Smartphone (With Touchscreen Capability) Usage in Goa Institute of Management & Elsewhere A COMPARATIVE STUDY

SUMMARY
With the advent of 3G phones, preferable with bigger screens, the demand for smart phones has increased many folds. We believe that the students at GIM are more tech savvy and use smart phones more as compared to students from other institutes in India. Sanquelim, being a small town, has a locational disadvantage of physical connectivity. Thus Smart phones seem to be a good option for staying connected to the outside world. A majority of the students come from different cities and towns outside Goa, and thus are not so familiar with the Goa terrain. Smart phones come with dedicated GPS navigation devices which help in locating where one is at that moment. It also answers questions related to location of a particular destination and the various routes to it. Being an MBA student in a B-school, we are supposed to check our mailboxes frequently. Through the smart phones we can check them at almost any time, thus our dependability on laptops and personal computers is reduced. To compare the penetration of smart phones amongst the students of GIM with the students elsewhere in India, we took a sample of 87 GIM students out of which 41 students are using smart phones. Another sample of 75 students from other institutes was taken, out of which 38 students are using smart phones.

INTRODUCTION
Smartphones combine the qualities of that of a PDA and a normal mobile phone. In addition they also serve as portable media players and camera

phones with high resolution touchscreens, web browsers through which people can either GPS/navigate or browse the internet. The term smartphone is usually associated with advanced amount of processing capability and connectivity than a contemporary mobile phone. By conducting a survey among the youth of Sanquelim (students of GIM) we intend to judge utility of smartphones and how they cater to the consumer in the remotest location of the world.

OBJECTIVES
By tracking the smartphone (with touch screen capability) we intend to judge if the students in GIM are more connected to the outside world to their compatriots in other b-schools or colleges.

HYPOTHESIS
STEP 1 1. H0 (Null Hypothesis): Proportion for people using smartphones (with touchscreen capability) from GIM(ps1) <= Proportion for people using smartphones in other B-schools(ps2) . 2. H1 (Alternate Hypothesis): Proportion for people using smartphones (with touchscreen capability) from GIM(ps1) > Proportion for people using smartphones in other B-schools(ps2). STEP 2 We shall assume the level of significance as 0.1 i.e. result accuracy of 90%. STEP 3
Methodology

Here, we are considering two proportion means ps1, ps2 which depict the percentage of smartphones (with touchscreen capability) usage within GIM and outside GIM respectively This case requires collection of proportional data of the number of smartphone (with touchscreen capability) users inside and outside GIM. We prepared a questionnaire which was circulated inside Goa Institute of Management for the sample calculation of first proportion while outside GIM in other colleges such as IMT, HMRITM, SRIT, GGITS, IIMC, IIMR, EMRC, IIT, JEC, UBS. The below given table reflect the overall data collected.

STEP 5 Formula: The analysis of variance between the companies is formulated using the data gathered. The proportion mean values are compared with a level of significance of .10 for accurate results. Thus the results can be predicted with 90% accuracy. The formulas used during the process of analysis are Pooled estimate of overall population (
) X + X2 p = =1 n1 + n 2

DATA ANALYSIS:

For the sake of simplicity and actual calculation of our test statistic we keep the value as zero. Assuming

p1 p2 )

= 0 and using the formula specified above we have

Z = -0.449496834 Z > -Z (-1.28) therefore we shall accept the hypothesis i.e. that the smartphone penetration of students within the population of entire GIM is more than people in the other b-schools.

CONCLUSION:
From the data analysis we can safely conclude that GIM students are more aligned to the usage of smartphones.
