RRSTRAND Art Nouveau Porcelain from Sweden Press Release Light of the North Art Nouveau Porcelain from Rrstrand The appearance of the Rrstrand porcelain factory from Sweden at the 1900 Paris World Exposition was brilliant: the world had never seen such an expert handling of porcelain mass some in the modelling of ultra-thin petals and an underglaze colour palette of such fine nuances. The critics were full of praise and economic success soon followed. The reason for this lay in the cooperation between Rrstrand and the painter Alf Wallander, who from 1894/1895 had worked for the manufacture. By 1896 Rrstrand had his first big success with the porcelain designed by Wallander at exhibitions in Stockholm, Malm and Gteborg. Siegfried Bing had also incorporated Rrstrand pieces into his Galerie LArt Nouveau in Paris. His artistic rise finally began in 1897 with the Art and Industry Exposition in Stockholm and found its crowning moment in Paris in 1900, the International Exhibition of Modern Art in Turin in 1902 and the World Exhibition in St. Louis in 1904. Rrstrand could now compete on an international level alongside the two significant Danish manufacturers Kniglich Kopenhagen and Bing & Grndahl. Almost overnight, the business had moved into the forefront of European porcelain manufacturers with international standing. Wallander and his artist colleagues Per Algot Eriksson, Nils Lundstrm as well as Karl and Waldemar Lindstrm combined the underglaze painting cultivated in Copenhagen with a sculptural modelling. The reliefs of the famous Rrstrand vases, bound to a naturalistic Jugendstil style, were all carried out by hand and are unique pieces. Soon enough the critics were referring to the parallels that revealed themselves in the choice of motifs, in the colouring and in the handling of light found in the contemporary Swedish and Nordic atmospheric painting and spoke of a kind of light of the North in the porcelain. With Rrstrand Art Nouveau from Sweden ARNOLDSCHE Art Publishers presents the first German-language publication of the famous Swedish porcelain manufacture. Based on the exceptional collection of Hans Schmidt, the art and history of the porcelain are presented both in texts by the Art Nouveau expert Bengt Nystrm and in large-format illustrations. Finest underglaze painting and delicate, free-formed naturalistic relief and breakthrough decoration helped establish Rrstrand porcelain factory in to world renown at the turn of the century. RRSTRAND Art Nouveau Porcelain from Sweden History, Note on the Author, Contents

The History of the Porcelain Manufacturer The manufacturer Rrstrand was founded in 1726 as a faience factory under the name Porcellainsvrket. For over 120 years fine earthenware was created; later majolica, biscuit and Parian were added from around 1895 also the porcelain production with which Rrstrand attained international renown. The golden age of the manufacturer lasted barely one and a half decades (ca. 1895 to 1910). In 1926 after a period of inactivity at the factory in Schloss Rrstrand in Stockholm, the factory was relocated first to Gteborg and then from the mid-1930s to Lidkping. The year 2005 saw the end of the porcelain manufactures history with the closure of the business.
