FREE E-WASTE RECYCLING EVENT On February 29th from 9 am to 2 pm MCAS Miramar EMS will be conducting an event where anyone can bring E-Waste to be recycled. The items that can be turned in include T.V.'s, computers, monitors, VCR's, batteries, CD and DVD players, fax/copy/printing machines, cables and cords, chargers, and cell phones. These are all items that are prohibited from being thrown away inside of trash cans/dumpsters. This is geared more towards these items in housing and the barracks to give us and our families a convenient place to dispose of old electronics in a proper manner Who: Miramar EMS, What: Electronic Waste Recycling event, When: 29 Feb, 9 am - 2 pm, Where: MCAS Miramar, Building 6687, Why: To properly and legally dispose of unwanted Electronic Waste. So RDS decided to offer another one Mar 6th & 8th to accommodate those who could not get in the first time around. Come join Readiness & Deployment Support for one of our most popular classes, Fight Like A Girl on Tues, Mar 6th and Thurs, Mar 8th from 1830-2030 at the Youth Center Bldg 2700. It is being offered in a two day format with each day requiring 2 hours of class time. MALS-11, EMARINE COMMUNICATION TOOL (SEE FLYER ON PG 10) EMARINE is here at MALS-11. EMarine is our official organizational communication tool. It was developed to deliver readiness information to Marines and those who support them. This includes other service-members, civilian Marines, Family Members, and friends. Per MarAdmin 499/11, eMarine is being implemented throughout the entire Marine Corps, providing a consistent and familiar tool for you to use as you move from one unit to another. eMarine can be customized for your information needs and preferences. Please see flyer on pg 10 for Registration Procedures. WHO WANTS TO RUN THE BOSTON MARATHON? What: Entry to Boston Marathon (no qualifying time necessary). Who: Ten Service members who have deployed for OIF/OEF and have an interest in running a marathon. When: Apr 16, 2012. Where: Boston, MA. Why: Veteran's Heroes Program, in conjunction with the marathon, is offering spots to military runners interested in completing the Boston Marathon. How: Interested candidates should complete A Sports Application (Request Application from your FRO) and turn it in with command endorsement to Semper Fit Ath Dpt by 20 Feb 2012. Include your expected finish time on the application. Note: Sponsorship has been obtained for this event and will be utilized for payment of round-trip airfare for all ten athletes from Southern Cal to Boston. Athletes will be responsible for payment of their entry fees ($150) and food, transportation, and lodging. The intention at LES, is to provide an opportunity to Marine Corps and Navy spouses to gain skills to better support your unit and the Marine Corps community. The Leadership Education Seminar (LES) is a three-day seminar that teaches Communication, Values, Group Dynamics, Conflict Management, Etiquette, Protocol, Crisis and Trauma, Handling the Media, Volunteer Retention, and Transition and Turnover for spouses that are active in unit and base activities. The Commanding Officer has the opportunity to nominate two spouses that would benefit from this seminar. 2012 AYMCA ESSAY CONTEST The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) is hosting an essay contest for grades 1-12. Children of all Active Duty or retired (with 20+ years of service) military personnel from Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force, Coast Guard and National Guard/Reserve families in first through twelfth grade are eligible to enter. Prizes are savings bonds. The program is needing new volunteers for the second half of the school year. The program will run every Friday from 0750 until 0910. The requirements/events are as followed: Uniform of the day is utility uniform, PT with the fifth graders at 0800, play games with them, There is also the Mentorship portion where the Marines and kids from K-5 get time to know each other and make a difference on the kids life. HIKING AND BIKING TRAILS IN BALBOA PARK Open to the public year round. Balboa Park offers 65 miles of trails of various difficulty, scenery, and length. Some are dirt trails through remote areas of the park while others go past museums and performing arts venues. To guide visitors along each of the trails, a satellite image-based map has been merged with a series of GPS-documented routes, a significant advancement in park signage designed to highlight topography, incorporating park landmarks to help guide the user and gauge the level of difficulty of the trails. The routes are clearly marked with color coded, numbered signs, which inform users of the distance, degree of difficulty and change of route direction.
