Creating a

dent in the universe.

Introducing NUS Solutions, an avenue to effect meaningful change in the community by utilizing the collective talents of NUS Students.
Executive Summary
NUS Solutions is a student initiated project that aims to help Non-Prot Organizations solve their problems and bring learn life relevance and impact into students learning in NUS. At the same time, it aims to help develop analytical and problem solving skills amongst students interested in the consulting for organizations. This will be done by recruiting a group of student to identify and analyze the causes of problems that specic non-prots. Next, solutions to these problems will be brainstormed and discussed with the respective non-prots. Once a satisfactory solution is obtained, a course that requires students to build a similar solutions as a project for assessment purposes will be identied. Subsequently, the project that best meets the non-prots requirements will be handed over to the non-prot. For example, if it is found that an NGO does not have enough manpower to sustain its programs, we might conclude that the NGO does not have sufcient publicity. Hence, a recommendation might be to create an effective platform for online marketing. This could then be opened up to Communications and New Media students, who can use their skills to create a website. This will create a truly win-win situation for all as students can build their portfolio/resume while nonprots can gain invaluable resources to help them in their work.

Our Vision

To bring drive, excitement and positivity to the academic aspects of student life in NUS in a manner that is benecial to the society. This will be done through: 1. Creating a sustainable system that connects students with partners that can allow them to develop their skills in a mutually benecial manner. 2. Ensuring that a platform to exchange, develop and implement ideas is created. 3. Harnessing the collective creativity and intellect of students in NUS to solve problems.

"If you dont like something, change it. If you think you cant change it, change the way you think about it." -Bruce Barton

Our Motivation
The Need

Everyday, we see many students in NUS come to school without looking forward to it. We see people get excited over arranging their timetables such that they only have to come to school 3 or 4 days in a week, and we see people complaining about what they feel are unproductive hours spent in the classroom. This needs to change - and we want to do all we can to change it. We b e l i e ve t h a t c o m i n g t o university should be an exciting experience, and an event that people look forward to. We believe that the things that we learn in the classroom can be immensely important, and that once students see the real life relevance and impact of what they are doing, they will be deeply engaged with their coursework.
Expected Outcomes

c) Connecting team members with social workers, social entrepreneurs and management consultants in Singapore d) Ensuring a sustainable impact of recommendations on the NGO

Our Process
Pre-Pilot Project Building partnerships: We hope to build a strong partnership with professors in NUS in order to get their advice on how to successfully link our vision with the operating realities of the universities. Capacity Building: We also seek to develop our problem solving skills and knowledge of the constraints faced by a non-profit. We will seek advice from management consultants and social workers to help us with this. Pilot Project (elaborated on the next page) Post-Pilot Project We will analyze the results from the pilot project and seek advice from NUS representatives about how to integrate the project into mainstream academics.

Phased development
Pilot Project

We recognize that what we seek to achieve would require much thought and testing before it can be adopted on a large scale. As such, we intend to roll out a pilot project that ensures that we know the operational and human problems that this project would entail and gives us ample time to x them.
Process

We intend to roll out the pilot project in a organized, systematic manner in order to get to know our constraints, strengths and weaknesses better. A summary of our process can be found in the blue sidebar on this page.

a) Stimulating greater motivation and drive among NUS Students about their coursework. b) Fostering know-how amongst members of NUS Solutions about creating social change and about analyzing operations of organizations

Timeline
1. Finalize details about the operations aspects of the project by January 2. Seek advice from professors in NUS about the feasibility of the project by mid-February 3. Network with social entrepreneurs and management consultants to gain know-how about analyzing organizational problems by mid-March 4. Create website and Social Networking arms to publicize the project by end-March 5. Approach non-profits about involvement in project by late June 6. Kickstart pilot project by early August

The Pilot Project Week 1 (DEFINE) Interview people in the NGO and dene their main problems Week 2 (ANALYZE) Analyze the problems and recommend solutions to NGO; tweak recommendations according to their feedback

Week 3 (IMPLEMENT) Determine specic guidelines for the recommendations, and open them up to students for implementation

Week 4 (REVIEW) Review the entire process (Week 1-3) and determine how it could have been improved.

Pilot Project: Operational Details

We seek to use the Dene, Analyze, Implement and Review framework to organize our efforts. The details of these processes are shown in the diagram above. The Implement step would require the support of NUS professors who are willing to slightly modify the specications of the project components of the modules that they are teaching in order to help meet the NGOs requirements. Great care will be taken to ensure that the professors do not have to modify the requirements dramatically. Only a marginal change in the assessment specication will be required.
