March 2006 Abstract ‘Three coatings have been obtained using nanostructured, bimodal and conventional WC-Co cermet powders by means of High Velocity Oxygen-Fuel (HVOF) technique. Propylene has been used as fuel gas. All the powders have been sprayed under the same spraying parameters. ‘These powders and the coatings oblained have been characterized using XRD and SEM. ‘The ietion wear resistance of the coatings has been studied by Bal-on-Disk test (ASTM 99-90), and the abrasive wear resistance has been ‘quantified by Rubber-Wheel test (ASTM G6S.91). Finally the corrosion resistance has been studied by electrochemical techniques and salt fo spay test, ‘The nanostructured coating shows more hardness than the other ones, but the bimodal coating have showed better abrasive and fiction wear resistance. Both nanostructured and bimodal coatings have showed good corrosion resistance, better than the conventional coating of WC-Co. The bimodal powder has the advantage of being less expensive than the nanostructured powder, and even providing better properties. (© 2006 Elsevier B.V. Previous works have shown that a finer WC crystal structure results in higher hardness and increased wear properties [I-4.26-28]. However, there are some difficulties in the obtention of enhanced abrasive ‘wear properties in these thermal sprayed coatings as carbide sizes decreases, due to the extensive decarburization experi- enced by nanostructured WC-Co powder during spraying, diminishing the abrasive wear resistance [1.4]. Bimodal powders have been produced to minimize this effect, keeping * Comesponding author Tel/ax: +34 934021297. Email adresses: ep-emens@ub edu (LM, Guilemany),ep-emen acd (6. Dosa, cp-memub.eda (R. As the nanoscale component is the minor constituent (~30%) not only the decarburization could be reduced, but also the total cost In the present study, a comparison between the properties and microstructures of three coatings obtained through nanostructured, bimodal and conventional agglomerated feed- stock powders have been done, and promising results have been obtained in the corrosion tests. 2 Experimental procedure Three different commercially available powders were used as feedstock in the present study. These powders were nanostructured WC-12Co Infralloy $7412, bimodal WC-12Co Nanomyte MI and conventional WC-12Co Amperit 518. All the powders were agglomerated into sprayable sizes. They were 1M Gulley eta sprayed on two types of steel substrates (UNS G41350): flat substrates (100*20*Smm) and cylindrical substrates (@=25.4mm
