ISSUE 17 February 2012 It's Friday! A week from today we are hosting our 48hr mobile app hackathon along with 5 other cities (Dallas, San Francisco, London, Paris and Berlin). 48hrs to pitch your idea, join a team, prototype an app across any platform you want, utilizing any language you wish! All leading up to presentations, prizes given by us and our sponsors, 1 team receiving the title of "Best Local App - NYC" and 72hrs later that same team possibly gaining the title of "Best Global App". The possibility of worldwide recognition and media coverage in 72hrs - worth attending? I sure think so! I don't have an app idea but hopefully there's a team I can join. Well, I'm looking forward to drinking loads of coffee and looking like a zombie at the end of the weekend - NOT! I am however looking forward to working with those attending and seeing all the great things you create. Look forward to seeing some friendly faces and meeting new ones. Have a wonderful weekend.

Cheers, Luisa Luisa@techmeetups.com New York Silicon Alley @techmeetupsNYSA

GigaOm + PaidContent = Perfect Sense February 14, 2012 When the U.K.-based Guardian Media Group bought PaidContent in 2008, it was portrayed as an attempt to expand into the U.S. market. The Guardian newspaper was a forerunner in its use of the web, and already got a large portion of its traffic from North America. Keeping New York City a Competitive Tourist Destination February 13, 2012 I read with pleasure yesterday that the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of our citys cultural treasures, will be getting a spectacular new plaza design. When completed, the landscaping will run all the way from 80th to 84th Streets on Fifth Avenue and will include more trees, NY Tech Day to Cement Citys Tradition of Massive Tech Events February 13, 2012 We New Yorkers like our tech expos like we like our pizza: big and cheesy. So, what is NY Tech Day? Its a science fair for startups, and an event to celebrate New Yorks awesome startup ecosystem, but more concretely, its going to be a gigantic one-day expo at the block-sized Lexington Ave. Armory, with 200 startup booths, more sponsor and vendor booths, and a few thousand attendees rotating through, and followed by an awards show.
