3. Guide Name: Prof. A. Brahmapurkar. 4. Problem Statement: To manufacture a PLC operated Car washing prototype which enables to completely wash a car in less than 2 minutes. Explanation: Car washing is carried out in India at various service stations and maintenance workshops. Conventional Car washing technique requires a lot of manpower and time to wash one car. This not only increases the price tag per wash but also engages manpower where their skill and expertise would have been utilised in some other area. Automation of the car washing process will not only decrease the time required for car washing but will also provide better manpower utilisation. This is done by the use of a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) which instructs the various motors to pump water or soap water solution as per programmed by the PLC. The PLC is also able to manipulate the time required e delay of the motor. Using this concept the time required per wash is drastically reduced. The concept also saves a water and energy. It will be simple to operate and therefore will not require any major skill. This will also eliminate the need for manpower. The PLC is programmable as the name suggests and

therefore any future modifications to the inputs will be possible. The prototype design will be smaller in size also. 5. Introduction: The sole reason for this project to be automated is due to the use of a PLC. The PLC is explained as follows: A PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) is an industrial computer used to monitor inputs, and depending upon their state make decisions based on its program or logic, to control (turn on/off) its outputs to automate a machine or a process. It is defined as A digitally operating electronic apparatus which uses a programmable memory for the internal storage of instructions by implementing specific functions such as logic sequencing, timing, counting, and arithmetic to control, through digital or analog input/output modules, various types of machines or processes. Industrial control system or ICS comprise of different types of control systems that are currently in operation in various industries. These control systems include PLC, SCADA and DCS and various others. They are based on the Boolean logic operations whereas some models use timers and some have continuous control. These devices are computer based and are used to control various process and equipment within a facility. PLCs control the components in the DCS and SCADA systems but they are primary components in smaller control configurations. 6. Relevance of the topic: As explained beforehand in the problem statement the major obstacle encountered in the conventional Car washing machines at various maintenance service stations are the loss of manpower and time for a simple task. This thereby reduces the productivity of the station. Therefore the most efficient and cost effective method will be the application of an electronic device viz. Programmable Logic Controller. Since this is a programmed device the timings for each wash can be pre fed into the controller. The sequence of the wash can be as follows: 1.) Pre wash 2.) Soap Solution wash

3.) Brushing 4.) Post wash 5.) Drying 7. Significance: The improvement in the conventional design will improve the following factors: 1.) Time Reduction 2.) Manpower freedom 3.) Water Wastage is reduced 4.) Flexibility of programming 8. Facilities Required: 1.) Software Workshop (For the Programming of PLC) 2.) Workshop Department (For the various Pipes and fittings) 3.) Hardware Workshop (For assembly of PLC and fitting) 9. References: 1.) Programmable Logic Controllers & Industrial Automation an Introduction by Madhuchhanda Mitra. 2.)
