation compared to the demand. Transmission capital cost and losses. Depleting fossil fuel reserves. The main idea behind undertaking this project was to overcome the two main problems of present electrical grid in India.

Part 1:
The first part of the project deals with utilizing the available SOLAR POWER in the rural plains to generate electricity using photovoltaic cells as a standalone unit. This solar trapping will be done using a multi axis, stepper motor driven, solar tracker. The solar tracker will be controlled using MICROCONTROLLER 8052. The multi axis mode is the most efficient way of trapping solar energy round the year, as it tracks the daily as well as annual motion of the sun. The dual axis mechanism is carried out using LDR pair comparison circuitry. The trapped energy will be stored in batteries for its functioning tin the stage 2 of the project. This unit will provide a self- sufficient electrical supply unit that can power the average needs of the village household. This can be implemented where there is no electrical supply available at all.

Part 2:
The main part of this project is the grid automation. This phase of the project is designed to be implemented in all those rural areas where there is grid supply available but not up to the mark. The microcontroller used for the solar tracker unit is used here for the function of grid automation encouraging SMART GRID concept. The grid automation will do intelligent switching between the available grid supply and the solar energy stored in the batteries. The switching action will take place under three conditions. Normal condition supply from grid is given to load. In case of power outage the battery will supply the trapped solar power to the load. If there is no load requirement the stored energy will be transferred to the grid and net metering will be implemented.

ELECTRICAL LOAD FORECASTING USING ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK Project by: Guided by:
Abhishek Desai Nikhil Menon Ravi Unadkat Prof. P. R Gandhi

ABSTRACT:
Accurate load forecasting is very essential in power system planning. This will increase the efficiency of electricity generation and distribution while maintaining sufficient security of operations. Short term load forecasting, which focuses on short period of time, is important for several operational decisions such as economic scheduling of generating capacity, scheduling of fuel purchases, security assessment and planning for transmission. Because power generation relies heavily on the electricity demand, the consumers are also, practically speaking, required to wisely manage their loads to consolidate the power utilitys optimal power generation efforts. Thus, accurate and reliable electric load forecasting systems are absolutely required. To date, there are numerous forecasting methods developed primarily for electric load forecasting. Some of these forecasting techniques are conventional and often less favoured. To get a broad picture of the problem at hand, a literature survey was first conducted to identify possible drawbacks of the existing forecasting techniques including the conventional one. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) approach for short-term load forecasting (STLF) has been recently proposed by a majority of researchers.

Our project is concerned with:

Studying the conventional methods such as time series method and artificial neural network and proving why artificial neural network is more accurate than other methods. We have concentrated on studying not only ANN model in detail but also 3 conventional methods which include Multiple Regression, Exponential Smoothing and ARMA model. On understanding how these methods work we will compare the graphs obtained from conventional models with the graphs obtained from ANN model. This comparison is done with the help of programs that we have developed in Matlab software using the concepts of these models in mind. Our aim is to prove that ANN model is better and more accurate than other conventional models.

The next milestones of the Sankul:

a. Establish a detailed research methodology for UG students and make changes based on

industry feedbacks, if necessary. b. Make summer trainings more approachable and if possible mandatory. Documenting the on-field experiences is a habit that could benefit in industrial life. c. Continue to host and conduct various training activities to promote creativity and innovation. d. Propose an inclusion of recognition of individual (student and faculty) contribution towards Innovation Sankul. e. Exploring the scope of linkages of various projects/innovations within same branch which can lead to a better or new product/process innovation.
